Cremata Fine Art presents a solo exhibition by Santo

Opening reception: Friday, November 7th, 2008, 7:00 p.m.

Location: Cremata Fine Art. 1646 SW 8th Street. Miami, FL 33135

Dates: From October 18th, 2008 through November 14th, 2008

Regular Hours: Tuesday - Saturday 12:00 - 6:00 p.m. and Mondays by appointment

Away from South Florida for close to two years, Havana-born Santos Mendez rejoices in nature and tropical life. Loyal followers can now delight in his poetic and stylized approach to Antillean patios, palm trees, and colonial interiors. His work stems from a life of fulfillment in the interaction between the observation of nature and forging a colorful style. Art critics have praised Santos for his approach to landscapes and still lifes, and interiors that remind us of modernist master René Portocarrero. This first exhibit of his recent work also includes exciting tributes to Caribbean dance and music.
Santos has been the recipient numerous public recognitions including the "Carnival Miami" Award presented by The Kiwanis of Little Havana. He appears in Avancemos, second edition, a textbook for students distributed throughout high schools in the United States and Canada.
Santos is being represented by Cremata Fine Art.

Tango classes- Daily Candy

Reach for the Stars
Argentine Tango Dance Classes

You’ve always wanted to be on a reality TV show. Is it your lack of dignity? Nope. It’s your love of dance.

Learn to tango without Dancing with the Stars with classes from Baila.

Fabian de Cardenas, the maestro in charge, has been training Cheryl Burke wannabes for more than ten years. His specialty: Argentine tango.

Ballroom’s sexy cousin, the Argentine variation is performed in an abrazo (embrace). Fabian teaches the basics, along with more complicated steps like the boleo (a quick kick around your knee) and gancho (hooking your leg around your partner’s).

Find someone to lead and take a group class, offered Thursdays at 8 p.m. (There’s a free offer on their website.) Have performance anxiety? Fabian also teaches private lessons.

’Cause not everything should be done in public.

Available at Bijoux Dance Center, 4150 Southwest 70th Court, South Miami (305-338-3189). For more information, go to dreamtheatreproductions.net.

Dia de los Muertos gets some PopLife
It's that time of the year, ghouls and boys – when we fill our sugary caloric voids with candy corn, ladies show off their naughty sides, and everything's just a tad bit more spooktacular. Halloween is here, folks, but don't start calling the Ghostbusters just yet; this Weekly's got some costume tricks and party treats to get you ready for some of the creepiest Hallows' Eve broohahas in Miami. Bwahaha!

Same old, Same Grove? There is still no excuse for not looking sinister, or at least like a sexy vampire airline stewardess. Once you've got an idea (or seven), head to your closest costume shop or vintage store to score. Cindy W stocks up on throwback finds at Miami Twice, where you're guaranteed to find a retro chic or oh-so-mod outfit perfect for the Return to New Year's Eve,1967 party. Roaring '20s more your speed? Pick up a flapper ensemble and head over the causeway to go back in time to swank and class with Erin E at the Florida Room's Prohibiton Party. Brendan O' Hara and the Big Bounce will have you swingin' and fox trottin' all night long... can Dorothy Parker-esque speakeasiness be far behind?

Or sink your fangs into a cult classic at the special Rocky Horror Picture Show fundraiser or Miami Beach Cinemateque, where they'll be screening the original Nosferatu with a live performance by cellist Aaron Merritt. Eerie! But if you really want to get those chills running down your spine, sign up for the official Ghosts of Miami tour at City Cemetery, where you and other brave souls will learn about all kinds of things that go bump in the night!

Too scared to step outside? Then stay home and pass out sweet treats to the kiddies. Ginger H and Felicia W prefer their peppermint patties on the frozen side, while Sabrina C enjoys picking up a box of festive Halloween brownies from the Brownie Factory. Between doorbell rings, practice your pumpkin carving skills while watching a stack of thrillers from Lion Video. Can't decide between Freddy, Chucky or Pinhead? Yelpers are screaming about their favorite frightening flicks, just dying to share, really.

Karmadoctor in Miami next week

Knowing your life purpose is essential in order to thrive. It is not only important that we understand why we are here but know what we need to do in order to get there. There is a lot of fear in the world right now. My experience is that when we are comfortable we tend to avoid our personal work. Times of financial crisis can make us more desperate and survivalistic or it can make us dig deeper into making our life more authentic and meaningful. The inner world is where we find what we need to handle the outside world.

