FINAL CALL: WCSF 'Stocks for the Shorter Run' -- Faculty Conference Call with Prof. Stambaugh‏

Stocks for the Shorter Run? Faculty Conference Call with Finance Prof. Stambaugh
Friday, May 29, 2009

Stocks for the long run?

Are we sure about that?

Despite a recent uptick, stock market investors have suffered deep losses in the past 18 months--and are even now still back at late 1997 levels!--challenging the belief
that stocks are the best long-term investments. Indeed, Wharton Finance and Economics Professor Robert Stambaugh recently coauthored a paper entitled, Are Stocks Really Less Volatile in the Long Run?, which suggests that equities are subject to bigger price swings than previously understood.

The research adds a new perspective to the work of Wharton finance professor Jeremy J. Siegel, author of the book, Stocks for the Long Run, which says stock returns more than offset risks if you stay with the market through its ups and downs.

Join the Wharton Club of South Florida and the Wharton Club of Northern California for a conference call with Professor Stambaugh on Friday May 29th at 3pm EST as he explains why stocks may be more volatile over the long run than we have previously been led to believe. While two hundred years of stock market data have produced a trend line that has led investors to expect 10% average annual returns on stocks, Professor Stambaugh will explain why expecting this trend to continue may be a faulty premise on which to base your long-term investment decisions . . . as well as your retirement hopes and plans!

Date: Friday, May 29, 2009
Time: 3:00pm - 4:00pm EST
Location: Via Conference Call (Dial-in and pass code to be provided the day before the event by e-mail.)
Cost: No charge for current Wharton Club of South Florida members. Registration closes Thursday, May 28th at 4:00pm EST. (Note: although there is no event registration fee for Wharton Club members, "seating" will be limited at this event--please register only if you are confident you'll be able to attend.)
Register: Click here to register or visit http://www.whartonsouthfla.com/.

Professor Robert F. Stambaugh is the Miller Anderson & Sherrerd professor of Finance and Economics at the Wharton School. He has been with Wharton since 1979 and has also taught at the University of Chicago and Harvard University. Professor Stambaugh's areas of research include asset pricing, portfolio theory and econometrics. In the past he has been the editor of the "Journal of Finance" and is currently on the Editorial Committee of the "Annual Review of Financial Economics". His numerous awards include the prestigious Goldman Sachs Asset Management Award.

FCLA's Creative Writing Courses Begin June 1‏

Registration is now open for FCLA’s creative writing courses—screenwriting, memoir, environmental writing and flash fiction. Scroll down for details.

It’s summer school you won’t want to miss!
Classes start Monday, June 1, 2009

The Building Blocks of Great Screenwriting
Instructor: Ben Odell

ONE DAY CLASS: Saturday, June 6, 2009, 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

In this intensive, four-hour master class, award-winning producer and screenwriter Ben Odell teaches the essential elements of screenplays from structure to character development, dialogue and beyond. Using clips from feature movies and short films as examples, he breaks down story structure into its simplest form. He will also discuss strategies to break into the industry, including how to format a script, seek representation and get your work in front of producers.
Ben Odell is a partner in Panamax Films and has produced or written a dozen features over the course of his career, including Sangre de mi Sangre (Blood of My Blood), winner of the Grand Jury Prize at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival (under the title Padre Nuestro) and two-time Independent Spirit Award nominee. Odell most recently co-wrote and produced the psychological thriller Sin Memoria for Hollywood studio Lionsgate. Sin Memoria will be released this fall. He holds an MFA in film from Columbia University.

Turning Memories into Memoir
Instructor: Neil de la Flor

Six Mondays: June 1-July 6, 2009, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Join this fun and innovative introductory course to memoir writing. Open to everyone, from beginners to advanced writers, this course will encourage students to find what they've forgotten and turn those memories into fabulous works of prose and poetry. Through innovative writing techniques, such as exquisite corpse and other in-class writing games, students will experiment with language as a way to access their sub/unconscious memories. Students are encouraged to bring in old photo albums, thoughtful letters from family and friends, and other keepsakes to help jumpstart the process.

