Funny, Gritty and Thought Provoking - LIBERTY CITY

Liberty City
February 18 - March 1
Carnival Studio Theater

Laugh-out-loud funny, yet as gritty and thought provoking as the neighborhood that inspired it, Liberty City is a "definitive example of the solo show" - Village Voice.

April Yvette Thompson knows Miami's Liberty City. It's where urban and island cultures rub up against each other, and it's where she grew up with her Bahamian/Cuban father and African-American mother. Now she brings to life that neighborhood as it was during her childhood - the turbulent 1970s and '80s, a time when hope and the possibility of change gave way to disillusionment and disintegration, and families struggled to stay together as their worlds were coming apart.

April tells us her life story with "scorching insight on how history both frees and chains us at the same time." - Variety.

* Define your life arena
* Identify the true vision for your goals
* Connect with your innate motivation
* Design milestones around key steps
* Ensure success through fun

In addition to working on your goals during the session, you will leave with tools and worksheets to create ongoing goals.

Did You Know? In 1979 a Harvard study asked the MBA graduates how many had clear, written goals. 3% had written goals and plans, 13% had goals but not in writing and 84% had no specific goals at all. Ten years later the 13% with goals were earning twice as much as the 84% who had no goals. The 3% with written goals were earning ten times as much as the other 97% combined.

An artist with an illustrious trajectory in Brazil, Rome, the Dominican Republic, and Cuba, he opened at Cremata Fine Art with an extraordinary new visual language. Francisco Sánchez produced a series of canvases and painted chalkboards of serene and exotic beauty, establishing a dialogue with classical antiquity and how nature and magic erupt into the man-made. MANDY PATINKIN: Dress Casual
With Paul Ford on Piano
Saturday, March 21 @ 8 PM
Knight Concert Hall

"A musical force of nature!"
"Mandy Patinkin is in the business of show stopping!" - The New Yorker

To some, he's the Tony Award-winning revolutionary from Evita who grew into a bonafide Broadway star in Sunday in the Park with George. To others, he's the Emmy Award-winning Dr. Jeffrey Geiger in "Chicago Hope," or the star of "Criminal Minds." To some, he's Madonna's piano man in Dick Tracy or Streisand's leading man in Yentl. And to others he will always be the swashbuckling swordsman in The Princess Bride.

But whichever role you know him for, Mandy Patinkin's favorite is reaching out to live audiences with the power and the passion of popular song. From Rodgers to Sondheim, Chapin and back to Berlin and Porter, Mandy Patinkin takes you on a musical journey you'll never forget.

Presented by the Adrienne Arsht Center and American Express.

A Reading Room for Shedding Light: Pamela Vander Zwan

If you're coming to A Reading Room for Shedding Light tonight

If you're thinking of coming by tonight:
The reception will start at 6pm, and the artist's talk starts at 7pm.

A Reading Room for Shedding Light: Pamela Vander Zwan
January 29 – March 29, 2009
Main Library, 2nd floor exhibition space
101 W. Flagler St, Miami - http://www.facebook.com/l.php?u=http://305.375.2665
Reception and Artist Talk: Thursday, January 29, 6 – 8:30pm

In her work, Pamela Vander Zwan looks at how our collective histories have shaped our society with a focus on the social and political landscape of our time. A Reading Room is a site-specific work adapted for Main Library. In it, Vander Zwan creates a reading room environment that pairs Braille and visual text with photographs of blindfolded people in situations that demand the use of sight or adaptation to a lack of sight. The reading room also includes Braille versions of pivotal documents and books in U.S. history. By putting the viewer into a situation in which sight does not automatically equal awareness, she asks vital questions about participation in democratic society.

Instructor: Alexis Caputo

Mining Your Life for Fiction

Eight Mondays, February 2 – March 23, 6:30-8:30 p.m.

Instructor: Norma Watkins

Instructor: Claudia Forestieri

Big Poems, Little Books: The Ins & Outs of Chapbooks

Eight Wednesdays, February 4 – March 25, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.

This workshop introduces writers to contemporary poetry through the framework of chapbooks, mini-collections of poems valued for their tight focus on subject, detail, and voice. Writing Your Novel the TV Way

Eight Saturdays, February 7 - March 28, 12:30-2:30 p.m.