This is the purpose of the work I’ve been doing full time for the last 18 years. I have given 10000 + sessions. My job is to provide accurate reflection as to where you really are on the path and how to move forward and to find the opportunities that are present in all things that arise in our day to day life. I have used the modality of hands, fingerprints and astrology to attract people into this deeper process but it’s the deeper process that will ultimately transform your life.

I will be giving two talks on my work with demonstrations and I have included flyers for them. Please pass this email and the flyers to 10 people you know who might benefit from the my free talks or through private sessions. The details are below.

I look forward to working with you on this trip.

CLAUDE CHABROL: Then and Now: (NOW)

A Girl Cut in Two (Claude Chabrol/France/2008)

(La Fille coupée en deux)

With Ludivine Sagnier, Francois Berleand, Benoit Magimel, Mathilda May

The French master of suspense Claude Chabrol returns with the razor-sharp, darkly seductive comedy, A Girl Cut In Two. Gabrielle Deneige (Ludivine Sagnier of Swimming Pool) is an independent, ambitious TV weather girl torn between her love of a distinguished author several decades her senior (Francois Berleand), and the attentions of a headstrong, potentially unstable young suitor (Benoit Magimel). An unspoken past between the two men heightens tensions, and though she's initially certain of her love for one of them, the see-saw demands and whims of both men keep confusing - and darkening - matters. Before long she's encountering emotional and societal forces well beyond her control, inexorably leading to a shocking clash of violence and passion. It is trademark Chabrol: fiendishly entertaining and impossible to shake.

29 WED 8:30pm: “Cine-IMPROV!”
"Politics, anyone?"...(you betcha!)

A LIVE "DogGonnit" Comedic Jam served with cinema on the side!

Miami’s hottest improv actors perform unscripted theater based on your suggestions, in the

art of “long form improv," rather than the typical comedy you see at the clubs and on TV. Including film dubbing, the "Armando Diaz Experience," and a live improvised "movie" based on the life experiences of one of our audience members, with stylistic parody, edits, comedic characters, and other scenic devices.

This month’s theme: POLITICS, anyone? (you betcha!)

“The Cine-Improv troupe works at a higher level than even the pros you see on Comedy Central, late-night TV, and at clubs. Their improvised take on film removes the middleman and leaves him (rolling) on the cut-up room floor (in this case that's the Miami Beach Cinematheque).”--Greg Baker New Times

BOOGIEMAN: The Lee Atwater Story

(Documentary/Stefan Forbes/USA/2008)

Featuring Mary Matalin, Mike Dukakis, Bob Novak, Sam Donaldson, Tom Delay, Howard Fineman, Ishmael Reed, and various other scary politicos!

The epic story of a Southern boy’s rambunctious rise from humble roots to political rock star. Atwater was the godfather of modern negative campaigning. He helped elect threee Republican Presidents with the vision of politics as war. But on his deathbed, Atwater apologized for everything. Or did he? Take a political marketing history tour, and see where Karl Rove and company got their ideas. Does negative sleaze-o-rama campaining win the White House?

“HILARIOUSLY SHOCKING!”—IndieWire.com

“A must-see!”—Jonathan Martin, Politico.com

“Atwater’s spirit roars back to life. A compelling portrait. The movie isn’t a knee-jerk lefty hit job. In fact, it shows that Atwater was a runaway success not just because he was a devious political operator, but because, in the words of one liberal reporter Forbes interviewed, the sass-talking, guitar-playing Atwater “was the most fun man I ever met.” -Patrick Goldstein, LA Times

Nosferatu (Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens)

(F.W. Murnau/Germany/1922)

Starring Max Schreck, Alexander Granach, Greta Schroeder

An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau (Sunrise, Faust, The Last Laugh). Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws—perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned. Nosferatu was an atypical expressionist film in that much of it was shot on location. While directors such as Lang and Lubitsch built vast forests and entire towns within the studio, Nosferatu’s landscapes, villages and castle were actual locations in the Carpathian mountains. Murnau was thus able to infuse the story with the subtle tones of nature: both pure

and fresh as well as twisted and sinister.

