Art in the Public Realm:
Defining Miami Dade's Civic Spaces
August 6, 2009
4:00-6:00pm
Gallery Diet
147 NW 23rd Street Miami, FL 33127
Interested in learning more about how to get public art commissions?
Miami-Dade Art in Public Places program implements site-specific art installations in civic areas at various sites throughout Miami, including Adrienne Arsht Center for the Performing Arts, fire and police stations, Port of Miami, libraries, parks, Miami International Airport, public housing developments, Metrorail and Metromover stations, and community health centers. These collaborative, innovative projects involve the thinking of artists, architects, engineers, historians, and landscape architects.
Brandi Reddick, Artists and Communications Manager for Art in Public Places, coordinates the program's management of artists and communications, from advisory committee and artist orientation meetings to project publicity and publications. Please join LegalArt as Brandi discusses the highlights of the Miami-Dade Art in Public Places Collection, the Call to Artists Process, and an overview of upcoming opportunities for artists, including the new Miami Marlins Stadium, which will generate $5.5 million in public art commissions. Following the presentation Brandi will answer questions. Stick around to meet other artists and community leaders--SeminArts are great networking opportunities!

Navigating Through Complexity: How to Achieve Success with Online Travel Marketing in Seven Easy Steps
Just as most consumers need help making their travel plans, marketers in this non-linear, fast-changing world of interactive marketing need a guide through the dizzying maze of Web 2.0 trends and numbers.
eMarketer founder and CEO Geoff Ramsey, acting as your tour guide, will walk you through the strategies, tactics and best practices for engaging with consumers and leading them through the buying cycle using an array of digital marketing tools.
In his usual caffeine-induced style, Geoff will layout the landscape and help you figure out:
*What is the new mindset marketers need to have in order to connect with consumers today?
*Which online ad formats are growing the fastest, and why? (Hint: it's not all about search!)
*What's the secret sauce for using social media without getting your brand in trouble?
*How is online video being used by leading marketers, and how can you apply that learning to your brand?
Is Twitter a fad, or am I missing the boat if my brand is tweeting to the world?

We're all too familiar with the dating dance, but since the season of summer lovin' is fully ablaze, it's time again to take a crack at romance. Yelp isn't a dating site, but we're happy to provide some heart-felt suggestions for those looking to find love, heat things up, or even power through a recent break-up.
The revamped Clevelander – with 9 bars inside and out (and miniclub1020 Music Boxx on the 2nd floor!) – could be your one-stop sexy people spotting experience. Or put a little love in your art at either Second Saturdays or Viernes Culturales. Take it from Whitney R, who assures "wandering the streets with cups of wine is never a bad time," and Robert C, who ponders, "Cigars, art, good-looking women, guayaberas, and loud Cuban music – what else do you need?"
Already found your media naranja, but looking to make some extra sweet memories? Ivonne-Marie C's "little piece of paradise" is Española Way, where couples stroll down the dimly-lit, cobblestone street taking in the charming cafés and bohemian shops. Over on Talk, Jorge R's reveals his sexy secret locale is the bay-front spot just at the end of the Venetian Causeway -- to get your amor in the mood for lovin', simply "sit by the water, relax, and take in" panoramic views of Miami's skyline. Want to get more wet? How about a moonlight sail on Biscayne Bay?
Of course who amongst us hasn't felt the sting of a broken heart? Try letting your emotions run wild at new gym, Knockout Zone's Just Pain class. Whatever doesn't kill you makes you stronger, right? Tough cookie Patty J gets pumped up thanks to high-energy tunes and inspirational trainers at South Florida Boxing. But when you've truly hit rock bottom, climb your way back to the top at X-treme. Denise P recs it "to anyone that wants to challenge their body and do something different." One small climb for you, one giant boost for your ego. And if that doesn't do it for you, just remember: as long as there are lapdances, there's always hope.

In Miami, we know it just needs to get some work done.
So with a significant nip/tuck, may we re-present Don Chile, a new(ish) Mexican joint on Ponce de Leon opening tomorrow.
Sure, there used to be a resto of the same name in the same space, but the reinvention has a new look, a new chef, and new owners. Toque Erubiel Gutierrez was born in Campeche, Mexico, and intends to keep the fare authentic. Snack on favorites like fajitas, burritos, tacos, and quesadillas. Then chase the spice with a Michelada, margarita, or Mexican soda.
The space eschews mega-mall restaurant looks for cozy decor (billowing curtains, warm lighting, dark wood floors). And adorning the walls: large Aztec masks.
Giving it a face-lift.
Don Chile, 1915 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Coral Gables (305-461-1566).

