Ah, the almighty taco. Few mortals can deny the allure of a piping hot tortilla filled with mixed Mexi-goodness. Be it flour or corn, meaty or veggie, cheesy or sour creamy, the taco may very well be one of the greatest inventions of our time. The light bulb? Whatever. The wheel? Puhhlease. This week, get wrapped up as we taco 'bout some of the tastiest tacos Miami has to offer.

Although best known for its Cuban roots, the east side of Little Havana harbors some of the most popular taquerías in the city. To keep her palate pleased and wallet full, Ivonne Marie C rediscovers Taquería El Mexicano, a "little place with big flavor." Likewise, Mi Rinconcito "has all the hallmarks of good eating: fresh, great quality, and cheap," if you ask Jeff G. For Kelly O, Orale's mouthwatering carnitas and pastores make for "the best tacos in Miami," while Stephanie W insists size matters when feeding extra grande cravings with a "weekly schlep to Ver Daddy's for the totally ginormous Macho Taco."

If the suburbs are more your scene, find "taco heaven" with Laily B at Don Burrito, where "generously-filled tacos will give you the fix you were desperately aching for," especially since "the owners are from Mexico and they're doing their best to keep things true to the original." Equally genuine is nearby Ernesto's where you can tackle tantalizing tacos de lengua, carne asada, y al pastor. To stay friendly to your finances, try their Three Amigos Special: any 3 tacos for $6.50 served with guacamole and pico de gallo. Javier A's response? "Absolutely incredible!"

Jewel M's reigning favorites at Burritos are – despite the name – "the tacos, served true Yucatecan style on a flat circular soft corn tortilla with the fillings piled on top." Another yummy Yucatecan option is Bruce W's pick, Cheen Huaye – "spicy, sassy, and looks damn fine in a skirt (steak)." His amor is for the Tacos de Cheen Huaye: "three little flat steaks on the tortillas with onion, some peppers and plantain... yes, plantain. That's Yuca style!" Of course no hot taco roundup could be complete without gettin' a little freaky for fish. Gina H was Southern California dreaming after a feast on fried mahi-mahi tacos at Surf Road, resulting in a return visit the following day. In fact, she believes they might just "put crack in their cilantro lime sour cream sauce." Well amigos, it just doesn't get more special and secret than that.

What is a Girl Geek Happy Hour? WITI South Florida, decided to start a monthly Girl(Women and WITI Men)Geek happy hour just for fun. It is an excellent opportunity for like-minded professionals to get together and discuss in an informal environment about the latest technology and science trends. Drinking, cat eye glasses and throwing around css terms are not required, but are appreciated. How do I know if I qualify to be a girl geek? Don’t worry about qualifying yourself. If you think you’re a girl geek, you probably are. Come on down and see for yourself. The whole point is to meet new people. What’s the point, really? Look, we’re girls. We’re social. We can like motherboards and MAC. We need to remind each other that we’re out there, mentor each other and encourage girls to fly their geek flag proudly. Oh Yeah – Like all WITI events, guy's can come too! The Small Print: This is a “just for fun” event so that we can get to know one another in a fun non stressful way. Food and drinks are on your own!

Joint Venture
Burger & Beer Joint Opens

The hustle and bustle of South Beach makes you so tense. Might we suggest a joint to help you relax?

The Burger & Beer Joint opens today on the corner opposite Casale Pizzeria.

The space is divided into three parts. The restaurant serves gourmet burgers like the Hotel California (beef, fried egg, avocado, salsa, cheddar) and Fly Like an Eagle (turkey, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy). Or design your own: Choose a meat, size (half, three-quarters, or one pounder), and toppings. There’s also an old-school soda fountain for floats or boozy milk shakes and 99 different beers.

Down the hall is the sports bar: flat-screens, a free pool, and a full menu till 5 a.m. Upstairs, the shadowy lounge — open Thursday through Saturday — looks like a Victorian saloon (gilded mirrors, crystal chandeliers, baroque chaises).

Perfect for living the high life.|

48-Hour Film Project Comes to Miami
We're all in search of similar things: the meaning of life, our other half, cheap flights... and of course, a trusted hair stylist (slash miracle worker). Yelp knows that finding a spot to get your 'do did can be hairy business. We've known the terrors of the over-processed tresses, the crooked bang trim and the badly-executed bobs. For the sake of your locks, we've compiled some of Miami's best salons, so you won't have to rock a fedora to cover up a nasty cut.

Want "to redeem your hair from status quo to cool?" For a change from the "same old same old to a (French or Italian) Vogue-worthy" look, Ginger H puts her trust in Todd Jameson at Nue. Adriana D knows "there is nothing as simple as a good haircut to boost confidence," which is why she heads to Andy's for million-dollar feel, thanks to "the amazing shampoo experience, attention to detail with coloring, and wizardry with the scissors." Meanwhile, it's the talented stylists, rockin' music, complimentary espressos, and juicy mags that keep Elizabeth V coming back and referring friends to Contesta.