The next time you’re wondering how you’ll ever get through the writing of a novel, think about TV producers and writers of original series and even non-fiction shows. They pretty much have to see the whole thing in their heads, and process it all into a readable “series bible” before they can get a green light. Learn to think like the TV executive who sees it, feels it and believes in it–and get your novel written!

Instructor: Anjanette Delgado

A note form the universe

TUT... A Note from the Universe

Did you know that whenever you feel love, you literally begin to glow? You probably did.

But did you know that the glowing is actually made up of zillions of minute sparkles? And that these sparkles receive as much energy as they create? And that because of this energy exchange you completely stop aging and look younger? Abundance is immediately drawn to you? Healing powers fill you? Muscles are strengthened, pounds are shed, and your vision improves? Lingering questions are answered? New friends are summoned? Old friends are poked? Problems are solved? And maple syrup tastes more maple-y?

All when you feel love.

Author: Azar Nafisi, author of the beloved international bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran

Azar Nafisi
Friday, January 30, 2009 at 7:30 p.m.
University of Miami Gusman Hall, 1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables, FL 33146

Azar Nafisi, author of the beloved international bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran, now gives us a stunning personal story of growing up in Iran, memories of her life lived in thrall to a powerful and complex mother, against the background of a country’s political revolution. Reaching back in time to reflect on other generations in the Nafisi family, Things I’ve Been Silent About (Random House, $27) is also a powerful historical portrait of a family that spans many periods of change leading up to the Islamic Revolution of 1978-79, which turned Nafisi’s beloved Iran into a religious dictatorship. Writing of her mother’s historic term in Parliament, even while her father, once mayor of Tehran, was in jail, Nafisi explores the remarkable “coffee hours” her mother presided over, where at first women came together to gossip, to tell fortunes, and to give silent acknowledgment of things never spoken about, and which then evolved into gatherings where men and women would meet to openly discuss the unfolding revolution. This unforgettable portrait of a woman, a family, and a troubled homeland is a stunning book that readers will embrace, a new triumph from an author who is a modern master of the memoir.

FREE TICKETS are required for this event and are available at all Books & Books locations.

Presented in collaboration with Books & Books, the University of Miami, and the Women’s Chamber of Commerce.

Few American rituals are as loved and watched as the Super Bowl. So while you're getting ready to grab ice-cold beers, hot wings, and watch the guys on the field bash their helmets together and get ass-slap happy, Yelp's scoring a touchdown with the coolest team of sports bars in town to go forth and down some beers at!

With a name like Tom's NFL, it's hard not to imagine this place getting out of hand on Sunday. Just make sure to stay on your A game at Miami Springs' version of Cheers, advises Yendi V, 'cause if you get out of line you'll have to tell your friends you got beat up by the "rugby-playin' bartenders," and those girls are tough.

If you're in the Grove, you might want to tackle Mr. Moe's, where you can catch plenty of the Steelers vs. Cardinals action, then ride out the adrenaline high by jumpin' on the mechanical bull. Marcos R is waiting for "the stuffed animals to start singing and swaying their heads," but our money says pay attention to that half-time show. Not too far away is Flanigan's, and Paul W'll tell you that "if you're looking for a very casual, laid back place to have a drink, some wings or ribs and want to watch the game in a place with lots of repeat regulars, this is definitely it!"

Miami's got some rookies on the all-star sports bar roster as well. Miami Prime Grill scores high with Martin O; our guess is it has something to do with having over 25 plasma televisions and a plethora of frosty draft beers! Meanwhile, LA transplant 8 oz is planning on a major blitz by adding some much needed gourmet, organic flare to the usual pub grub.

Or you could go all the way with Ted's Hideaway. Best known for its late night insanity, don't let that stop you from hootin' and hollerin' along with Sabrina C and the rest of the crowd during the big game. This being Miami, we had to give you some waterfront action, and the MVB is Shuckers. Peter M's a fan of cheap beer, the nice dock, and of course plenty of TVs! And after all that, you can continue the festivities like a true athletic supporter at Norman's American Bar and Grill, complete with a 10-foot, giant HDTV... and last call at five in the morning. We guarantee anyone still standing will be doing their own personalized Super Bowl shuffle by then!

“Top Chef” Cooking Party

Quickfire challenge: Create a delicious amuse bouche with seasonal ingredients — using only a spork.

You have ten minutes. Go!

No matter the challenge, the food on Top Chef always looks tastier than Tom. Judge for yourself at Chef’s Night on February 21.

