Matzah, Mitzvah & More--Sunday, April 5

I would love to see you all next Sunday, April 5 for a very special (and very easy) way to make an immediate difference in someone's life. The Matzah, Mitzvah & More project has been one that my family has been involved in for many years. My parents are the co-chairs this year. Please click on the link below for details. If you can just give one hour that day, it would be most appreciated (children are definitely welcome). It is not only the meal that we are delivering, but kindness and compassion as well. For many of these seniors, we will be their only good meal of the week and their only visitors in months. As you all know, charities and social service programs have all taken a tremendous hit. The recipients of these much-needed services are truly bearing the brunt of this hit. I hope you can join me in making the holidays a bit more joyful this year.
Please email me back and let me know if you would like to join me and my family. Feel free to forward this to anyone who might be interested.
Thanks,
Risa

Psycho

(Directed by Alfred Hitchcock/1960)

With Anthony Perkins, Janet Leigh, Vera Miles, John Gavin, Martin Balsam

In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock was perhaps the best-known film director in the world, when he released Psycho and forever changed the shape and tone of the screen thriller. From

its first scene, in which an unmarried couple balances pleasure and guilt in a lunchtime liaison in

a cheap hotel (hardly a common moment in a major studio film in 1960), Psycho announced

that it was taking the audience to places it had never been before, and on that score what followed would hardly disappoint. Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) is unhappy in her job. Impulse takes over and Marion takes off with the company cash, and stops for the night at the Bates Motel, where innkeeper Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) cheerfully mentions that she's the first guest in weeks. “There's hardly a film fan alive who doesn't know what happens next”

“Cine-THEATRE”

Eugene O'Neill's HUGHIE

A One-Act (one hour) play including cinematic supplements!

Starring David Tawil

Also featuring Mark Kroczynski / Directed by Aaron Gonzalez

Multi-Pulitzer Prize winning Playwright Eugene O'Neill wrote the one act play Hughie in 1940, set in the year 1929. . .two years that resound loudly in American history. Hughie is about the American psyche in periods of economic and emotional distress, which is why 2009 is a perfect year to reflect on our current conditions and where they slide into perspective. Small-time gambler Erie Smith lives in a seedy New York hotel, and Hughie, the hotel's clerk is a captive audience for Erie's regular ranting and tall tales. Erie comes home from a night of grief-stricken drinking because Hughie has died. Will there ever be a companionship replacement for one loner seeking solace in another?

The Birds

(Directed by Alfred Hitchcock/1964)

With Tippi Hedren, Rod Taylor, Suzanne Pleshette, Jessica Tandy

The story begins as an innocuous romantic triangle involving wealthy, spoiled Melanie Daniels (Tippi Hedren), handsome Mitch Brenner (Rod Taylor), and schoolteacher Annie Hayworth (Suzanne Pleshette). The human story begins in a San Francisco pet shop and culminates at the home of Mitch's mother (Jessica Tandy) at Bodega Bay, where the characters' sense of security

is slowly eroded by the curious behavior of birds in the area. At first, it's no more than a sea gull swooping down and pecking at Melanie's head. Things take a truly ugly turn when hundreds of birds converge on a children's party. “The birds have run amok, and once the onslaught begins, there's virtually no letup.”

"Blondes make the best victims. They're like virgin snow that shows up the bloody footprints."-Alfred Hitchcock

"Hitch was all about the chase with his blondes. I don't think he ever wanted to-

how will I say? - culminate the chase." -Tippi Hedren

Miles away, Victor is hired by the boss to carry out a job, but makes a disastrous decision to break the sacred law of the crime world and keeps the cash for himself. Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, Miami Int. Film Festival

"Dog Eat Dog" is a very funny film, not in the traditional devices of the one-liner and wisecracks, but in a more subtle language of facial expressions. Torn Curtain

¡MARISOL in Tómbola!

PRESENTED WITH CENTRO CULTURAL ESPANOL

(Directed by Luis Lucia/1962)

Just in time for Gay Pride Weekend and the Miami Latin Gay Film Festival!

Who do you get when you cross Julie Andrews, Haley Mills, and Shirley Temple with Charo, and Jennifer Lopez? MARISOL. . .that's who! Marisol was Spain's colorful answer to wholesome entertainment during the grey General Franco dictatorship. Her young and flamboyant vitality was also a secret symbol of leftie liberation, and that includes, of course, being a gay icon for all the colorful boys (and girls) yearning to be just like her, or yearning to, at least, sing just like her, which brings us to YOU. If you speak or sing or, at least, read Spanish, now is your single rare chance to relive or live for the first time your Spanish heritage and childhood, singing your heart out with MARISOL (on screen) in her classic film Tómbola (which is about. . .um, Marisol being fabulous!).

