Andy Garcia may be known to most of the world as a Hollywood actor (he's currently helping to light up Ocean's 13), but in the Miami Cuban community, he's just as well known as a fan and supporter of Cuban music.
The movie star helped engineer master bass player Cachao's comeback in the early 1990s and has produced a number of the elderly maestro's albums; he was executive producer of HBO's 2000 biopic of expatriate Cuban trumpet-player Arturo Sandoval and also portrayed the renowned jazz musician.
Garcia, who plays piano and congas and has sat in on a number of recording sessions, will play congas with Sandoval and friends Sunday at the Arturo Sandoval Jazz Club at the Deauville Beach Resort, 6701 Collins Ave., Miami Beach.
Demand has been so high, however, that they've moved the show to the hotel's Le Jardin room. Must be a thrill for Garcia, who as a teenager in Miami Beach used to hang around the back doors of jazz clubs trying to hear the music. Doors open at 5 p.m.; show starts at 7:30 p.m. Tickets are $40. Call 305-403-7565 or go to www.arturosandovaljazzclub.com.
