Those Three

(An seh)

(Directed by Naghi Nemati/Iran/2007)

With Youssef Yazdani, Dariush Ghazbani, Esmail Movahedi

Just one day from completing their military training, three conscripts desert their camp and escape into the frozen wilderness of Northern Iran. Travel through this mountainous, snowbound region is dangerous, but "those three" opt for the independence it promises and must now forge their way through an uncertain landscape, with only friendship to see them through. In this austere and mesmerizing debut feature, director Naghi Nemati's attention to the minutiae of human relationships is a quiet and deliberate meditation on the value of responsibility, connection and sacrifice.

In Farsi and Turkish with English subtitles.

“Naghi Nemati's assured, poetic debut proves that the Iranian talent factory is still up and running.” –Screen Daily

The Spirit of the Beehive

(El espíritu de la colmena)

(Directed by Victor Erice/Spain/1973/99 mins.)

With Ana Torrent, Isabel Tellería, Fernando Fernán Gómez

The Spirit of the Beehive (El espíritu de la colmena) is widely regarded as the greatest Spanish film of the 1970s. In a small Castilian village in 1940, in the wake of the country’s devastating civil war, six-year-old Ana attends a traveling movie show of Frankenstein and becomes possessed by the memory of it. Produced as Franco’s long regime was nearing its end, The Spirit of the Beehive is a bewitching portrait of a child’s haunted inner life and one of the most visually arresting movies ever made.

In Spanish with English subtitles.

WINNER: Grand Prize San Sebastian Film Festival

“Released in 1973, in the dying days of General Franco’s forty-year dictatorship, The Spirit of the Beehive soon established itself as the consummate masterpiece of Spanish cinema.”-Paul Julian Smith

(Directed by Yojiro Takita/Japan/2009/130min.)

With Masahiro Motoki, Riyoko Hirosue, Tsutomu Yamakazi

Academy Award® winner for Best Foreign Language Film, Departures is a delightful journey into the heartland of Japan as well an astonishingly beautiful look at a sacred part of Japan's cultural heritage. Departures follows Daigo Kobayashi (Masahiro Motoki), a devoted cellist in an orchestra who is suddenly left without a job. He answers a classified ad entitled “Departures” only to discover that the job is actually for a "Nokanshi" or "encoffineer," a person who prepares deceased bodies for burial. The film follows his profound and sometimes comical journey with death as he uncovers the wonder, joy and meaning of life and living. In Japanese with English subtitles

In The Loop

(Directed by Armando Iannucci/UK/2009)

With James Gangolfini, Mimi Kennedy, Peter Capaldi, Tom Hollander

In The Loop is a smart comedy and Sundance Film Festival hit from the acclaimed team who created the award-winning BBC TV comedy series Alan Partridge and The Thick of It. The film is drawing instant comparisons to some of the great political and absurdist comedies such as Doctor Strangelove, Wag The Dog, Thank You For Smoking, and Monty Python. With razor-sharp, truly laugh-out-loud dialogue the film pokes fun at the absurdity and ineptitude of our highest leaders. With everyone looking out for number one, and the fate of the free world at stake (but apparently incidental), the hilarious ensemble cast of characters bumbles its way through Machiavellian political dealings, across continents, and toward comic resolutions that are unforeseeable.

OFFICIAL SELECTIUON: Sundance, Tribeca, and Los Angeles Film Festivals

“SCATHINGLY FUNNY...a smart sophisticated comedy.”-Manohla Dargis, NY Times

“DON'T MISS IT...the sheer volume of eloquent vulgarity and biting dialogue is indeed timeless; there are so many great lines that rush by you that you need at least two viewings to catch them all.”- David Fear, Time Out New York

“Cinema GREEN”

A NEW environmental film series in collaboration with: ECOMB

The Environmental Coalition of Miami & the Beaches

FOOD, Inc.

(A documentary film by Robert Kenner/USA/2009/94 min.)

In Food, Inc., filmmaker Robert Kenner lifts the veil on our nation's food industry, exposing the highly mechanized underbelly that has been hidden from the American consumer with the consent of our government's regulatory agencies, USDA and FDA. Our nation's food supply is now controlled by a handful of corporations that often put profit ahead of consumer health, the livelihood of the American farmer, the safety of workers and our own environment. We have bigger-breasted chickens, the perfect pork chop, herbicide-resistant soybean seeds, even tomatoes that won't go bad, but we also have new strains of E. coli—the harmful bacteria that causes illness for an estimated 73,000 Americans annually. We are riddled with widespread obesity, particularly among children, and an epidemic level of diabetes among adults.

The film will be introduced and followed by a Q&A on Friday

with an expert TBA.

Each weekend, Raúl Peralta and his friends – a devoted group of dancers – gather in a small bar and act out their favorite scenes from Saturday Night Fever. Raúl longs to become a showbiz superstar, and when the national television announces a Tony Manero impersonating contest it seems like he may finally have a shot at living his dreams (or does he?). . .-All Movie Guide

High and Low

(Tengoku to jigoku)

(Directed by Akira Kurosawa/Japan/1963/143 mins.)

With Toshiro Mifune, Kyoko Kagawa, Tatsuya Mihashi

Proving that he can produce contemporary drama as effectively as period pieces, Akira Kurosawa directs legendary actor Toshiro Mifune in the unforgettable role as Kingo Gondo, a wealthy industrialist whose family becomes the target of a cold-blooded kidnapper in the highly influential High and Low. The epic saga is a compelling race-against-time thriller and a penetrating portrait of contemporary Japanese society.

In Japanese with English subtitles.

WINNER: Best Film and Best Screenplay Mainichi Film Concours

“High and Low represents quite a different project: a contemporary rather than a period film. . .It is the only time Kurosawa ever worked explicitly with material of American origin, and he used it not to illuminate a vanished epoch but to produce a map of contemporary Japan that ranges from the complacent and affluent “heaven” to the needy and nihilistic “hell” of the film’s Japanese title.”-Geoffrey O’Brien

Adoration

(Directed by Atom Egoyan /Canada/2008/100 mins.)

With Arsineé Khanjian, Scott Speedman, Rachel Blanchard, Devon Bostick

Adoration, celebrated Canadian-Armenian director Atom Eyogan’s twelfth feature film, speaks to our connections—with each other, with our family history, with technology and with the modern world. Sabine (Arsinee Khanjian), a high school French teacher, gives her class a translation exercise based on a real news story about a terrorist who plants a bomb in the airline luggage of his pregnant girlfriend. The assignment has a profound effect on one student, Simon (Devon Bostick). Simon re-imagines that the news item is his own family's story, with the terrorist standing in for his father. . .The film is woven with the common threads that appear in much of Egoyan’s work: the differences between appearance and reality, the subjective nature of truth, and the dynamics of family.

In English and French with English subtitles.

WINNER: Cannes Film Festival Ecumenical Jury Prize

“A PROFOUND and PROVOCATIVE exploration of cultural inheritance”

-Stephen Holden, New York Times

"FASCINATING ... ENGROSSING ...full of elegantly fractured chronology and provocative ideas." -Variety

–Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle

“AN ICICLE SHARP PORTRAIT. The film manages a career spanning panache.”
