Trouble the Water
(Carl Deal and Tia Lessin/Documentary/USA/2008)
Winner of the Grand Jury Prize for Documentary at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, this astonishingly powerful documentary is at once horrifying and exhilarating. Directed and produced by Fahrenheit 9/11 and Bowling for Columbine producers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, Trouble the Water takes you inside Hurricane Katrina in a way never before seen on screen -- with Kimberly Rivers Roberts, an aspiring rap artist, turning her new video camera on herself and her 9th Ward neighbors trapped in a drowning city. It goes way beyond just one hurricane, and portrays a wealth of information on the American spirit.

The Making of Rolling
This project started out as an idea. Our hope is that this project will show people that South Florida has the talent and resources to create something fun, unique and entertaining for all the world to see. This “idea” turned into a script, and for a while, that’s all it was; just a bunch of lines on a bunch of pages, all tied together in a cute little booklet. Eventually, these guys realized that they were surrounded by professionals in the entertainment business who, much like them, hungered to do something more. Most of us already work fifteen-hour days as assistants in this industry , but we believed in this so much that, for two months, we all sacrificed late nights and weekends to bring it to life. This film has a budget of zero dollars. The money being spent (truck rentals, clearances, etc.) has come out of our pockets. This is our story and these are our voices. And this is only the beginning.
This is a complimentary public awareness event for the local filmmaking community. Q&A with cast & crew!

Sisters On The Planet
(Oxam America/Documentary/USA/2008)
As obvious as it sounds, climate change affects everybody. But climate change is already having
a disproportionate impact on people in poor communities, and it’s hitting women hardest. It’s
not the easiest idea to understand, so to help explain we’ve made these short films about women, in both rich and poor countries, who are determined to do whatever they can to put a stop to climate change. Watch them and become aware of the impact our changing climate is having on people’s lives. And be inspired to join the fight against climate change too.
This is a complimentary public awareness event. The film will be followed by a discussion with representatives from Oxfam America and CARE, organizations dedicated to ending poverty and social injustice.

MICHAEL MOORE’s Latest Documentary
This is your “reminder to vote” event: Get off the couch and vote!
Slacker Uprising
(Michael Moore/Documentary/USA/2008)
No one can make a political documentary with as much savvy, humor, and creativity as Oscar winner Michael Moore. And no one is as willing to tackle our elected officials with the same tenacity. After unleashing Bowling for Columbine, Fahrenheit 9/11, and SiCKO in recent years, Moore has set his sights on the Bush administration and our nation's voter turnout in his latest film, Slacker Uprising, which chronicles his 62-city swing state tour of college campuses just prior to the 2004 election. Part concert tour, part stand-up comedy performance and part rock concert, Slacker Uprising is an uplifting and patriotic look at the birth of a new political generation in America . Along with Moore's appearance, Slacker Uprising features live performances or appearances by Eddie Vedder (of Pearl Jam), Roseanne Barr, Joan Baez,
Tom Morello (of Rage Against the Machine), R.E.M., Steve Earle, and Viggo Mortensen.

CLAUDE CHABROL: Then and Now: (THEN)
Le Boucher (The Butcher)
(Claude Chabrol/France/1969)
With Stéphane Audran, Jean Yanne, Antonio Passalia
It is unusual for a single film to reshape the whole perception of the work of a major filmmaker. Claude Chabrol was seen as the cruel portraitist of the French bourgeoisie, but he was not just that. In 1969, during the boiling point of an ideological heating-up of the entire French society, he took an incredible step back, to get a larger view, a broader comprehension of the world as a cosmic whole, beyond good and evil. The resulting film, Le Boucher, is a love story with a serial killer loose. This is what filmmaking can do: allow for the peaceful merging of two genres that seem to exclude one another, the murder story and the romance. The butcher Popaul (Yanne) is the flesh, the school headmistress (Audran) is the mind. Paradise is lost forever, and this too is what Chabrol’s subtle cinema is about. -Jean-Michel Frodon, 1001 Movies You Must See Before You Die In French with English subtitles

“A classically simple but relentlessly probing thriller!”—Time Out
"Le Boucher has us always thinking. What do they know, what do they think, what do they want? The film builds to an emotional and physical climax which I will not describe, except to urge you to pay particular attention to a sequence toward the end where Chabrol cuts from her face to his.”—Roger Ebert

A Girl Cut in Two (Claude Chabrol/France/2008)
(La Fille coupée en deux)
With Ludivine Sagnier, Francois Berleand, Benoit Magimel, Mathilda May
The French master of suspense Claude Chabrol returns with the razor-sharp, darkly seductive comedy, A Girl Cut In Two. Gabrielle Deneige (Ludivine Sagnier of Swimming Pool) is an independent, ambitious TV weather girl torn between her love of a distinguished author several decades her senior (Francois Berleand), and the attentions of a headstrong, potentially unstable young suitor (Benoit Magimel). An unspoken past between the two men heightens tensions, and though she's initially certain of her love for one of them, the see-saw demands and whims of both men keep confusing - and darkening - matters. Before long she's encountering emotional and societal forces well beyond her control, inexorably leading to a shocking clash of violence and passion. It is trademark Chabrol: fiendishly entertaining and impossible to shake.

