restaurant rec

Dear Foodie Friends;

I just had to tell you all about a truly outstanding meal. Even though Francesco's opened its doors in 2002, this was the first time I had ever heard about it. No surprise, since it's rare when most of us venture out of the 33139, specially for a neighborhood restaurant without the celebrity chef or fine decor and chic ambiance that our palates have been lulled by. But my dear friends, if your palates need a wake up call then you must visit Francesco.

Late on a Tuesday evening I walked in to a packed house at this quaint and tiny Coral Gables restaurant while a viola player who would have been cheesy in any other setting, set a mellow and warm mood with Andean classics. Though Francesco's is not fancy by any means, they have a well managed restaurant with excellent service and a fantastic menu of traditional Peruvian fare with a touch of haute cuisine. Though there is something in the menu for everyone, your choices will be limited unless you are a true seafood lover.

We decided to start our dinner with Francesco's signature Corvina (chilean sea bass) Ceviche served in a trio of sauces, and garnished with onions, Choclo, and Peruvian yams to balance your palate. My favorite was by far the Ceviche in the spicy yellow pepper sauce. Don't expect your ceviche to be rare, as you have come to expect in cross-over fare. This is traditionally made, marinated in lime just long enough for it to develop a little texture. Another great treat was the Papas a la Huacaina appetizer, made with tiny yellow Peruvian potatos in a yellow pepper and goat cheese sauce. To say they melt in your mouth would not go far enough, they are much creamier than the best made gnocci. For me the coup was my entree, a perfectly light and creamy artichoke rissotto with seared scallops seasoned to perfection.

Not surprisingly, Francesco's has received top Zagat ratings nearly every year since it opened its doors. I would say that Francesco's is best for small groups, and definitely a great dinner date spot. It's not trendy or chic, but it is warm, charming, and very conducive to enjoying conversation over a great meal. You should definitely try it some time soon - it's worth the drive, and I am sure you won't be disappointed.

Cheers to all;

Catherine Roman

From Genart - Music Nation Is Taking You to Sundance!‏

Win a Trip to Sundance!
Music Nation wants to see how your life is powered by song.
We've been buddies with the Music Nation kids for a while. Why? Because they're kindred spirits; they provide a platform for fledgling artists to gain exposure, tools for bands to reach new fans and possible support structures, a place for music lovers to discover talent, and competitions with kick ass prizes.

And their new My Life Is Go! video contest, that we're helping judge, is no exception. All you have to do is turn your camera on and capture a short video clip or still image that illustrates how music affects your daily life. Maybe it's you dancing around in your undies to Morningwood. Or climbing a mountain with White Stripes blaring on your iPod. Or lip syncing Lily Allen on your daily commute to work. Regardless of how music fits into your day-to-day, we want to see why you're so passionate about it.

What's in it for you? The grand prize for best video (based on creativity, concept, execution and entertainment value), is a VIP trip to Sundance, which will include round trip airfare for two, two nights of lodging, ground transport and access to some of the festival's hottest parties (look for us at the SKY360 by Delta Lounge on Main Street). Yeah, we thought you'd be stoked. The deadline to enter is December 3rd, so get out there and start rocking out ASAP!

Crossing Cultural Frontiers
Friday
November 30 at 8 p.m.

Join these innovative composers in journeys from one country, and one culture, to another. Greek-French-Romanian composer Iannis Xenakis explores the Persephone myth by taking six percussionists where they've never performed before: inside and around the audience. Argentine native Alejandro Viñao designs pulsating rhythms with twists and turns in his homage to an experimentalist American composer. U.S. expatriate George Antheil called himself the "bad boy of music," and with good reason. Originally scored for 16 player pianos, percussion and airplane propellers, his Ballet mécanique caused fistfights at its European premiere. This performance by the New World Symphony Percussion Consort of Ballet mécanique is presented in conjunction with The Wolfsonian-FIU. Michael Linville (pictured) conducts. Tickets are $10.

Faces of Adversity

The Steve Martin Studio features a variety of eclectic contemporary art, and this holiday season South Florida artist Steve Martin is showing his latest series, Faces of Adversity.