Neil de la Flor’s literary work has appeared most recently in Court Green, No Tell Motel, Hayden’s Ferry Review, Sentence, and Barrow Street. He is also the co-author of Facial Geometry, (NeO Pepper Press) a chapbook of collaborative triads written with Maureen Seaton and Kristine Snodgrass. He is lives in Miami, Florida.

Writing Earth—An Intro to Environmental Writing
Instructor: Michel Hettich

Six Tuesdays: June 2-July 7, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

In this six-week workshop we will write and critique poems, stories and personal essays that take the natural world as their subject matter. In addition, we will attempt various writing exercises designed to develop students’ abilities to write in organic forms and to think in ways that attempt to capture something of the “inner life” of nature as it exists in South Florida and the larger North American landscape. We will also examine examples of great nature writing as we attempt to extend and deepen our conception of the genre’s possibilities.

Michael Hettich has published a number of books and chapbooks of poetry, most recently Flock and Shadow: New and Selected Poems (New Rivers Press) and Swimmer Dreams (Turning Point), both of which were published in 2005. His most recent chapbook, Many Loves, was published in 2007. A new book, Like Happiness, is forthcoming from Anhinga Press in 2010. His poems have appeared in such journals as Witness, Poetry East, Orion, Prairie Schooner, and TriQuarterly. His website is Michaelhettich.com.

Writing Really Short Stories—All About Flash Fiction
Instructor: David Beaty

Six Thursdays: June 4-July 9, 2009, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.

Flash fiction? Sudden, mini, micro, postcard, short-short? These are names for very short stories, between 250 and 1,750 words long. The genre is experimental, the word length variable. In this workshop we’ll investigate very short stories, and we’ll write our own. We’ll read and discuss anecdotes, scenes, advertisements, jokes, parables, prose poems, and very short fiction by established writers such as Hemingway, Peter Altenberg, and Jayne Anne Phillips. Expect writing exercises in workshop, and be prepared to bring in your own very short fiction to be discussed.

David Beaty has lived and worked in Greece, England and Brazil. A graduate of Columbia College, he earned an MFA in Creative Writing from Florida International University, where he was a recipient of the Josephine Friedman Award For Fiction. His short stories have appeared in Miami Noir, Unbound Press, Having A Wonderful Time, and other anthologies and literary journals. His short story, "Ghosts," was chosen for The Best American Mystery Stories 2000; and, most recently, his story, "The Last Of Lord Jitters," received honorable mention in The Best American Mystery Stories 2007, edited by Carl Hiaasen.

DailyCandy Miami - Cheap Talk‏

Cheap Talk
Ten Things to Do Under $10

For all Miami’s cheap talk (“Your lips look so natural!”), the city is pricey. But even in the land of $32 valet parking, there’s plenty to do for less than ten bucks.

1. Trek to Homestead for a $5 strawberry papaya milkshake from the Robert Is Here fruit stand (gas not included).

2. Challenge your conceptions of the female archetype at artist Kate Gilmore’s free exhibit at Locust Projects’s new gallery space.

3. Watch hi-def screenings of Cannes film fest winners, including The Class (like Lean on Me, but in French) at the Miami Beach Cinematheque for $10.

4. Root for a jai alai player. The Basque sport is like lacrosse on speed; general admission is only $1.

5. Bet a couple bucks on the ponies at Calder Race Course. Go Memorial Day and feast on the $1 specials (hot dogs, BBQ chicken, watermelon, and corn on the cob).

6. Take a bottle to Lincoln Road’s Maya Tapas & Grill (corkage fees are waived Monday through Wednesday) and pair it with a chorizo appetizer for $8.95.

7. Read Aleksandar Hemon’s The Lazarus Project, the beautifully written mystery just came out in paperback — used $9.15. (Follow it up with his slightly pricier new release.)