Local toque Jeff McInnis is bringing four of his fellow cheftestants home for a one-night-only food fest in the penthouse of the Pelican Hotel. (Ocean-view terrace? Check.)

Sample Jeff’s lamb merguez sausage with spicy harissa, Jamie “It’s Not Top Scallop” Lauren’s gazpacho, and Melissa Harrison’s lobster and pork belly shumai. Surely things will heat up when lovebirds Hosea Rosenberg and Leah Cohen get cooking. Put out the fire with ample booze from the open bar.

Tickets (a mere 175 of them) are on sale now.

Better pack your knives and go.

The Argentine (Part One) 7pm nightly

PART ONE: 2hrs 17min.
On November 26, 1956, Fidel Castro sails to Cuba with eighty rebels. One of those rebels is Ernesto “Che” Guevara, an Argentine doctor who shares a common goal with Fidel Castro - to overthrow the corrupt dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista. Che proves indispensable as a fighter, and quickly grasps the art of guerrilla warfare. As he throws himself into the struggle, Che is embraced by his comrades and the Cuban people. This film tracks Che's rise in the Cuban Revolution, from doctor to commander to revolutionary hero.

Guerilla (Part Two) 9:30pm nightly

PART TWO: 2hrs 10min.
After the Cuban Revolution, Che is at the height of his fame and power. Then he disappears, re-emerging incognito in Bolivia, where he organizes a small group of Cuban comrades and Bolivian recruits to start the great Latin American Revolution. The story of the Bolivian campaign is a tale of tenacity, sacrifice, idealism, and of guerrilla warfare that ultimately fails, bringing Che to his death. Through this story, we come to understand how Che remains a symbol of idealism and heroism that lives in the hearts of people around the world.

For theater director Caden Cotard (Philip Seymour Hoffman), life catering to suburban blue-

hairs at the local regional theater in Schenectady, New York is looking bleak. His wife

(Catherine Keener) has left him to pursue her painting in Berlin. His therapist (Hope Davis) is better at plugging her best-seller than she is at counseling him. A new relationship with the alluringly candid Hazel (Samantha Morton) has prematurely run aground. And a mysterious condition is systematically shutting down each of his autonomic functions, one by one. Worried about the transience of his life, he leaves his home behind. He gathers an ensemble cast into a warehouse in New York City, hoping to create a work of brutal honesty.

"To say that Charlie Kaufman's 'Synecdoche, New York' is one of the best films of the year or even one closest to my heart is such a pathetic response to its soaring ambition that I might as well pack it in right now."-- Manohla Dargis, The New York Times

FEB 08 SUN 8pm:

The debut of:

“PLEASURES & LOVES Via Max OPHÜLS”

Ah. . .Paris in the 1950s. Or any decade for that matter. There is no city more romantic. And capturing pleasures and loves in Paris is what no director did better in the 1950's as Max Ophüls, not a Frenchman at all, but born in Saarbrücken, Germany. His most famous “mature period” work after a decade in Hollywood, with its lyrical, magical display of sweeping black and white and finally color tracking shot cinematography, and stunning monumental production design, which seems to caress the characters that inhabit within, is best displayed in the trio of films at MBC this month: the beautifully restored versions of La Ronde, Le Plaisir, and Lola Montès. He was an icon of romance with a twist, and his films are now finally “mounted on canvas” properly again, in newly restored versions, half a century after his untimely death in 1957.

“Everyone in the world has two fatherlands: his own and Paris”- Max Ophüls

La Ronde (Roundabout)

(France/1950)

“A Wonderful Merry-Go-Round of Love With Eleven Stars”

With Simone Signoret, Anton Walbrook, Serge Regianni, Simone Simon,

Daniel Gélin, Danielle Darrieux, Jean-Louis Barrault, Gérard Phillippe

Literally speaking, La Ronde is a ride in an amusement park. Colloquially, it can also apply to a dance, where the couples, well, they spin around. Ophüls' film is based on a play of the same name, which was about class and the spreading of syphilis through a series of “rencontres sexuelles”. Ophüls drops the disease, and most of the class issues in his interpretation of the work. Instead he opts to examine the intricacies, and the false-shallowness of relationships. In his world, even what may seem to be the most meaningless sexual encounter leaves a mark on those involved, and in a sense everyone else they touch. –Cinematical
