Hollywood Dave & Buster’s to host alcohol-free New Year’s Eve

For a fun, safe and truly unique New Year’s Eve experience, gather up the kids and head over to Dave & Buster’s in Hollywood for the Third Annual Family New Year’s Eve.

The event promises nonstop entertainment in a festive setting from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m., featuring a magician, a face painter, a DJ and dancing, unlimited video game play, billiards and shuffleboard, and all-night buffets – all included in the admission charge of $59.99 for adults and $39.99 for children ages 5 to 12.

The only thing you won’t find at this local New Year’s Eve bash is alcohol – and that’s the whole point of the family friendly event, at the 70,000-square-foot Dave & Buster’s in the Oakwood Plaza.

In the spirit of a New Year’s Eve celebration, virgin specialty drinks, or “mocktails,” will be available for an additional charge. All-night buffets will feature a variety of hot and cold selections, including vegetarian dishes, salads, desserts and 'kid-friendly' finger foods.

The Hollywood Dave & Buster’s also hosts and co-sponsors, along with the Hollywood Gazette, the monthly ‘Party with a Purpose’ series. The happy-hour event, which will continue in the New Year, spotlights and benefits a different local charity each month, providing invaluable funding and exposure for various nonprofit organizations and their causes, as well as serving as a networking opportunity for local professionals who are committed to making a difference in their community.

The Third Annual Family New Year’s Eve at Dave & Buster’s will take place from 7:30 p.m. to 1 a.m. Dec. 31 at 3000 Oakwood Blvd. in the Oakwood Plaza, located at Interstate 95 and Stirling Road. Admission is $59.99 (plus taxes and gratuities) for adults and $39.99 for ages 5 to 12. There is no charge for children younger than 5. Admission includes all entertainment, video game play, all-you-can-eat buffets, soda, tea and coffee.

It's that time of year again, yelpers! And no, we're not just talkin' the holidays. Art Basel Miami Beach's eighth year is finally upon us, so get ready for an artistically-fueled, deliciously-odd rest of the week. Go ahead, call in sick to work, grab your most colorful outfit, and read through this Weekly as we paint you a pretty picture of the days ahead.

Treasured local museums will be dishing out an optical feast in the form of new exhibitions. Whitney R gets her fix of sweet, sweet eye candy at Miami Art Museum, a veritable institution for "innovative and contemporary art." And during Basel, be sure to catch MAM's unveiling of Shepard Fairey's new outdoor public art project! Meanwhile, Elizabeth P is "blown away" by Bass' "thought-provoking and unique" artwork, and you will be too – especially now, since Dzine has decked its halls with a blinged-out mix of street art and Chicano lowrider bike culture. Talk about hot wheels!

Joseluis A and other lovers of emerging visual work will be thrilled to know that Gen Art's Vanguard is setting up shop this year inside Aqua Art Miami in Wynwood for a booth-style fair concurrent with Basel. This is, of course, a very welcome addition to the art warehouse district that already boasts the Margulies Collection, Rubell Family Collection, and Bakehouse Art Complex – all of which will be flaunting their best! BAC will host bac:23 complete with a daily comped breakfast (so much for starving artists), and while you're in the 'wood, peek into Miami Art Space to see Satellite Art + Design's out-of-this-world show.

After taking in the magnificent mélange of fairs including Design Miami, Scope, and Pulse, prepare to party. Paula E admits she's "addicted to the Vagabond... it never gets old!" Be sure to pop in post-Basel to find "adventure lurking around every corner of this club." At the Viceroy, Talisha M feels as if she is in a whimsical "Alice in Wonderland dream," doubly delightful now that Art Viceroy has popped up! And lastly, a little birdie named Adriana D told us on Talk that she's really looking forward to the annual F*CK Art, Let's Dance party at the Electric Pickle. Shake it, yelpers – it's Basel time!

Best Holiday Dinner Cruises in Miami

There is truly only one company who offers the best holiday dinner cruises in Miami and that's Island Queen Cruises. They always host the most lavish, open to the public holiday dinner cruise on their two flagship yachts, the Biscayne Lady and the Ventian Lady.

This year, they are hosting nightly dinner cruises between Christmas and New Year's Eve for only $75 per adult. This price will include your ticket aboard and unlimited food and drinks from 6:30pm to 7:30pm. Plus, unlike many other cruises in different cities, there are no hidden fees! One price only. Personally, I've taken dinner cruises in San Francisco, Tampa, New York and Portland and this is the best valued cruise. In San Francisco a dinner cruise for my girlfriend and I costed roughly $300 dollars.

Purchase your holiday cruises in Miami

This will truly be the best holiday cruise you will every attend.

Mudras & Holistic Hand Reflexology
Saturday, November 14th
2:30pm - 4:30pm

How much can be revealed from and healed with our hands? After this class, you will never consider your hands the same way.