Clean out your closet for Fashionably Conscious!
This September, Coconut Grove Cares will be hosting the third annual Fashionably Conscious to benefit The Barnyard Community Center. Fashionably Conscious is fashion fundraising sale, offering donated luxury-brand clothing and accessories from the most coveted closets in Miami. The host committee has already donated designer items from Chanel to Dior, Prada, Miu Miu, and more. 100 percent of the proceeds go directly to The Barnyard, which offers free after-school and summer programming and is a much-needed safe haven for over 250 children in the West Grove. Last year, Fashionably Conscious netted $20,000, but with your help, we’re hoping to double that this year.
This is where you come in! Join us by cleaning out your closet this summer.
Support The Barnyard by giving away that gown that has already made appearances at a few events or that old designer purse you haven’t used in years. A donation that raises $200 will buy school supplies for 10 children for a whole year!
What do you get in return?
Tax deduction on your donations
Free admission to the Fashionably Conscious VIP Preview Sale and Cocktail Party on September 18th at Mary Brickell Village
A great reason to go shopping and fill up your closet again!
Please help us spread the word and forward this email to your friends, family, and colleagues. The deadline to donate items is August 27, 2009.
Our Host Committee this year includes:
Sarah Arison, Ynoluz Bacalao, Maria Eugenia Baco, Suzy Buckley, Alicia Cevera, Margarita Codina, Lourdes Jofre-Collett, Karla Dascal, Ana Cristina Defortuna, Desiree Dubon, Jolie Souto Dueñas, Raysa Fanjul, Laura Garcia, Aida Levitan, Natasha & Lena Lowell, Mariana Martinez Menocal, Dede Moss, Daisy Oliveira, Darlene Perez, Amy Zakarin, and Judy Zeder
Please contact me at lizagwalton @ gmail.com to arrange a date and time to pick up your donation.
For questions regarding the sale and sponsorships, please email the Executive Committee at fashionablyconscious @ gmail.com.
Sincerely,
Liza Gallardo Walton

Casting Calls
Casting Call: FOX is conducting a worldwide open call online to cast two characters for its upcoming 2010 comedy, Sons of Tucson. The plot is about a charming con man named Ron who is hired by three brothers to act as their father while their real one is serving prison time for a white collar crime. Specifically, FOX is looking to cast two of the brothers. Kids and teens, with or without acting experience are invited to upload their audition videos online through July 24 at http://www.sonsoftucsonopencall.com . The show's Los Angeles-based casting directors will review each audition video and contact those they are interested in. Details on the two brother characters "Robby" and "Brandon" are as follows:
Robby - (8 years old) is the youngest Gunderson sibling. He's an impish and impulsive grade-schooler who needs Ron to bail him out when he accidently starts a fire at the back-to-school fair. It's partially for this reason that the Gundersons hire Ron full-time to pose as their dad.
Brandon - (13-15 years old) is the oldest of the Gunderson boys. He views life and the family's current situation through a somewhat warped lens. Energetic and upbeat, his eccentricity is charming at times, but his efforts to help his brothers often land them in hot water. He possesses terrific self confidence that is completely unearned.

Are You Getting in the Way of Your Success?
Are You Getting in the Way of Your Success?
Step aside and let success find you. Sounds easy, doesn't it? Often, the biggest roadblock to your success is you. As much as we would like to point to something or someone else for our failure and inability to achieve our most cherished goals, at the end of the day there is really only one place to look if you want to break free and create your best life now.
When you are blaming people or circumstances outside yourself, you become a victim, powerless to make changes that will improve your life. Taking responsibility for your success puts you in the driver's seat where you can then take action from an empowered position.
Karen is an excellent example of someone standing in the way of her own success. A talented, successful pharmaceutical sales professional with over 10 years of experience, Karen had career aspirations that were going unrealized. Her dream had always been to open her own spa, but the dream had faded as she worked to climb the career ladder and sustain the lifestyle she had created. Old, worn out, limiting beliefs were holding Karen back from creating a life she truly loved.
By the time Karen called me to coach with her, things were rapidly changing in her world. She was losing her job due to downsizing and was concerned about finding another position. Fear was holding her back from moving forward. Blaming the company, the economy and other outside factors for her situation only held her captive and unable to take focused action.
We began with the steps outlined below to support Karen in creating an inspiring future. Rather than remain stuck, we put together a strategy to get into action and make powerful change to move forward.
Here are ideas for getting out of your own way:
1. Take responsibility for your life. Decide that you will take charge of your future and stop blaming outside circumstances. You are the only one who can change your outcomes.
2. Be present in the present moment. Rather than fretting about what is past or worrying about what may happen in the future, focus on being in the present moment and take full advantage of it.
3. Do your best and let it be. Stop overanalyzing your performance and constantly criticizing yourself for not having done better. Trust that you are doing the best you can and acknowledge yourself for that.
4. Express gratitude. Stop focusing on what you lack and be appreciative for what you have. What you appreciate appreciates.

