Stealing America: Vote by Vote

(Dorothy Fadiman/documentary/2008)

It is our right as Americans to vote, but in the era of hanging chads and malfunctioning voting machines, how can we be sure that those votes really count? For anyone who ever wondered

just how electronic votes are tallied and hope susceptible voting machines are to tampering, Dorothy Fadiman's eye-opening documentary (which features interviews with the likes of Jon Stewart, John F. Kennedy, Jr. and Stephen Colbert) is sure to make you take pause the

next time you step into a voting booth and cast your ballot.

"Stealing America: Vote by Vote mounts its case with hardheaded numerical logic.

The result will leave you wondering if we're in for a fresh recount disaster this fall."

The Sugar Babies

The Plight of the Children of Agricultural Workers in the Sugar Industry in the Dominican Republic

(Amy Serrano/documentary/2007) Narrated by Edwidge Danticat

Until now, the disturbing remnants of colonial slavery were carefully hidden in paradise.....While exposing those who continue to profit, the feature-length documentary film "The Sugar Babies" vividly explores the lives of the descendants of the first Africans delivered to the island of Hispaniola for the bittersweet commodity that once ruled the world. These very same people continue to be trafficked to work in sugar under circumstances that

can only be considered modern day slavery. “The Sugar Babies" examines the moral price

of sugar -- present and past -- from the perspective of the conditions surrounding the children of sugar cane cutters of Haitian ancestry in the Dominican Republic, and the continuing denial

of their basic human rights.

SATURN IN OPPOSITION
Tuesday, October 14th, 2008 @ 7:30pm
Regal South Beach 1100 Lincoln Road
Somewhere between The Boys In the Band and The Big Chill, this witty and eccentric
drama invites us into a group of old friends, gay and straight, who are tangled
together and pulled apart by death, adultery, and a need to quit smoking.
At the center of it all is a couple so much in love it hurts: Davide (played with
grace by Pierfrancesco Favino), a kind-hearted older writer, and his intoxicatingly
beautiful younger boyfriend, Lorenzo (Luca Argentero). The Almodovar-esque circle
around them includes a straight couple in the midst of a strangely civil marital
implosion, a dreamy-eyed but melancholy junkie (mesmerizing Ambra Angiolini), and
a jovial old queen who calls himself a faggot because he's "old fashioned" (renowned
character actor Ennio Fantastichini). When tragedy hits, they all handle it in their
own oddball ways, but they all, more or less, stay together. And amidst the heartache
and struggle, celebrated writer/director Ferzan Ozpetek (Ignorant Fairies from MGLFF
2002) manages to celebrate some lovely unlikely alliances, including a priceless
late-night chat comparing drug-use with knitting.
Complete with botched dinner parties, long country weekends, gorgeous cinematography
and a mesmerizingly lush score by Italian music wunderkind Neffa, this is a stylish
new take on an enduring cinematic theme: in loss, there's nothing like the warm
embrace of friends. In Italian with English subtitles.