“AN AMAZINGLY VIBRANT RESTORATION of the Murnau masterpiece!"

—Richard Brody, The New Yorker

This is the new restoration version of the film, derived from a a new high definition transfer. The film's score will be supplemented by a LIVE performance by former NWS cellist Aaron Merritt!

Obama-Closer To The Dream

A feature-length documentary by Guetty Felin and Hervé Cohen/2008

February 2008: captivated by the new found hope in America, France-based American expatriate, Guetty Felin and French husband Hervé Cohen, journey to America in the hopes of grasping a better sense of the movement that is energizing so many Americans, whether Democrats, Independents or even Republicans. As the couple journey from state to state during the Democratic primaries, From Texas to Oregon, they unearth the personal, compelling stories of an array of charismatic individuals and supporters. Glimpses of Senator Obama in Town Hall meetings and rallies, interwoven with the work of his supporters, help illuminate the issues preoccupying most Americans today: the economy, equal opportunities, social justice, the war. Closer to the Dream aims to encapsulate the essence of an historical moment in America and the movement that is uniting diverse constituents all across the nation. Shot in cinema verité style, the film paints an engaging portrait of not only Barack Obama, but also those who find a part of themselves in him, introducing us to a new face of America, ready to mark a new chapter in its history. For more info visit www.obama-closertothedream.ning.com.

Co-Directors Guetty Felin and Hervé Cohen will introduce the film and be present for Q&A afterwards, with a reception to follow.

Il Barbiere de Siviglia (by Rossini)

An Opera Buffa in Two Acts with intermission

Performance at: Teatro La Fenice, Venice, Date of performance: April 2008

Approximate running time: 2 hours and 37 minutes

Music: Gioacchino Rossini, Libretto Cesare Sterbini based on Beaumarchais's comedy Le Barbiere de Séville, Conductor: Antonino Fogliani Director: Bepi Morassi Cast: Roberto Frontali, baritone: Figaro, Rinat Shaham, mezzo-soprano: Rosina, Francesco Meli, tenor: Count Almavia, Bruno de Simone, baritone: Dr. Bartolo, Giovanni Furlanetto, bass: Don Basilio

About IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA

This “Opera Buffa”, (inspiring stories to this day, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), was hated at its first original performance only to become a hit within a week, is one of the most performed operas worldwide, and certainly Rossini’s most famous and beloved. It features numerous Arias that have reached such a status of fame to sound familiar to anyone’s ears (i.e. Figaro’s signature Aria Largo al factotum and Rosina’s final Aria Una voce poco fa) along with some of Rossini’s most brilliant sextets involving the entire company. In the form of comedy, Il Barbiere di Siviglia tells the story of Rosina who refuses to marry Doctor Bartolo, her guardian, as she is in love with Lindoro (the Count Almaviva in disguise). After many twists and tricks, and thanks to the strategic help of Figaro, Lindoro (the Count of Almaviva) and Rosina finally succeed in getting married.

Spanish speaking field organizers needed TODAY! - PAID!

Queridos lideres -

We have a great opportunity to expand the campaign's outreach to our community -- and support our own.

The Campaign for Change is in urgent need of spanish speaking Deputy Field Organizers (DFO). This is a paid position. Please send any leads over today.

The job involves walking throughout our communities and knocking on people's doors to encourage them to vote and to support Barack Obama. From now through 10/31, the DFO works 6 hour shifts. From 11/1 through election day, DFOs will need to work 9am -9pm. It would be best if someone has their own car.

If you know of someone who would be appropriate, please contact someone on our team - David Shahoulian (obamahispanicoutreach@yahoo.com; 305-803-1516) or Maggie Osdoby Katz (floridaporelcambio@gmail.com, 646-591-3212). This is a chance for people to be part of this historic campaign in a very structured way.

Update e-mail coming shortly on other events for coming week. Please block off your Saturday for 'Muevete por Obama' - a few hours of canvassing, cornering and eating good food.

Gracias,
Patrick

This Holiday Season, Give to Those in Need

This Holiday Season, Give to Those in Need

Joanna

With the holidays approaching, many of us are preparing for a Thanksgiving feast with our families and friends. In keeping with the holiday spirit of caring and sharing, we must not forget about those thousands of people in our community who will not have the means to have a Thanksgiving meal. Please help Hands On Miami with its annual food collection. Last year, 3,000 people received our donations. This year, in the midst of our economic situation, our efforts as a community are more important than ever before.