In our everyday life, we perform many actions with our hands, most of them unconsciously. We open a door, lift a cup, turn the water tap, switch on the car, and brush our teeth, without even thinking about how we move our hands.

Mudras, is the yoga of the hands. Christelle will teach you some specific movements and positions for your hands to activate meridians, or lines of energy. Once activated, these meridians can release headache, or back pain; also they can help you to let go of stress, activate your vital energy and many more purposes.
Our hands reveal much information about our health and our life's path. Christelle will also describe how our physical body is reflected in our hands and how we can auto-massage specific areas to release tensions. Additionally, we will observe the 3 main lines: Life, Love and Mind.

Pricing: $25 in advance / $30 at the door

Switch-Hitter
Switch Bar Opens
switch bar!

Lately you’ve been keeping it real classy. Frequenting underground speakeasies. Wearing a bra.

Perhaps it’s time to Switch things up. Coconut Grove’s newest bar, Switch, is old school (literally, like college).

Trade artisanal cocktails for Pabst on tap. And don’t count on ’97 Chablis. Instead, take solace in sake cocktails and infusions made with pineapple, kiwi, and watermelon. (A full liquor license is expected in January).

A twist on bar fare, the menu offers Spanish and Italian tapas like bruschetta, stuffed peppers, and Serrano and melon, along with traditional burgers and wraps. Get the chef’s specialty, paella, prepared tableside for groups of ten or more.

Expect Hurricanes games on six plasmas, DJs, local bands, and random make-out sessions.

’Cause some things never change.

Period One: “The European Trilogy”

Europa (Zentropa)

(Directed by Lars von Trier/Denmark/1991/112mins.)

With Jean-Marc Barr, Barbara Suvoka, Max von Sydow, Udo Kier

“You will now listen to my voice . . . On the count of ten you will be in Europa . . .” So begins Max von Sydow's opening narration to Lars von Trier's hypnotic Europa (known in the U.S. as Zentropa), a fever dream in which American pacifist Leopold Kessler (Jean-Marc Barr) stumbles into a job as a sleeping-car conductor for the Zentropa railways in a Kafkaesque 1945 postwar Frankfurt. With its gorgeous black-and-white and color imagery and meticulously recreated (if then nightmarishly deconstructed) costumes and sets, Europa is one of the great Danish filmmaker's weirdest and most wonderful works, a runaway-train ride to an oddly futuristic past.

The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet)

(Directed by Ingmar Bergman/Sweden/1957/96 mins.)

With Max von Sydow, Inga Landre, Gunnar Bjornstrand, Bibi Andersson

Much studied, imitated, even parodied, but never outdone, Bergman's stunning allegory of man's search for meaning, The Seventh Seal (Det sjunde inseglet), was one of the benchmark foreign imports of America's 1950s art-house heyday, pushing cinema's boundaries and ushering in a new era of moviegoing. Disillusioned and exhausted after a decade of battling in the Crusades, a knight (Max von Sydow) encounters Death on a desolate beach and challenges him to a fateful game of chess. . .

Breaking the Waves

(Directed by Lars von Trier/Denmark/1996/153mins.)

With Emily Watson, Stellan Skarsgard, Katrin Cartlidge, Jean-Marc Barr

In the back-to-the-basics headset of “Dogma 95” filmmaking (even though not completely complying with the rules and regulations of the movement, and before his true Dogma effort The Idiots) Von Trier created this internationally acclaimed drama.

A shy, religious woman (Emily Watson) sinks into a sea of mental instability and infidelity when her husband is paralyzed from the neck down in this tale set on the torrid shores of Scotland. Because he is no longer able to satisfy her, her husband convinces her to seek out sexual partners, something she is not emotionally equipped to handle.

A Taste of LARS VON TRIER

Period Three: “Post Dogma”

Dancer in the Dark

(Directed by Lars von Trier/Denmark/2000/140mins.)

With Björk, Catherine Deneuve, David Morse, Joel Grey, Jean-Marc Barr

Winner of the Cannes Film Festival Palm d'Or in 2000, Dancer In The Dark once again shows Lars von Trier's refusal to play the same game as everyone else. In a genre-bending move, he creates a heart wrenching story of Selma (played by Björk, who also won Best Actress at Cannes and vowed never to act again after this experience), a Czech immigrant in rural America who is going blind, but finds meaning in life through the fantasy of classic Hollywood musicals. Tragic drama meets sing and dance, in one of the most unusual, original, and artistic musical films ever made.

WINNER: Cannes Film Festival Palm d'Or, Best Actress

Independent Spirit Awards Best Foreign Film

Earth Days

(Documentary directed by Robert Stone/USA/102 mins.)