“Her figure and her grace fill the screen from the beginning till the last sequence, and the feature's festive and sentimental rhythm never declines.” Olé! Olé! Olé!

Someone is supplying castro--and, by extension, Moscow -- with NATO secrets; it is up to Devereaux to liquidate the "mole." Aiding Devereaux is CIA agent Nordstrom (John Forsythe) and aristocratic anti-Castro Cuban Juanita (Karin Dor), who happens to be the girlfriend of pro-castroite Rico Parra (John Vernon).

22 WED 8:30pm: “Cine-IMPROV!”
A LIVE Comedic Jam presented by “the Model Citizens”

Miami's hottest improv actors perform unscripted theater based on your suggestions, in the art of “long form improv," rather than the typical comedy you see at the clubs and on TV. Including film dubbing, the "Armando Diaz Experience," and a live improvised "movie" based on the life experiences of one of our audience members, with stylistic parody, edits, comedic characters, and other scenic devices.

This month's theme: Let's DANCE!

“The Cine-Improv troupe works at a higher level than even the pros you see on Comedy Central, late-night TV, and at clubs. Their improvised take on film removes the middleman and leaves him (rolling) on the cut-up room floor (in this case that's the Miami Beach Cinematheque).”--Greg Baker New Times

Examined Life

Examined Life pulls philosophy out of academic journals and classrooms,

and puts it back on the streets...

Directed by Astra Taylor/Canada/2009

Featuring Cornel West, Peter Singer, Kwarne Anthony Appiah, Michael Hardt, Slavoj Zizek, Judith Butler and Sunaura Taylor

In Examined Life, filmmaker Astra Taylor accompanies some of today's most influential thinkers on a series of unique excursions through places and spaces that hold particular resonance for them and their ideas. Slavoj Zizek questions current beliefs about the environment while sifting through a garbage dump. Judith Butler and a friend stroll through San Francisco's Mission District questioning our culture's fixation on individualism. And while driving through Manhattan, Cornel West—perhaps America's best-known public intellectual—compares philosophy to jazz and blues, reminding us how intense and invigorating a life of the mind can be. Offering privileged moments with great thinkers, Examined Life reveals philosophy's power to transform the way we see the world around us and imagine our place in it.

Wendy and Lucy

Directed by Kelly Reichardt/USA/2009

With Michelle Williams

Wendy Carroll is driving to Ketchikan, Alaska, in hopes of a summer of lucrative work at the Northwestern Fish cannery, and the start of a new life with her dog, Lucy. When her car breaks down in Oregon, however, the thin fabric of her financial situation comes apart, and she confronts a series of increasingly dire economic decisions, with far-ranging repercussions for herself and Lucy. Wendy and Lucy addresses issues of sympathy and generosity at the edges of American life, revealing the limits and depths of people's duty to each other in tough time.

“A PITCH PERFECT TRIUMPH!—Manohla Dargis, New York Times

“What may emerge as THE BEST PERFORMANCE of the YEAR!”—Film Comment

"What will happen to her? The strength of this short, simple, perfect story of a young woman and her dog is that this does not seem, by the end, to be an idle or trivial question. What happens to Wendy -- and to Lucy -- matters a lot, which is to say that Wendy and Lucy, for all its modesty, matters a lot too."--A.O. Scott New York Times

Frenzy

(Directed by Alfred Hitchcock/1972)

With Jon Finch, Barry Foster, Barbara Leigh-Hunt, Anna Massey

Frenzy marked Hitchcock's return not only to England for the first time in twenty years but also to the subject matter with which he'd started his career in thrillers back in 1926 - murder, and a hunt for a serial killer in London. As the latest female victim of the "Necktie Murderer" is found in the Thames, raped and strangled, we meet Richard Blaney (Jon Finch), a bitter, belligerent ex-Royal Air Force officer who can't seem to find his way in life. We also meet his girlfriend, a barmaid (Anna Massey); his ex-wife, a professional matchmaker (Barbara Leigh-Hunt); and his best friend. Their connection to the necktie murders will be clear to us in the first thirty minutes, as Chief Inspector Oxford (Alec McCowan) and his men tighten a circle around the wrong man, who rapidly runs out of options and allies.
"Some of our most exquisite murders have been domestic, performed with tenderness in simple, homey places like the kitchen table."-Alfred Hitchcock

Yelpin' Recession Friendly Restaurants
Sure, the economy is in shambles, but any good yelper knows there's a silver lining to every cloud. Frugal is the new chic, and plenty of local restaurants are helping you stretch those Washingtons by offering recession-friendly options that will still fill your belly right. Hit "print" on this Weekly, 'cause you'll wanna stick this money saver on the fridge for safe keeping!