The food that is donated will go to the women and children served by the Overtown YWCA, and to families served by Sant La, a Haitian neighborhood agency. These recipients are struggling to make ends meet and could use all of the help they can get. Donations can be dropped off on November 20 and 21 at Keiser University in Kendall or at the Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Miami. UPS has generously offered to pick up larger quantities of food donations. Please contact me to schedule a pick-up.

Also, our annual gift drive will take place on the days leading up to December 13. Donated gifts will bring happy memories to children and teens who would usually receive nothing. The gifts we collect will be given to children of migrant workers, children of women who have suffered from domestic abuse, disadvantaged children associated with the Overtown YWCA and to children of women living with HIV/AIDS.

The Golden Voice of Peru - EVA AYLLON Performs Nov. 1‏

EVA AYLLON
November 1 @ 8 p.m.
Knight Concert Hall

"Peruvian magic... (Ayllón's) potent voice recalls the passion and intensity of Celia Cruz and Cesaria Evora." - Los Angeles Times

"A Peruvian superstar" (The Washington Post), Ayllón is the top interpreter of the elegant and lively música criolla — that crowd-pleasing blend of indigenous Peruvian, African, and Spanish music that, with the percussive cajón at its center, can one moment sound like flamenco and like Andean mountain music the next.

Eva Ayllón has performed on stage alongside such Latin music stars as Marc Anthony and Gilberto Santa Rosa!

The title of her latest recording (her 20th) says it all: Eva! Leyenda Peruana.

Hear a music clip from Eva here.

What to Bring with you to Vote!

Toolkit Tip Sheet

Print this tip sheet and take it with you to the polling location and be ELECTION READY!

When voting at any voting location, whether at an early voting site or on Election Day, be sure to remember the following:

Please bring a current and valid identification that contains your name and photograph and signature. Acceptable forms of identification include:

State of Florida Driver's License
ID Card issued by the State of Florida
U. S. Passport
Debit/Credit Cards
Military ID
Student ID
Retirement Center ID
Public Assistance ID
Neighborhood Association ID

The identification at the polls is used solely to confirm the voter's identity – not to verify the voter's ID number or address. The photo on the ID is compared to the person standing before the poll worker and the signature is matched against the signature that the voter puts on the precinct register when he or she signs in to vote. For further details, please refer to the Florida Department of State web site and the memorandum sent to the Florida Supervisors of Elections.

If you do not have a valid and current identification, you may be asked to vote using a provisional ballot.

Please remember to bring your Voter Information Card with you to vote. While it is not mandatory that you bring voter information card, it may help expedite your voting experience.

If you recently registered to vote and you find that your name is not in the registration book, do not leave. First, ask an elections poll worker if there is a supplemental registration list. Secondly, ask the election workers to call the Miami-Dade County Elections office and issue you a provisional ballot.

If you have any questions about how to operate a voting machine, be sure to, ask a poll worker for help.

Precincts in Miami-Dade County are open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day.

When voting on a paper ballot, be sure to completely fill in the oval next to the candidate of your choice.

Be sure to review both sides of your ballot page(s) before casting your voter on the optical scanner to ensure your choices are accurate.

Daily Candy- Halloween costumes

Stroke of Genius
Body Art by Keegan

Thinking up a Halloween costume always makes you break into a sweat.

A velvet cape and rubber mask when it’s 89 degrees — may as well dress as a sauna.

Or keep it cool: Call body artist Keegan Hitchcock. She specializes in face painting, stage makeup, henna designs, and full-body airbrushing/painting — all with high-quality, professional materials that aren’t harmful to skin.

As far as design, anything goes (cartoon, sci-fi, horror, literary character, beauty, animal, woodland), and she’s happy to fulfill special requests or adapt to a party theme.

For face painting, Keegan can do fifteen to twenty people in an hour, but full-body art usually involves a consultation by phone, special accessories (fake eyelashes, hairpieces, feathers, colored contact lenses), and up to several hours for your full transformation into a fantastical creature.

Best book now to get a Halloween appointment.

No sweat.