Client Success
““I knew that I needed to have someone in my corner for that extra nudge, but Pat and Smooth Sailing took it to another level and without being pushy or self-serving. What I wanted to get out of the program was better time management and more directional business methods to help me take that extra leap into an executive level. Though I know that staying on this path will always take personal attention and dedication, the exercises we have practiced and new ideas have opened up doors easier in the last few weeks than what I ever anticipated. Pat made me see through the clouded mirror and helped with the focus on my career. I look forward to working with her again both personally and with my colleagues at Turner Construction. The methods she uses are dynamic and regardless of personality, help in any business circumstance.” Amy Jennings, Turner Construction Company Welcome to our readers in 18 countries!

Say Cheese!
Casale Pizzeria-Mozzarella Bar Opens
There’s bad cheesy: acrylic nails, Ed Hardy hats, Wes from The Bachelorette (argh!).
And good cheesy: Taleggio, pecorino, burrata.
Making a strong showing in the latter category, Casale Pizzeria-Mozzarella Bar, opening today on South Beach.
From the owner of Sardinia, the resto serves mozzarella (burrata, bufala) made on-site by an Italian import (seriously, they flew a guy over). Pair it with antipasto like prosciutto or roasted peppers.
The thin-crust pies are cooked in a wood-burning oven and topped with high-quality ingredients like truffle pecorino and wild boar sausage. There’s a raw bar, cocktails made with fresh fruit, and a 100 percent Italian wine list — by the glass, quartino, or bottle.
There’s also a second-story outdoor lounge and a small shop with imported delicacies like olive oil and marinara.
If you’re feeling saucy.

Michelle C felt she'd "stumbled on to a real secret" at organic Italian eatery Escopazzo, while Jennifer W found her happy ending with the dulce de leche at La Cofradia. She warns us to use caution, though, as indulging in this treat may induce "a diabetic coma." Perhaps some things are just worth the risk.
Calling all pescatarians! Surf's up at AltaMar. Preston C considers their grouper ravioli with butter sage sauce to be "out of this world," but their mackerel does it for him as well. Lucky you, they're both on offer! Dan B raves about the unique style of ceviche at Jaguar and during Yelp Eats, diners will be able to create their very own own fishy trio. Like it raw(er)? At Red Koi, Christie P succumbs to the Santini roll (shrimp tempura, crab, avocado, cream cheese, masago, salmon & tempura flakes on top, eel sauce, spicy mayo!) and Thai donuts. Another sensAsianal option is Café Sambal inside the Mandarin Oriental. Melissa S enjoyed the "light and fresh chicken pad thai," assuring us its "one of the best" she's ever had.
Franky A's perfect date spot is Casa Toscana, "with its cozy at-home atmosphere and excellent made from scratch food." Feel like painting the town red? Why not start off with some certified Angus beef prime sirloin steak at Red, The Steakhouse. Upon seeing Pacific Time's Yelp Eats menu Ramon C, summed up their hot and sour popcorn shrimp appetizer as "fully sick." That's one sure fire way to get a dinner party started quickly! Looking to end your night on a hot and sweet note? The only thing stopping you from the delicious decadence that is Graziano's caramel-filled crepes flambé is booking that table on Yelp Eats!