For "knockout highlights on a budget," Annie C calls on color guru Janeth Ocampo, of Janeth's Grotto. For a fantastically "drastic makeover," Lourdes W put her locks in the hands of Van Michael's Sunday team of New Talent stylists. But imagine, if you can, a killer haircut for a mere $12. Judy N's "faith in the students" at the Aveda Institute paid off with some seriously sexy snipping. Skeptical? You could always splurge on the $18 Master Student cut. Shear genius!

How about dem fellas? John W searched far and wide for a barbershop and found his match in 1940s throwback Razzle Dazzle in Coral Gables. "No matter who you are, you are treated like a king for the half-hour to hour you spend in the chair. The cuts are great and the shaves are wonderfully refreshing." Greg A prefers his shave and a style with a side of luxury: At Miles and Lyle, "the waiting room is equipped with a leather couch, satellite TV, an internet workstation, a coffeemaker, and male-oriented mags. Haircuts are done in private rooms with nice, soft leather barber chairs with built-in massagers, and every stylist always takes their time to make sure the job is done right." Remember folks, you're only as good as your last haircut.

Did your favorite salon get cut from our collection? Tell us on Talk!

(A documentary film by Robert Kenner/USA/2009/94 min.)

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

Those Three

(An seh)

(Directed by Naghi Nemati/Iran/2007)

With Youssef Yazdani, Dariush Ghazbani, Esmail Movahedi

Just one day from completing their military training, three conscripts desert their camp and escape into the frozen wilderness of Northern Iran. Travel through this mountainous, snowbound region is dangerous, but "those three" opt for the independence it promises and must now forge their way through an uncertain landscape, with only friendship to see them through. In this austere and mesmerizing debut feature, director Naghi Nemati's attention to the minutiae of human relationships is a quiet and deliberate meditation on the value of responsibility, connection and sacrifice.

In Farsi and Turkish with English subtitles.

“Naghi Nemati's assured, poetic debut proves that the Iranian talent factory is still up and running.” –Screen Daily

The Spirit of the Beehive

(El espíritu de la colmena)

(Directed by Victor Erice/Spain/1973/99 mins.)

With Ana Torrent, Isabel Tellería, Fernando Fernán Gómez

The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena) is widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s. In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country’s devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the memory of it. Produced as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.

In Spanish with English subtitles.

WINNER: Grand Prize San Sebastian Film Festival

“Released in 1973, in the dying days of General Franco’s forty-year dictatorship, The Spirit of the Beehive soon established itself as the consummate masterpiece of Spanish cinema.”-Paul Julian Smith

(Directed by Yojiro Takita/Japan/2009/130min.)

With Masahiro Motoki, Riyoko Hirosue, Tsutomu Yamakazi

Academy Award® winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Departures is a delightful journey into the heartland of Japan as well an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan's cultural heritage. Departures follows Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), a devoted cellist in an orchestra who is suddenly left without a job. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a person who prepares deceased bodies for burial. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living. In Japanese with English subtitles

In The Loop

(Directed by Armando Iannucci/UK/2009)

With James Gangolfini, Mimi Kennedy, Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander

In The Loop is a smart comedy and Sundance Film Festival hit from the acclaimed team who created the award-winning BBC TV comedy series Alan Partridge and The Thick of It. The film is drawing instant comparisons to some of the great political and absurdist comedies such as Doctor Strangelove, Wag The Dog, Thank You For Smoking, and Monty Python. With razor-sharp, truly laugh-out-loud dialogue the film pokes fun at the absurdity and ineptitude of our highest leaders. With everyone looking out for number one, and the fate of the free world at stake (but apparently incidental), the hilarious ensemble cast of characters bumbles its way through Machiavellian political dealings, across continents, and toward comic resolutions that are unforeseeable.

OFFICIAL SELECTIUON: Sundance, Tribeca, and Los Angeles Film Festivals

“SCATHINGLY FUNNY...a smart sophisticated comedy.”-Manohla Dargis, NY Times

“DON'T MISS IT...the sheer volume of eloquent vulgarity and biting dialogue is indeed timeless; there are so many great lines that rush by you that you need at least two viewings to catch them all.”- David Fear, Time Out New York

Those Three

FOOD, Inc.

The film will be introduced and followed by a Q&A on Friday

with an expert TBA.

High and Low

(Tengoku to jigoku)

(Directed by Akira Kurosawa/Japan/1963/143 mins.)

With Toshiro Mifune, Kyoko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi

Proving that he can produce contemporary drama as effectively as period pieces, Akira Kurosawa directs legendary actor Toshiro Mifune in the unforgettable role as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper in the highly influential High and Low. The epic saga is a compelling race-against-time thriller and a penetrating portrait of contemporary Japanese society.

In Japanese with English subtitles.

WINNER: Best Film and Best Screenplay Mainichi Film Concours

“High and Low represents quite a different project: a contemporary rather than a period film. . .It is the only time Kurosawa ever worked explicitly with material of American origin, and he used it not to illuminate a vanished epoch but to produce a map of contemporary Japan that ranges from the complacent and affluent “heaven” to the needy and nihilistic “hell” of the film’s Japanese title.”-Geoffrey O’Brien

Adoration

(Directed by Atom Egoyan /Canada/2008/100 mins.)