A YEAR WITHOUT LOVE
FREE SCREENING!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
How much loneliness can one man endure? Un año sin amor follows a year in the life
of one Pablo Perez, a handsome intellectual struggling to get his poetry published
while toiling as a French tutor in Buenos Aires during the 1990s.
When he learns he has contracted HIV, he begins a journal to track his journey of
grappling with the disease. Living in a simple, tiny apartment, looking after his
mentally disabled aunt, the intensely introverted Pablo seeks out connection by
composing an artistically masterful personal ad in a local gay magazine. Naturally,
he receives little response, and turns to cruising porn theaters and S&M leather
dungeons. Through the latter, he meets the swarthy macho leather dominator Martin,
whom inflames every level of Pablo's senses - and who is achingly unattainable.
Un año sin amor reflects Pablo's obsession with the beauty of language - both the
written word and the syntax of cinema.
First-time feature director Anahi Berneri employs a grainy cinematography that poetically
imparts a stark, austere, erotic beauty to the harsh and emotionally empty world
that her characters inhabit. Berneri is a master with the close-up, and by varying
them with melancholic long shots she precisely captures a mood of yearning and sorrow
not felt since Ennis del Mar was left alone in his trailer eternally contemplating
a postcard and a bloody shirt. In Spanish with English subtitles.
South Florida Joins in Free Night of Theater Program
South Floridians will get the opportunity to attend a free night of live theatre on October 16.
Theatres stretching from West Palm Beach to Coral Gables will be opening up their doors for Free Night of Theater with performances ranging from large scale musicals to American classics to world premieres, said Theatre League of South Florida (TLSF) President Meredith Lasher. TLSF will be coordinating the Oct. 16 event in South Florida. A list of the participating theatres and their productions will be announced later.
Theatre Communications Group (TCG) – a national organization which promotes theatre – first conceived Free Night of Theater at their National Conference in 2003 as a way to remove perceived barriers that have historically prevented audiences from attending not-for-profit theatre. An estimated 80 per cent of last year’s attendees were first-time theatergoers. Recent attendance data gathered by Shugoll Research reports that over 33% of last year’s first-time theatergoers purchased tickets to another performance following their Free Night experience.
TCG announced today that the second annual Free Night of Theater will be held across the country on Thursday, October 16. On that night theatergoers, including South Floridians, can attend performances being presented by more than 450 selected theatres free of charge as part of this unprecedented campaign to attract new audiences.
According to Brad Erickson, executive director of Theatre Bay Area and participant in the program since its 2005 pilot year, “The support was extraordinary, from our local theater companies and the broader community. The demand from the public for this kind of live artistic experience was overwhelming…tickets went so fast, we had to go back to our companies and ask for more!”
Free Night of Theater venues will be launched on a national website, www.freenightoftheater.net, in September. Several kickoff events will be held across the country and ticket reservations will be available beginning on October 1.
Contact Andie Arthur, TLSF Executive Director, for further information on the program in South Florida.— 954.557.0778. Additional information on TLSF is available at www.southfloridatheatre.com.
ARTS BALLET THEATRE OF FLORIDA OPENS SEASON WITH STRAVINSKY’S “FIREBIRD” AND A WORLD PREMIERE “FUGA CON PAJARILLO”
Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida launches its 2008-2009 season with Vladimir Issaev's version of Igor Stravinsky’s Firebird in the Amaturo Theater of the Broward Center for the Performing Arts on Sunday, October 19, to continue October 25 & 26 at the North Miami Beach Theatre.
With fantastic costumes designed by Jorge Gallardo and Stravinsky’s brilliant score, Firebird returns by popular demand. The ballet tells the tale of a magical firebird ( Solange Villacorta )that helps a heroic prince ( Andrey Konkin ) rescue a beautiful princess ( Nicole Swede or Courtney Lamondin) from Katscheii ( Brian Ruiz ), a sinister force of evil. Stravinsky’s masterpiece includes the Firebird’s exuberant dance followed by variations based on Russian folksongs, the beautiful Round of the Princesses, Katscheii’s rhythmic dance and a romantic lullaby. Gorgeous backdrops by designer Elena Bondarenko along with magical special effects fulfill this wonderful production with choreography of Vladimir Issaev.
The program also includes two neo-classical works by Issaev: “El Encuentro” with music of Albinoni, a several times awarded choreography now performed by Andrey Konkin and beautiful principal dancer Yoshie Oshima and the world premiere of Issaev’s creation for “Fuga con Pajarillo” a very vigorous and energetic dance to the music of Venezuelan composer Aldemaro Romero: a tribute to the recent deceased and famous composer and Issaev’s father in law.
The company features new additions to the corps of dancers: Solange Villacorta, Miho Yoshioka, and Elizabeth Gomez.
Arts Ballet Theatre's founder Vladimir Issaev's has created innovative choreography with a great deal of passion, combining his love affair with neo-classical style, the Latin influence and his strict Russian ballet roots. Born and trained in Russia, he has served as guest ballet master and choreographer for such companies as Les Ballet Jazz de Montreal, Le Jeune Ballet de France and Ballet National de Espana. Before moving to Florida, Issaev served as the ballet master for the National Ballet de Caracas-Teresa Carreño in Venezuela for 10 years.
For more information, visit www.artballettheatre.org or call 305 935 3232.
Tickets are $25 and are available through the Broward Center’s AutoNation Box Office at 954/462-0222 and through the Broward Center's live on-line ticketing at www.browardcenter.org. or at www.boxofficetickets.com and 1800 494 8497. Group discounts are available