The Oscar Project
The Oscar Project is a local non-profit that I started last year in response to the tragic, drowning death of a 23-month old boy in Coconut Grove. The Oscar Project is endorsed and sponsored by Miami Children’s Hospital and we are currently finalizing an endorsement and partnership with the American Red Cross.
Since our first workshop, held on March 29, 2008, we have successfully trained and educated over 350 families and nannies in infant and child CPR, choking maneuvers for infants and children, injury prevention in the home and garden, first aid and basic childcare, pool and water safety, kitchen and bathroom safety, outdoor safety, poison control, fire safety and emergency management. We also hold held mini-workshops and CPR training classes that have touched over 2,500 people.
The goal of The Oscar Project is to educate and empower families and child caretakers so that they have the skills, tools and knowledge to prevent accidents and accidental deaths involving the children in their care. We also train and educate parents and child caregivers so that they know how to respond in the event of a crisis or emergency. The Oscar Project holds weekly 7-hour workshops in Spanish and English-language workshops upon request. While we work to save children’s lives, we are also empowering a group of people (primarily Latin American women) who often do not have a voice or vote in this country. We give them the tools and skills to find employment (or better, more lucrative employment) and assist them, when possible, in finding jobs.
Although we have a schedule of classes for the remainder of the year, The Oscar Project welcomes the opportunity to work on a private basis, providing a class or series of classes in private residences, community centers, schools, temples or churches. Our classes are available in English and Spanish and we are available weekdays and weekends.
Please forward this information on our program to those in your network. I would be most grateful.
Kindest regards,
Susan.

DailyCandy Miami - A Place in the Sun
A Place in the Sun
Road Trip to Fort Lauderdale
It’s hot, muggy, and doesn’t stop raining. So make like everyone else and head north for the summer — to sunny Fort Lauderdale. It feels just like a vacation (you’re in a hotel!), but it’s less than an hour’s drive.
Dog Days of Summer
You know who else likes road trips? Your dog. Lucky for you, Il Lugano is pet friendly. The hotel even presents pooches with peanut butter treats baked by da Campo Osteria’s pastry chef. Also welcoming Fluffy, the new W Hotel. Check in and then check out at Bliss Spa: Stellar massages come with a paraffin foot treatment. Ask for Jorge (trust us).
Hot Plate
Carnivores will rejoice at Steak 954, while their vegetarian counterparts can take comfort at Sublime. The pretty resto serves natural and organic fare that lives up to its name. Or compromise at the waterside Italian bistro Serafina. The intimate space is ideal for a romantic dinner a deux. For lunch, brave the line at Gran Forno Bakery.

Not sure where your wanderlust will take you? With Visa, you’re limited by only your imagination. From gas and greasy spoons to hotels, motels, and rest stops, it’s got you covered in more places. (Still, a little GPS never hurts.)
Shop It Like It’s Hot
Las Olas Beauty, the spa-cum-apothecary, has everything from Malin+Goetz to Mario Badescu. Shop 20th-century furniture (think Karl Springer tables and Artifort chairs) at downtown’s Space Modern. For vintage garb, there’s Jezebel: Find Victorian-era hats next to Paul Frank tees. And Pinkghost has the kitsch factor with vinyl toys, posters, figurines, and books.
Midnight Sun
No, everything does not close at 9 p.m. Culture Room consistently books top-quality indie bands (the estimable Cat Power plays Monday). The aptly named Dive Bar also brings in great acts, or DIY during Monday-night karaoke. Newish megaclub Exit 66 is a whopping 20,000 square feet broken up into five rooms, complete with pool tables and a gold-and-diamond-covered bar.
You can beat the heat.

Holy shitaake! So many Japanese joints, so little time... yet only the freshest fish and most potent wasabi will ensure a rawkin' good time. Lucky for you, we've separated the 305's lightweights from the sumo-worthy championship contenders. So grab some sake and a Sapporo, 'cause this insider's guide to Japanese eats is the BOMB!
Not one to be lost in translation, Mike S heads to Matsuri, where "there are secret items on the Japanese menu, so work on your kanji! Sorry gaijins..." Jennifer W takes it a step further and goes sans menu at Sushi Ko, where her favorite sushi chef "flexes his creative muscles and comes up with amazing dishes," some of which (sushi sandwich, anyone?) land on the regular menu by popular demand. Su Shin Izakaya is somewhat infamous for its chef, Chika, happily shouting at every customer. Eschel H, however, focuses on their tapas-style "wall with 10-20 custom appetizers, daily specials, and desserts." Small packs a massive punch!
Proving that you can get quality sushi when rollin' in the suburbs, Akashi is home to the much yelped about Alex #2: heavenly bites of shrimp tempura, crab salad, masago, and cream cheese, topped with avocado, spicy mayo, eel sauce, and crunch. Christie P asks for "extra tempura flakes and extra eel sauce... it's like dessert meets main dish." For "melt in your mouth toro and outstanding uni," Cristina O sinks her chopsticks into Japanese Market. As for Effie C, well she revels in the "soft lighting, exposed wooden beams, and vintage Japanese décor" at Shibui. Look for her perched in "the cozy loft where you can enjoy your outrageously fresh, tasty sushi sitting on floor cushions. It's no wonder this place has been in business since back in the day before sushi was hip." We think that was during the Nixon administration.
Greg A tells us that Hiro's Yakko San plays it straight with authentic dishes like their signature crispy bok choy, and advises not to "come here looking to have a Dragon Roll. What you can expect here is bona fide Japanese food." Domo arigato, Greg! If you're looking for food as art, Rob C paints a tasty picture of Naoe: "It does take a certain palate sophistication to appreciate this place." Even better, they serve it up "omakase style – the nigiri will continue until you cry uncle or you've eaten everything in the restaurant." Ah yes, and this will surely beg the question, is that a maki in your belly, or are you just happy sashimi...?