With Arsineé Khanjian, Scott Speedman, Rachel Blanchard, Devon Bostick

Adoration, celebrated Canadian-Armenian director Atom Eyogan’s twelfth feature film, speaks to our connections—with each other, with our family history, with technology and with the modern world. Sabine (Arsinee Khanjian), a high school French teacher, gives her class a translation exercise based on a real news story about a terrorist who plants a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend. The assignment has a profound effect on one student, Simon (Devon Bostick). Simon re-imagines that the news item is his own family's story, with the terrorist standing in for his father. . .The film is woven with the common threads that appear in much of Egoyan’s work: the differences between appearance and reality, the subjective nature of truth, and the dynamics of family.

Save the Arts! Take Action Now!‏

We need your help! In 22 days, the New World Symphony, and many other cultural organizations, could lose funding that enables us to provide free programs for school children, and free tickets for seniors and local businesses with tourist and local traffic integral to their own economic success.

On September 3, the Miami-Dade County Commission has a difficult choice to make: they will attempt to balance their operating budget in the face of a shortfall in property tax revenue. In doing so, they may cut funding for the arts, and the New World Symphony could lose $430,000, not just for one year, but for years and years to come. Funding from the County enables us to provide 23 free performances and presentations each season, and helps fund numerous free programs, including our Kids in the Concert Hall, for Miami-Dade school children at the Lincoln Theatre. Without this funding, these programs will be eliminated!

An investment in the arts is one of the best investments any grant-giving entity can make. Year after year, national and regional studies have demonstrated a solid financial return on such investments. This is due to the fact that the arts are vital to the success of local businesses (Click here to read about the impact of the arts in Miami-Dade County).

Some important points to consider:
· The arts generate nearly $1 billion in local economic impact annually ($922 million / year)
· Miami-Dade based, nonprofit cultural organizations employ 22,895 full-time workers and generate $648.7 million in annual household income to local residents
· Arts organizations annually spend $420 million and arts audiences spend $401.9 million locally, pumping vital revenue into local restaurants, hotels, retail stores, parking garages and other businesses

All we ask of you is to let your commissioner know how you feel. Write them, e-mail them, call them, and tell them that you enjoy living in a vibrant cultural community, and that our economy benefits from it. We have included contact information for you own commissioners below. Please help us now.

Sincerely,
Howard Herring
President and Chief Executive Officer

SAVE THE DATE! The County Commission will finalize the FY2009-2010 budget at the two public hearings both scheduled to begin at 5:01 pm in the County Commission Chamber (111 NW 1st Street, 2nd Floor) on: Thursday, September 3, 2009 and Thursday, September 17, 2009. Please join the South Florida Arts Community at these meetings!

WHAT YOU CAN DO:
Forward the letter below, inserting your own information or personal accounts, to your commissioner, as soon as possible.
Call your commissioner's office, and let them know how you feel about the vote.
Forward this e-mail to friends and family who share your passion for the cultural arts.

Sample Letter

Dear Commissioner (Insert Last Name Here)

(Potential first sentence for the letter sent to the Commissioner for the district in which you live/vote:) I am writing to you, my elected representative to the County Commission, to let you know of my deep and abiding concern as a resident and voter regarding the County's FY2009/10 budget.

(Potential first sentence for letters sent to all other County Commissioners:) There are critical issues affecting the County's arts and cultural support for which we need your help.

The Mayor's proposed budget cut to the Department of Cultural Affairs is intolerable.

While we understand the need to prune the County's operational budget to fill the large budget gap, we ask that you seriously look at the entire budget and ask yourself how shortsighted it would be to lose important support of the cultural community. Consider the millions of dollars the arts generate each year which would be lost in these reductions. The County's economic impact of the arts study, released last year by the Department of Cultural Affairs, demonstrates that every $1 dollar of County arts funding invested leverages $27 of other private and public funds. This return on investment is remarkable evidence of the effective and worthwhile use of public funds. While $3.5 million is comparatively little in the context of the County's target for overall budget reduction, it is an enormous portion of the County's investment in its cultural life. Cutting these funds will have devastating, ripple effects across the various other funding sources that the County's support helps to generate.

Annually, Miami-Dade's arts industry generates nearly $1 billion in local economic impact, employs roughly 23,000 people full-time, and, in addition, receives the contributed skills and time of 19,000 arts volunteers. Thousands of jobs will be lost if these cuts are kept in place.

County government's leadership and investment in the arts and culture has contributed directly to our community beginning to realize its goal of becoming one of the world's most exciting cultural destinations. The proposed draconian cuts to the Department of Cultural Affairs will disrupt the cultural growth of our community and will cripple our efforts to attain our ambitions to attract business, tourism and citizens who are proud to call Miami-Dade County a true leader in arts and culture.

Thank you for your past support and for recognizing the value, importance and far-reaching benefits of building a great cultural life for our community. I strongly urge you to vote to continue current support for the arts and the budget of the Department of Cultural Affairs.

Sincerely,
Your Name
