On Saturday December 8, leading experts in the history of design and popular culture will meet at the Bass Museum of Art to discuss the achievements of mid-century architects, furniture designers and interior designers, and will explore their place within the tradition of American and European Modernism. PANELISTS
Georgette Ballance, Professor of Design History and Director of the Design Archives at the New World School of the Arts.
David Hickey, writer for American publications including Rolling Stone, Art News, Art in America, Artforum, Harper's Magazine, and Vanity Fair. He was Executive Editor for Art in America magazine, contributing editor to The Village Voice, and is currently Professor of English at the University of Nevada Las Vegas.
Thomas Hine, author of five books including Populuxe, a definitive text on mid-century popular culture and The Great Funk: Falling Apart and Coming Together (on a Shag Rug) in the Seventies. Mr. Hine is a Yale graduate and has taught courses at both the University of Pennsylvania and Temple University. He has lectured at Yale, Syracuse, Drexel, and Michigan State Universities, museums including the Philadelphia Museum of Art, the Museum of the City of New York, the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, and the Worcester Art Museum.
Pat Kirkham, Educator, author, editor and Professor of Design History and Cultural Studies at the Bard Graduate Center for Studies in the Decorative Arts, Design and Culture. Her publications include Charles and Ray Eames (1995) and A View from the Interior: Women and Design (Yale University Press, 2000). Additional works include Twentieth- Century Interiors (2007); Saul Bass (2007) and Women Designers in the U. S. A., 1900- 2000: Diversity and Difference (2000).
Gwendolyn Wright, Professor of Architecture, Planning and Preservation and Professor of History at Columbia University, and star of TV show, History Detective.
MODERATOR
Beth Dunlop Editor in Chief of Home Miami magazine and architecture critic for The Miami Herald. Ms. Dunlop won more than 30 awards for her writing and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. She is the author of numerous books, including Florida's Vanishing Architecture, Building a Dream: The Art of Disney Architecture, Miami Trends and Traditions, and A House for My Mother. She has a Bachelor's degree from Vassar College.