Brickell, traditionally known for its moneyed yuppie crowd, has some of the best deals in town. Valentina D has a soft spot for the River Oyster Bar and its half-price oyster happy hour: "I loved the opportunity to snarf down a large sampler platter of exquisite bi-valves who gave up their simple yet poignant lives for my momentary enjoyment." On Thursdays, you can manga on pasta at Perricone's for a mere ten spot, but Chelsea O reminds us that the "great atmosphere, outside dining in a barn-like structure, with well-lit trees, twinkle lighting and soft jazz harp in the background" don't cost a thing! Joshua M has his true Blú favorite: "On weekdays from 5-7pm you get an excellent deal in which the price is based off the time of day. If you buy at 5pm the meal is five dollars, if you order at 6pm the meal is six dollars." Yep, timing is everything!

Beat-the-clock specials are also available at Lincoln Road sister eateries Spris and Tiramesu. The former "has the basics down to a science," if you ask Ginger H, while the latter keeps Kim H coming back for their "hearty Italian fare." On Thursdays, look for Eve C sampling the vino e antipasti at Fratelli Lyon's Aperitivo in Milano: "It was all delicious." And then there's Kent K, whose wallet-friendly choice for a more rustic approach to Italian is Café Prima Pasta: "Typically very busy with locals, there is a reason why this place is always popping: the food." Well here's one very yelpy tip: The entire menu is half off if you show up for the 5 or 5:30pm seatings during the week!

Looking for some meatier dining specials? Peep the perks at Bourbon Steak, where Maria T knows "it's chichi von fancy, but sometimes, that's just what you need." With a new Raise Your Spirits happy hour, gourmet Bourbon Bar burger menu and their weekly Bourbon and Blues series, all of a sudden even Michael Mina seems (somewhat) affordable!

Looking for Love?

We are looking for attractive single females (25-40)
Sure there are plenty of fish in the sea -- but what if the right one isn't
swimming in your particular cove?

That's why SOAPnet (ABC Media Productions) is swapping the lives of two
single women to see if a change in locale could change their future. It's a
reality special called "Holidate" -- basically the women temporarily trade
homes, date men in each other's social circles, and stay in touch with one
another on their unique journey to find true love.

ABC MEDIA PRODUCTIONS is NOW CASTING SINGLE WOMEN who are LOOKING FOR LOVE
anywhere but here!!!

Are you a woman age 25 to 40 who is successful in every aspect of life
except one.finding love? You're climbing your way up the corporate ladder,
have your own boutique business, or manage a hip new start-up company. You
just put a down payment on your own condo by the beach, bought that trendy
loft downtown, or maybe even splurged to upgrade to that shiny convertible
you've been eyeing. You play as hard as you work.from the health club to the
nightclubs. You're cute, sexy; maybe even drop dead gorgeous! Yep, you've
got it all.everything except the right guy to share it with.

The men in your life are everywhere. There's that successful co-worker
that's off limits, your brother's gorgeous friend who looks at you as if
you're his little sister, and the guy at the gym that's just not your type.
In fact, they surround you.but for whatever reason none of the guys in your
very crowded pond are your Mr. Right.

You haven't given up hope that he is out there.somewhere...waiting.maybe
even looking for you! If you could only get out of here and go
somewhere.anywhere, you know deep in your heart that a new place filled with new people could change everything.

If you believe there is love out there for you, now is the time to throw
caution to the wind. This is your chance to jump into a different life in a
different part of the country. A romantic holiday completely planned and
organized just for you. We provide the new city, the new digs, the new guys.
even the plane ticket. You just have to believe in love.and get on board!
Please send your age, occupation, contact info and photos

We are looking for attractive single females (25-40) that are likable and have pretty much everything, except Mr. Right. They don't have to be top models or super wealthy, but we are looking for attractive, deserving women with careers or decent occupations (not actresses). Please let me know if you have any questions.

