Bruce Conner's EVE-RAY-FOREVER
On View Now at MAM
With its lightening-fast editing uniting fragments of pre-existing films and scores from popular music, Bruce Conner's EVE-RAY-FOREVER, on view in MAM's Video Gallery through November 11, shows why he is known as the godfather of the music video. "EVE-RAY-FOREVER" is a new video adaptation of a three-screen Conner film from 1965, "Ray, Three Screen," which was based on Conner's 1961 homage to R&B singer Ray Charles set to his 1959 hit "What'd I Say." This presentationv organized by Miami Art Museum and curated by Peter Boswell, will be on view through November 11.

Pip Brant Opening And Meryle Secrest Lecture

A solo exhibition of Pip Brant's most recent work (2004-07) opens at the Frost Art Museum. Brant's fiber-based work, "The Flying Carpet and Other Reusables," on view through December 9, reflects today's political and social headlines. The opening reception begins at 7 p.m. The Steven & Dorothea Green Critics' Lecture Series presents famed biographer Meryle Secrest at 8 p.m. in the Green Library. Ms. Secrest has chronicled the lives of Salvador Dali, Frank Lloyd Wright and Leonard Bernstein, among others. Admission is free.

Jewels - Miami City Ballet Program I

Miami City Ballet opens its season with one of the most glamorous ballets ever created, "Jewels," choreographed by George Balanchine. The three-act ballet is set to music by three different composers: "Emeralds," distinctly French, with music by Gabriel Fauré; "Rubies," jazzy and American, set to Igor Stravinsky; and "Diamonds," imperial Russian, danced to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky. The ballet was inspired by a jewelry collection at Van Cleef and Arpels in New York that piqued Balanchine's imagination. Opening Night is Friday at 8 p.m. with additional performances on Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 2 p.m. Individual tickets and 4-program and 2-program subscriptions are available. "Big Love"

NWSA's Music Theater Division opens the season with the must-see production of Big Love by Charles Mee. This tragicomedy brings together 50 brides and 50 grooms in a passionate battle of the sexes. What could have been a mass wedding turns into an explosive rebellion as the brides carry out their macabre plot to rid themselves of their male counterparts. Performances are Fridays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m., and Sundays at 2 p.m. General admission is $12; students and seniors $5. A reception preceding the opening night performance honors arts supporter Rem Cabrera.

Opening of "Scratching the Surface"

The artwork of NYC artist Carla E. Reyes, Miami artist Katiuska Gonzalez and Fort Lauderdale artist Lena Luckey will be on view at Leche-Vitrines Art Alliance through November 3rd. Each artist explores different concepts and themes, but they all share the expression of their ideas through heavily textured and complex surfaces. Opening Night at the Symphony

New World Symphony launches its 20th anniversary season with a performance featuring founding artistic director/conductor Michael Tilson Thomas and violinist Gil Shaham (pictured). The program will include Richard Strauss' "Don Juan"; Mendelssohn's "Violin Concerto in E minor, Op. 64"; and Leonard Bernstein's "Fancy Free." Michael Tilson Thomas will preface each work with introductory remarks, providing patrons with his own personal insight to the works, as well as putting the works in context for the performance. A special post-performance party at Hice Hall (1620 Drexel Ave.), with many of the artists in attendance, will celebrate the opening of NWS' season. Party tickets ($100) may be purchased at the same time as the performance ticket. Concert tickets are $49.50, $75, $99 and $150. For those unable to attend, the works by Strauss and Bernstein will be webcast by NWS beginning at 7:35 p.m.

"The Seven Powers Come by the Sea"

Magdalena Campos-Pons, the great-granddaughter of a Nigerian slave, grew up in Matanzas, Cuba, in the midst of sugar plantations and the remnants of her African heritage. She left Cuba in 1988 and has addressed the issues of the Diaspora and her personal experiences through multi-media art projects that often pay homage to her people and her mother and grandmother. Professor Carol Damian will discuss the newest work in this retrospective exhibition on view at the Bass Museum of Art through November 11. Admission is $5.

"Weapons of Mass Distraction" Exhibit Opening

An exhibit of female torsos created by Jersey-born artist Theresa Marie Calluori launches the new season of ongoing shows at the World Erotic Art Museum. Each of Calluori's plastic torsos, found in a dumpster by a friend, has been painstakingly made into a collage that speaks to both men and women as objects, appliances and toys, each erotic, serious and just plain amusing. Join WEAM founder Naomi Wilzig for a champagne reception to celebrate the museum's 2nd anniversary and the opening of "Weapons of Mass Distraction," on view through November 15. Opening of "Song of Songs" Art Illumination

Inspired by illuminated manuscripts, artist Debra Band weaves the precious words from the Biblical love story and creates 65 pages of original paintings. Using exotic papers, parchment, paint, gold and gems, Band creates the richly detailed works of art in her Song of Songs. The work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the country, and Ms. Band was honored by having State of Israel Bonds select a page from her work for their 2003 "Chai" bond certificate. The public is invited to celebrate the exhibition's opening at Alper JCC.

Playwright Eve Ensler, renowned for her pioneering work "The Vagina Monologues," will perform in Any One of Us: Words from Prison, Miami. Conceived by Ensler, staged and directed by ArtSpring founder Leslie Neal, the production features local artists, advocates, celebrities and community leaders. It's an evening of theater filled with powerful and honest writings by women in prison that reveals the connection between incarceration and the violence that often brings them there. Proceeds benefit programs of Women's Fund of Miami-Dade and other intervention and education programs for at-risk girls and to help stop violence against women and girls. Tickets are $50 and $250.

The Who's "Tommy"

The Who's "Tommy" is the undisputed king of radical rock musicals and was the first of its kind to set a new and provocative trend for writers and composers in musical theatre. Set in London, 1940, Tommy's father, presumed missing in action, returns home unexpectedly and discovers his wife with a new lover. After a brief fight, his father kills the lover in self-defense. Having witnessed the murder in the reflection of a mirror, the traumatized 4 year old is left deaf, dumb and blind. From this point, Tommy is propelled along an amazing journey through the 40's, 50's and 60's toward his eventual manhood and the reconnection with his sentient being. This production is presented by FIU Theatre & Dance Department.