8. Serve dinner or play with children as a volunteer with the Community Partnership for Homeless.

9. Pose in warrior one at Bayfront Park’s free outdoor yoga classes, Mondays and Wednesdays at 6 p.m. and Saturdays at 9 a.m.

10. Pick up a few mangoes ($1.50 each) at the Vagabond Market, open daily (7301 Biscayne Boulevard; 305-754-2866). Then go eat them on the giant, free beach.

Casting Calls

Casting Call: TLC and Kelly Ripa are seeking female inventors who want to turn their ideas into million-dollar businesses. A new series on TLC from Milojo Productions will help women inventors get their ideas from concept stage to the manufacturing and marketing stages to sell it on the Home Shopping Network. Women who are ambitious and have an idea or are working on a prototype should apply now at www.milojo.com/casting.

Daily Candy- new Pizza place in design district

Easy As Pie
Pizza Volante Opens

Design District, you already hold a big slice of Miami’s fashion, art, and food scene. Now you want more?

Ambitious. But you do have Jonathan Eismann’s new venture, Pizza Volante, opening tomorrow.

A “pizzeria and mozzarella parlor” (so called by Eismann’s 3-year-old daughter), Volante serves pies the Roman way: baked thin in a wood-burning oven. Fresh toppings include Vito’s mozzarella, guanciale from Niman Ranch, and cacciatorini (wild boar sausage).

Purists will enjoy the mozzarella bar with trimmings like organic and unfiltered olive oils, local tomatoes, arugula, zucchini fritti, and caponata.

The polished concrete floors, stainless steel kitchen fixtures, and orange Kartell chairs are so you, DD. But the eighteen wines under $18, glasses as low as $3.50, and cans of Bud for a buck (organic Florida brew costs a bit more) make the nabe more affordable.

Not a pie in the sky.

Pizza Volante, 3918 North Miami Avenue, Design District (305-573-5325).

La strada

(Directed by Federico Fellini/Italy/1954)

With Anthony Quinn, Giulietta Masina, Richard Basehart

There has never been a face quite like that of Giulietta Masina. Her husband, the legendary Federico Fellini, directs her as Gelsomina in La strada, the film that launched them both to international stardom. Gelsomina is sold by her mother into the employ of Zampanò (Anthony Quinn), a brutal strongman in a traveling circus. When Zampanò encounters an old rival in highwire artist the Fool (Richard Basehart), his fury is provoked to its breaking point. With La strada, Fellini left behind the familiar signposts of Italian neorealism for a poetic fable of love and cruelty, evoking brilliant performances and winning the hearts of audiences and critics worldwide.

In Italian with English subtitles.

“A low-key mood study about a broken-down carnival strongman and his half-wit assistant traveling through the bleak backwaters of post-war Italy wouldn't, at first glance, appear to have much going for it in the way of international critical and commercial appeal. But from the moment of its release in 1954, it was clear that La strada had everything.”-David Ehrenstein

The Class

(Directed by Laurent Cantet/France/2008)

With François Bégaudeau, Nassim Amrabt, Laura Bacuela, Juliette Damaille

François and his fellow teachers prepare for a new year at a high school in a tough neighborhood. Armed with the best intentions, they brace themselves to not let discouragement stop them from trying to give the best education to their students. Cultures and attitudes often clash in the classroom, a microcosm of contemporary France. As amusing and inspiring as the teenaged students can be, their difficult behavior can still jeapordize any teacher's enthusiasm for the low-paying job. François insists on an atmosphere of respect and diligence. Neither stuffy nor severe, his extravagant frankness often takes the students by surprise. But his classroom ethics are put to the test when his students begin to challenge his methods...

Miami Vice-Art:

It can be simple or elaborate, but anyway you slice it, nothing beats a good sandwich. This week we're spreading it thick and piling it high, servin' you up a delicious stack of some of the best sandwiches this bread-lovin' town of ours has to offer.