JAMAICAN ME MANGO on July 10
This is another terrific event that has an absolute cap on the number of people. The last one hit maximum capacity within a few hours and many of you ended up disappointed that I couldn’t pull strings to get you on the list. So, don’t drag your feet and miss out again. Get your tickets online at www.fairchildpalms.org. It’s going to be a lot of fun. John
P.S. You can stay in the loop by joining the “Fairchild Palms” group on Facebook. We also have a separate profile on FB that you can add as a friend, which provides some greater flexibility for sharing updates, photos, etc.

Whether it's treating yourself to a spa day, enjoying an all-day Wimbledon coverage, or snorting Pixie Sticks with your old sorority sisters on a Friday night... the old saying "you can never get too much of a good thing" comes to mind. The same rings true when diving headfirst into a glorious bowl of luscious fruit, perhaps even topped with honey, sugar, and butterfly kisses.
Traditionally, fruit salads aren't the most exciting items on the menu. Usually relegated to hospitals trays, elementary school lunches, and second-rate sides, leave it to yelpers to discover where to pick some seriously fresh fruit bowls. Ivonne Marie C salivates at the "mere thought of the delicious fruit salad at Julio's, piled high with an array of fruits, raisins, coconut shavings, and walnuts, all glazed with the most delicious honey in the planet!" Expect a similar treat at Miami Juice, where the fruit is drizzled in honey and sprinkled with coconut and sunflower seeds. To Alice S's taste buds, they're more like "perfectly sliced, bite-sized morsels of heaven."
Melanie E discovered a menu of tropical juices at Mery's Ice Cream of all places, with lush flavors like maracuya, lulo, and curuba. Smoothie fanatic Eddy D switch hits between "the Passion Pleasure, the Strawberry Samba or the Mango Madness" at Sun Juice, and promises that it doesn't get much better than sitting on the bench outside, relishing "the juicy, thirst quenching goodness." When Gustavo L wants a mini-break, he goes for a freshly blended juice at El Palacio de Los Jugos. "Depending on which fruit you choose, there is no doubt it will bring back memories of any place in the Caribbean." Ahh, drink in that sunshine!
Speaking of sweetness, the Coconut Grove's Farmers Market has offered up a cornucopia of fresh fruits and veggies since 1980, but Cyn M insists the main attraction are the raw fruit pies, made with exotic red banana, papaya, and pineapple, and presented on a crust of dates, nuts and spices. For an endless choice of fruit milkshakes, Lara D heads south to 49-year old wonderfruitland, Robert is Here. She lets us in on a little known fact: "What most people don't know is that for the same price you can combine two flavors; you could have a chocolate coconut or a key lime pineapple (two of my favorite combinations)." Thanks for planting the seed, LD!

Jordan N. on Wayside Fruit & Vegetable
"This is a very adorable open-air market that has been around for years. Adorable because it's small, quaint, and family-run. Prices seem to be reasonable for the nice goodies here as well, but I did not buy many things.
Atmosphere: Think of a mixture between Norman's Brothers and Robert Is Here fruit…"
Eddy A. on Norman Brothers Produce
"Norman Brothers is an old school farmers market hidden between sunset and the 878.
They have lots of hard to find produce (like kabocha squash and tahitian vanilla beans) and they also carry wagyu burgers...interesting to try out sometime.
but Norman brothers is pricey. but that's expected at these…"
Sarah P. on Gardner's Markets
"Gardner's Market is a nice place to go for your organics, etc... They do have a fabulous deli, and their made to order sandwiches are amazing. Salad bar is great, but very expensive. Everything there is a bit overpriced, though it is a small and less hectic way to pick up a few grocery items and…"