It is now all the rage in the Age of Al Gore and Obama, but can you remember when everyone in America was not “Going Green”? Visually stunning, vastly entertaining and awe-inspiring, Earth Days looks back to the dawn and development of the modern environmental movement—from its post-war rustlings in the 1950s and the 1962 publication of Rachel Carson's incendiary bestseller Silent Spring, to the first wildly successful 1970 Earth Day celebration and the subsequent firestorm of political action. Earth Days is both a poetic meditation on humanity's complex relationship with nature and an engaging history of the revolutionary achievements—and missed opportunities—of groundbreaking eco-activism.

The film will be introduced and followed by a Q&A with an expert TBA

Paris

(Directed by Cédric Klapisch/France/130mins.)

With Juliette Binoche, Romain Duris, Fabrice Luchini, Mélanie Laurent

Cédric Klapisch gathers together some of the biggest actors in French cinema for a valentine to the city of lights. This rediscovery of his family and observation of the teeming streets outside his window give Pierre hope, and a new sense of how he might spend the time still left to him. ART BASEL WEEKEND 2009

DEC 03 THU 7pm-11pm Reception for the artists

The films and photographs of ALEX NAHON

Alex Nahon is an artist and filmmaker born in Paris, France. During the past ten years, his photos and film-installations were presented in some of the most prestigious art shows in the US and Europe. In addition to his art work, Alex Nahon has written, directed, acted in and produced fiction short-films, documentaries, music videos and commercials. As an actor, he recently played the ex-boyfriend of Academy Award Nominee Julie Delpy in the comedy Two Days in Paris (2007), Delpy's successful directorial debut starring Adam Goldberg. He will come back as 'Manu' in the sequel to come Two Days in New York. He recently directed a Film-Portrait of the Swedish singer Lykke Li, which eventually became a music video for her song 'This Trumpet In My Mind' from her worldly acclaimed debut album 'Youth Novels'. Alex Nahon is currently living in NYC, working on his first feature film as a writer/director, Don't Shoot the Piano Player, based on David Goodis novel.

With the video short compilation: Parts of a Room

BELAXIS BUIL * JEFFREY DELANNOY * MILCHO * DOUGLAS VOISIN

Four artists (each representing a line that completes a box, or in this case a room) were asked to create a video based on their individual concept of space and environment. The artists selected work with video and photography but are deeply influenced by other disciplines such as dance, music, and performance. Each artist was assigned a chapter to the concept. Discussions on details were not to be shared and the end result is a video short compilation that completes a story line.

“The idea of boxes, lines, space and environment and how individuals define these ideas based on their own experiences is intriguing to me as a conceptual visual artist. Although my work might seem restricting and isolating, the initial goal is to communicate to an audience the repercussion of social separation due to our virtual based media world. I am curious to know how this is affecting other artists. Is this state of being causing reflection, introspection, transcending thoughts of self observation within the artist's own space? Or is it making the artist a seeming voyeur, stepping out of their own box as they observe others and manipulate individuals in their work in a crafty approach to evaluate their mental state, creating a virtual reality?”-Belaxis Buil

A Taste of LARS VON TRIER

Period Five: “The Latest Provocation”

Antichrist

(Directed by Lars von Trier/Denmark/2009/109mins.)

With Willem Dafoe and Charlotte Gainsbourg

Lars von Trier's Antichrist was the sensation of the 2009 Cannes Film Festival, the most provocative film in a very provocative year. There was “before-Antichrist” and “after- Antichrist”, and the art film world was turned upside down because of it. Critic's loved it or hated it. And Lars von Trier claimed he was the best filmmaker in the entire world. His film concerns a grieving couple's retreat to 'Eden', their isolated cabin in the woods, where they hope to repair their broken hearts and troubled marriage. But nature takes its course and things go from bad to worse. . .

Due to the provocative nature of this film, under age seventeen is not admitted.

WINNER: Cannes Film Festival Best Actress

"Serious film people on several continents will be talking about von Trier's affront, defending or deriding it, finding it hard to ignore. Short of a flat-out masterpiece, WHAT MORE CAN MOVIES OFFER?"-Time Magazine

Daily Candy- Miami - Choose Your Own Adventure‏

Restaurant Opens

This weekend is filled with tough choices. Rum or gin? Miami City Ballet or New World Symphony?

But the question of where to eat is simple: Prelude by Barton G. (inside the Arsht Center) opens tonight, letting diners pick any three dishes from its $39 prix fixe menu.

Choose seasonal fare from appetizers (tomato and watermelon salad, bacon and corn chowder), entrees (short ribs, wild salmon with asparagus), or infamous Barton G. desserts (a sundae with house-made cinnamon ice cream and roasted caramel apple slices).

Also on offer: a two-course lunch ($23), an enormous by-the-glass wine list (pours come in three sizes), and an a la carte bar menu. The high-ceilinged space woos with two chandeliers resembling incandescent jellyfish and slatted wood banquettes, where you can dine during one of five seatings between 5 and 10:30 p.m.

Your choice.

Prelude by Barton G., at the Adrienne Arsht Center, 1300 Biscayne Boulevard, Performing Arts District (305-357-7900 or preludebybartong.com).
