As an Executive Committee member of Friends of the New World Symphony (“Friends”), I would like to invite you to join Friends for the 2007-2008 Season, which is the 20th anniversary of the NWS. You can access the Friends’ brochure at:

Friends is Miami's premiere cultural group supporting the arts. For $250 (all of which goes directly to the support the NWS Fellows and $125 of which is tax deductible), you and a guest will be entitled to attend numerous events at exclusive venues, and witness a showcase of the fusion of classical music with electronic beats, hip hop, and rock with nationally recognized DJ’s spinning alongside (a list of scheduled events is below). Members have access to nine private events each Season, with parties and performances in both Miami and New York City.
Our Season Launch party is November 10, 2007 at the Hotel Victor and is sponsored by Miami Modern Luxury Magazine. It starts at 8. Please note you must be a member of NWS to attend the event. (Or if you want to come once and learn more about NWS prior to joining, please let me know.)

Target Globalbeat November 10 2007
Target is bringing Globalbeat (the free daylong world music showcase it did when the Carnival Center opened) one Saturday a month. The first one is this Saturday...I am not sure what my story for this weekend is between book fair and 5 visitors in town, but will try to get to it.

Fushu Daiko

Japanese taiko drumming requires such force and control that watching the musicians play is like watching dancers perform. The name Fushu Daiko means "Florida taiko group," and this group has become a fixture in Asian cultural festivals throughout South Florida. Their strong and breathtaking beats have made them a local favorite.

Rara Lakay
3:30 - 4 p.m.
Rara Lakay is a Haitian parade band made up of singers, drummers, and musicians. Rara music comes from a very old tradition that features unusual instruments such as bamboo trumpets and konè (trumpets made of sheet metal). With instruments unique to Haiti and a bright festive sound, Rara Lakay intrigues and delights.

La Gran Banda
4 - 5:15 p.m.
La Gran Banda plays papayera music, typical of the north Atlantic coast of Colombia. Mixing the sounds of a municipal-style brass band with Afro-Colombian rhythms and percussive instruments, papayera bands are specialists in up-tempo dance music. Playing styles like cumbia, fandango, porro and paseo, La Gran Banda will get your feet moving with their infectious sound.
The Lee Boys

The Lee Boys are one of America's finest sacred steel ensembles, playing a style of gospel music featuring the steel guitar and a hard-driving, blues-based beat. This family group began making music at the ages of 7 and 8 in their church in Perrine, FL. Since then, they've performed their joyous, spiritual sound for enthusiastic audiences throughout the United States, Canada and Europe.

The ensemble incorporates corporeal mime, European clowning, commedia, street theater and burlesque to create dynamic performances that are wild, intense, fantastical and outrageously funny.