"Politics, anyone?"...(you betcha!)
A LIVE "DogGonnit" Comedic Jam served with cinema on the side!
Miami’s hottest improv actors perform unscripted theater based on your suggestions, in the
art of “long form improv," rather than the typical comedy you see at the clubs and on TV. Including film dubbing, the "Armando Diaz Experience," and a live improvised "movie" based on the life experiences of one of our audience members, with stylistic parody, edits, comedic characters, and other scenic devices.
This month’s theme: POLITICS, anyone? (you betcha!)
“The Cine-Improv troupe works at a higher level than even the pros you see on Comedy Central, late-night TV, and at clubs. Their improvised take on film removes the middleman and leaves him (rolling) on the cut-up room floor (in this case that's the Miami Beach Cinematheque).”--Greg Baker New Times

BOOGIEMAN: The Lee Atwater Story
(Documentary/Stefan Forbes/USA/2008)
Featuring Mary Matalin, Mike Dukakis, Bob Novak, Sam Donaldson, Tom Delay, Howard Fineman, Ishmael Reed, and various other scary politicos!
The epic story of a Southern boy’s rambunctious rise from humble roots to political rock star. Atwater was the godfather of modern negative campaigning. He helped elect threee Republican Presidents with the vision of politics as war. But on his deathbed, Atwater apologized for everything. Or did he? Take a political marketing history tour, and see where Karl Rove and company got their ideas. Does negative sleaze-o-rama campaining win the White House?
“HILARIOUSLY SHOCKING!”—IndieWire.com
“A must-see!”—Jonathan Martin, Politico.com
“Atwater’s spirit roars back to life. A compelling portrait. The movie isn’t a knee-jerk lefty hit job. In fact, it shows that Atwater was a runaway success not just because he was a devious political operator, but because, in the words of one liberal reporter Forbes interviewed, the sass-talking, guitar-playing Atwater “was the most fun man I ever met.” -Patrick Goldstein, LA Times

Nosferatu (Nosferatu, eine Symphonie des Grauens)
(F.W. Murnau/Germany/1922)
Starring Max Schreck, Alexander Granach, Greta Schroeder
An unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula, Nosferatu is the quintessential silent vampire film, crafted by legendary German director F. W. Murnau (Sunrise, Faust, The Last Laugh). Rather than depicting Dracula as a shape-shifting monster or debonair gentleman, Murnau’s Graf Orlok (as portrayed by Max Schreck) is a nightmarish, spidery creature of bulbous head and taloned claws—perhaps the most genuinely disturbing incarnation of vampirism yet envisioned. Nosferatu was an atypical expressionist film in that much of it was shot on location. While directors such as Lang and Lubitsch built vast forests and entire towns within the studio, Nosferatu’s landscapes, villages and castle were actual locations in the Carpathian mountains. Murnau was thus able to infuse the story with the subtle tones of nature: both pure
and fresh as well as twisted and sinister.
“AN AMAZINGLY VIBRANT RESTORATION of the Murnau masterpiece!"
—Richard Brody, The New Yorker
This is the new restoration version of the film, derived from a a new high definition transfer. The film's score will be supplemented by a LIVE performance by New World Symphony cellist Aaron Merritt!

Obama-Closer To The Dream
A feature-length documentary by Guetty Felin and Hervé Cohen/2008
February 2008: captivated by the new found hope in America, France-based American expatriate, Guetty Felin and French husband Hervé Cohen, journey to America in the hopes of grasping a better sense of the movement that is energizing so many Americans, whether Democrats, Independents or even Republicans. As the couple journey from state to state during the Democratic primaries, From Texas to Oregon, they unearth the personal, compelling stories of an array of charismatic individuals and supporters. About IL BARBIERE DI SIVIGLIA
This “Opera Buffa”, (inspiring stories to this day, like Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street), was hated at its first original performance only to become a hit within a week, is one of the most performed operas worldwide, and certainly Rossini’s most famous and beloved. It features numerous Arias that have reached such a status of fame to sound familiar to anyone’s ears (i.e. Figaro’s signature Aria Largo al factotum and Rosina’s final Aria Una voce poco fa) along with some of Rossini’s most brilliant sextets involving the entire company. In the form of comedy, Il Barbiere di Siviglia tells the story of Rosina who refuses to marry Doctor Bartolo, her guardian, as she is in love with Lindoro (the Count Almaviva in disguise). After many twists and tricks, and thanks to the strategic help of Figaro, Lindoro (the Count of Almaviva) and Rosina finally succeed in getting married.