Here are some more details about the villas with some pictures of Sivota and Lefkas in general

Villa Information
At a landscape of hills that surrounds the pretty harbour of Sivota we have just built two identical villas each with their own private pools, situated in an estate of approximately 8000 m2 that includes a private forestry land. The views are unique, unobstructed and breathtaking, since both villas are built on a cliff and at a distance of 100m from the sea and cover the tip of Lefkada and beyond to Ithaca and Kefalonia and the smaller offshore islands at the sea in front. These views can be enjoyed from multiple locations, like the terrace connecting the two villas, the infinity swimming pools and surrounding sitting areas, the living rooms, the master bedrooms and balconies.
The villas lay very close to Sivota harbour, at a walking distance of less than a 1km.
Each villa is approximately 105 m2 and consists of a modern house of 2 floors, built of local stone, bricks, wooden pergolas & traditional ceramic roof. The interior design is minimal & furnished on modern country-style. The top floor has a twin & a double bedroom w/shower room en suite, leading to private balcony & pergola. The main level that is connecting with the top floor through a wooden internal staircase consists of a long open-plan living room w/integral kitchen, a dinning table, WC & a fireplace. The living room is surrounded by wide-open wooden double glassed windows that lead to the infinity swimming pool which is 5.5m x 10m, and a large outside sitting area surrounding the pool. This area is furnished for outdoor living and entertaining and also commands superb views.
The villas are connected between them with a big terrace offering a vast playground and spectacular views
Finally, the villas are extremely luxurious built with great design and state of the art materials, equipment, kitchen appliances, furniture and accessories.
They have redundant central heating systems with additional solar cells, security and fire alarms, full air-conditioning and built in reservoir water tanks.
They are completely independent and private from the other and can be used comfortably at all seasons.

Keep your Hed Up!
Sweeten It Up at Hed Kandi
Blame it on Miami Vice, or maybe it was just serendipity, but as Jan Hammer's 1985 classic theme shot up the charts and into our pop culture psyche, the first-ever Winter Music Conference also came into being. Twenty four years later, the electro-beat still goes on and gets bigger and better each year. Whether you've scored tickets or are still waiting on your shady "hook-up," this week we're bringing you some prime places to dance the night away and still be able to walk into work the next morning.

WMC's life-affirming revelry resonates with thousands, including ten-year vet Sabrina C who has no qualms giving us the lowdown: "With exclusive DJs from around the globe, the entire city dances its ass off for a straight week, and even the hardest of party-goers struggle to keep up by the last Sunday pool party." Follow Marcos R to the National Hotel, "as they're sure to be planning must-see (or be-seen) parties throughout the entire week. The infinity pool is exquisite and leads to the outdoor bar and eventually the beach. Just follow it all the way to Candyland." Sweet!

For a more intimate dance party, 2-step into Set... if you can. Alice S "hearts this place like Angelina Jolie hearts orphans," but warns that it "doesn't let just anyone sashay through its doors." Sound like a hassle? Drea Q has your answer: "Stop in at Indra Lounge. It's got a great ambiance – very sexy and seductive, but is not one of the those foo-foo spots that think they are too cool for everyone." Meanwhile, Elizabeth V suits up for Heathrow: "Exactly what South Beach needed. The type of club you expect to find downtown nestled somewhere within the Design District appealing to the house-lovers and indie kids."

Linette P feels right at home downtown at PS14: "Good drinks, a pool table, inside/outside areas... yup my kinda place." And just in time to partake in the WMC festivities, The Electric Pickle promises to light things up, or at least get you pickled after a few of their Dirty Pickle Martinis! But when the weekend hits, run wild at the enormous, not-to-be-missed, live music extravaganza that is the Ultra Music Festival. With over a hundred artists performing on multiple outdoor stages, it's no wonder Eddy D describes it as "a drum and bass, techno, house, trance Mecca." Lucky for you, there's no pilgrimage necessary!

The space is elegant, somewhat understated, and always welcoming. It is the antidote to South Beach's intellectual vacuity and a haven for devoted cinephiles. But quiet simply, it is just a great place to watch any movie, or to discover more experimental and off-the-radar films...".