The Series of original paintings in oil and acrylic are an extension of combined elements from previous works of Martin's dealing with the building of non-representational portraits of characters created from exaggerated features and bold blocks of color to express emotion rather than realism. Representing a style known as figurative expressionism, Martin's paintings are created by arbitrarily laying down pure bold color in broad and vigorous brush strokes. It's the perfect gift for the discriminating art lover.

The Steve Martin Studio is located at 66 NE 40th Street in Miami. 305-576-9221.

Caetano Veloso at Carnival Center 11/24

Presented with support from Moleca Cachaca and Baptist Health International Center of Miami

"A great chapter in the always-surprising later career of Caetano Veloso -- [Ce is] a record that's unlike anything else he's recorded before! The album mostly features small combo backing, set up alongside Veloso's vocals in styles that are slightly punky, slightly arty -- in a way that reminds us a fair bit of work from the hippest side of the New York scene in the early 80s. The structure of the songs is often simple, but extremely fresh -- very inventive twists and turns of a few basic elements, all to match the poetry of Veloso's own lyrics." - Dusty Groove

Caetano Veloso’s cê was released by Nonesuch Records earlier this year to critical and popular success both inside and out of Brazil. The record includes twelve original songs by Veloso (vocals, nylon and steel guitars), who recorded them in the spring/summer of 2006 with a rock band of younger musicians: Pedro Sá (electric guitar), Ricardo Dias Gomes (bass, Rhodes piano), and Marcelo Callado (drums); it was produced by Sá and Caetano's son Moreno Veloso.

“Caetano Veloso is one of the greatest songwriters of the century: a master melodist, a lyricist who merges surreal imagery with a sense of history and a sense of humor, a singer whose voice radiates tenderness and supple swing and a musician who connects to traditional music, pop and jazz from all over.” —The New York Times

Veloso is among the most influential and beloved artists to emerge from Brazil. Known there since the 1960’s, Veloso has made more than thirty recordings to date and has developed a strong international following. Born in Santo Amaro, Bahia, in 1942, Caetano Veloso began his professional musical career in 1965 in Sao Paulo. In his first compositions he drew on the bossa novas of Joao Gilberto, but rapidly began to develop his own distinctive style. Absorbing musical and aesthetic ideas from sources as diverse as The Beatles, concrete poetry, the French Dadaists and the Brazilian modernist poets of the 1920s, Caetano, together with Gilberto Gil, Gal Costa, his sister Maria Bethania, and a number of other poets and intellectuals, founded a movement called Tropicalismo. By experimenting with new sounds and words, adding electric guitars to their bands and utilizing the imagery of modern poetry, Caetano became a musical revolutionary.

This short-lived movement, founded in 1968, ended abruptly when Caetano and Gil were sent into exile and lived in London. Now universally credited with redefining what is known as Brazilian music, it laid the groundwork for a renaissance of Brazilian popular music both at home and abroad. Caetano and Gil returned to Brazil in 1972 and found that Tropicalismo had remained intact and their audience had continued to grow.

Although Tropicalismo set the tone for Caetano’s career, his music has evolved greatly over the years. Incorporating elements of rock, reggae, fado, tango, samba canao, baiao and rap-- with lyrics containing some of the best poetry in a musical tradition rich in verse-- Caetano’s music is sometimes traditional, sometimes contemporary, often hybrid. At once an astute social commentator and balladeer of highly emotive love songs, Caetano is one of the most respected poets in the Portuguese language. Indeed he is one of only a handful of artists who has resolved how to be musically modern and still undeniably Brazilian.

Miami City Ballet opens its season in Palm Beach County with one of the most glamorous ballets ever created, "Jewels," choreographed by George Balanchine. The three-act ballet is set to music by three different composers: "Emeralds," distinctly French, with music by Gabriel Fauré; "Rubies," jazzy and American, set to Igor Stravinsky; and "Diamonds," imperial Russian, danced to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky. The ballet was inspired by a jewelry collection at Van Cleef and Arpels in New York that piqued Balanchine's imagination. Performances are Fri at 8 p.m., Sat at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sun at 1 p.m. Individual tickets range from $19 to $75, and 4-program and 2-program subscriptions are also available.