Sandwiches go well with everything, but it takes a hefty hoagie to stand against the bubbly. Cristina O was pleasantly surprised when she Whisk-ed up lunch: "We opened a bottle of Moët Chandon Nectar Imperiale and let me tell you, when a sandwich can hold its own to Moët, you know you found a winner!" Cheers to that! Just down the street is 1909, easily one of Nydia G's favorite sub shops: "They have a pretty big selection (40+) of freshly-made sandwiches – everything from pork to vegetarian."

Eve C's dinner at Jimmy'z consisted of roast beef, brie cheese, and caramelized onions on toasted bread. It also turned out to possibly be the best 'wich she has ever eaten in her life: "Every bite was better than the last." Across the beach, La Sandwicherie is très adored for its sauce, cornichons, and late-night hours. Jorge R sums it up: "The formula is very simple: use fresh meats, fresh veggies, and combine with a delicious homemade house dressing and you have a killer sandwich." Nearby Sandolab keeps the midnight oil burning, staying open until 6am (on weekends), and customers are encouraged to experiment and create their own sandos. Brandon B's a believer after his roast beef with blue cheese, fried onions, and jalepeños "beat the crap out of anything you would get in one of the big national chains."

When craving a cubano, Dan B bites into a fantastic media noche at Islas Canarias – "crispy and buttery Cuban bread, hot and delicious pork/ham/cheese, and the perfect amount of pickles and mustard." That said, Adrian P opts for a Sarussi original: "What makes Sarussi's version so unique is their secret sauce... don't bother asking them about it, they'll just laugh at you." Meanwhile, Armando L pulls into Liberty Gas Station for their masterpiece, the pan con bistec: "Huge, tasty, always freshly made with Cuban bread and string fries. Did I say huge? A feast for one, plenty for two people, even enough for three, on a diet." A pan con bistec diet? We'll steak a claim to that!

Where do you like to get your sand-o-love? Tell us on Talk.

From the Big Give

In order to change it up and hopefully get some more participation, May's Big Give is a suggestion that is completely free, easy to do and could improve health and reduce stress. Believe it or not, there are new studies being performed that show the healing powers of being connected directly to the earth by walking barefoot. There is even a name for it -- earthing. The earth has a natural electrical charge that can act as a powerful anti-oxidant throughout the body. The body is also a conductor of electricity. So this month, I am asking you to spend 20 minutes, 2 times per week walking barefoot. Take your family to the beach and walk barefoot in the sand or go for a barefoot walk in the park. Spend some time without your cell phone or blackberry and just connect with whoever you are with and whatever you are doing. Take 20 minutes for your health and sanity.

I know this is a change of pace for my monthly email and a few of you will think I have gone off the deep end but what can it hurt. Nothing. In fact, if you dont want to do it, please make a small donation to your favorite charity.

The 400 Blows (Les Quatre cents coups)

(Directed by François Truffaut/France/1959)

With Jean-Pierre Léaud, Claire Marier, Albert Rémy

François Truffaut's first feature, The 400 Blows (Les quatre cents coups), is also his most personal. Told through the eyes of Truffaut's life-long cinematic counterpart, Antoine Doinel (Jean-Pierre Léaud), The 400 Blows sensitively re-creates the trials of Truffaut's own difficult childhood, unsentimentally portraying aloof parents, oppressive teachers, petty crime, and a friendship that would last a lifetime. The film marks Truffaut's passage from leading critic of the French New Wave to his emergence as one of Europe's most brilliant auteurs. In French with English subtitles.

WINNER: Cannes Film Festival Best Director

New York Film Critics best Foreign Language Film

“François Truffaut's first feature, The 400 Blows (Les Quatre cents coups), was more than a semi-autobiographical film; it was also an elaboration of what the French New Wave directors would embrace as the caméra-stylo (camera-as-pen) whose écriture (writing style) could express the filmmaker as personally as a novelist's pen.”