MBC March Photography exhibition:

“GARTEL: Electronica Erotica 1979-2009”

Legendary digital art and photography pioneer Laurence GARTEL, "The father of digital art”, has exhibited work around the world for over 30 years in such institutions as MoMa, the Whitney Payson Museum, the Smithsonian Institute's Museum of American History. Alongside colleagues and fellow pioneers Keith Haring, Nam June Paik, Andy Warhol, (who Gartel taught how to use the now vintage Amiga Computer), and Robert Mapplethorpe (who he exhibited with in 1982), Gartel was instrumental in capturing America's cultural fascinations in digital format, for the first time ever (illustrated, for example, in the first ever digital photograph for the Absolut vodka campaign, ABSOLUT GARTEL, circa 1991). MBC pays tribute to GARTEL in March, with an exhibition of his work focusing on his theme of erotica throughout his career, “Electronica Erotica 1979-2009”, which will be highlighted by an evening of his digital films for the second installment of the MBC series “Cine-Kink” on Wednesday, March 25, with “interactive activities included”. In the meantime, experience his vintage unconventional digital works on paper at MBC from March 05-March 31.

A Music Conference “Cine-Kink”

An MBC series for mature audiences (only).

GARTEL: Electronica Erotica 1979-2009

MBC's “Cine-Kink” night, the semi-monthly tribute to the artistic side of kinky subjects,

brings you "GARTEL: Electronica Erotica 1979-2009”, erotic works set to electronic music by the "Father of Digital Art” Laurence Gartel. Join us for a screening of Gartel's multimedia video/animation works along with the March MBC exhibition of “Electronica Erotica” works

on paper, as well as a book and dvd signing. Gartel's digital films will be paired with the showcase of early nudes made with crude analog computer systems from the 1970s until today. His theme of fetish and erotica has been a thread through much of his life's work. The visceral energy and impact of voltage control over color, form, and content makes GARTEL a "genuine original article" moving the world into the Electronic Art aesthetic, all set to electronic music for Miami Music Conference!

Also included in your GARTEL experience is a live “Hooded DJ On A Leash” performance, interactive “Saran Wrapping”, and much more!

Be prepared if you wish to play! Got Fetish-Wear?

With Wyatt Cenac, Tracey Heggins

Dog Eat Dog (Perro come perro)

Directed by Carlos Moreno/Colombia/2008

With Eusebio Benitez, Oscar Borda

Dog Eat Dog, a tale of double-crosses and retribution is Colombia's official entry to the Academy Awards for Best Foreign-Language Film. El Orejon is an agoraphobic crime boss who lives surrounded by telescopes in a luxury high-rise apartment in the center of Cali, Colombia. When his godson is killed he asks a voodoo priestess to avenge the murder by casting a deadly spell on the shooter, Eusebio. Miles away, Victor is hired by the boss to carry out a job, but makes a disastrous decision to break the sacred law of the crime world and keeps the cash for himself. As the stash of money passes from hand to hand, who will have the wits to be the last one standing?

WINNER: Gramado Film Festival Best Director, Best Actor, Best Cinematography

Guadalajara Mexican Film Festival Best Actor

Official Selection: Sundance Film Festival, Miami Int. Film Festival

"Dog Eat Dog" is a very funny film, not in the traditional devices of the one-liner and wisecracks, but in a more subtle language of facial expressions. The slow but confident pace, which is engaging and tense, is unusual in a film of its type and gives lie to just how boring the frantic editing of recent thrillers has become.”-Quiet Earth

Trends 2009 will present more that fifteen Contemporary Latin American Contemporary artists. A talented group composed by a mix of y oung and emergent voices as well as mid-career creators who have transformed the Latin American art scene. They focus on cultural politics and hot issues of contemporary times. Through drawings, paintings, objects, installations, digital photographs, videos and performances, they propose politically charged works with a new visual vocabulary away from traditional practices and fossilized academicism. They propose new icons, new subjectivities and personal mythologies that reflect their concern on societal and cultural ordeals nowadays.
Trends’ works juxtapose multiple narratives and intercrosses ideological standpoints, crystallizing and mirroring world critical issues. It incorporates ephemeral elements, memorabilia, discarded objects, imposing new methods and techniques that dislocates traditional exposure, and forces the public to perceive the art from new angles of vision.
Contemporary Latin American Art is no longer a peripheral art enclosed in a territorial microcosm, restrained to tight borders or simple geographies. Contemporary Latin American art reveals itself concisely strong and vividly rooted in the global hemisphere competing in the world art arena.

They are Aisen Chacin, Alvaro Garcia-Ordonez, Barbara Barreiro, Belaxis Buil, Carlos Tirado, Ena Marrero, Evelyn Valdirio, Grimanesa Amoros, Liliam Dominguez, Mariano Costa Peuser, Nestor Arenas, Pablo Contrisciani, Pacaso Frank Chinea, Patricia Gil, Rosario Bond, Ruben Ubiera and Sergio Garcia.
