New Restaurant- cafe barcelona- from Daily Candy
Basque in the Glory
Cafe Barcelona Opens
Good things come in small packages. Sadly, South Beach never got the memo.
Between the colossal clubs and the mega restaurants, there’s no neighborhood spot to just hang out.
Unless you count Cafe Barcelona, the tapas lounge that just opened on Espanola Way.
The tiny Spanish joint serves a variety of pinchos (bread with toppings). The little apps come in pairs and are all less than $6. Standouts include Spanish Iberico ham with garlic and tomato, eggplant topped with goat cheese and red peppers, and pork with caramelized apples.
Pull up a seat at the snug bar for some Spanish wine or a cocktail prepared with fresh-squeezed juice. The charm lies in the Spanish-tiled walls, Basque art collages, and exposed silver-foil air ducts — all of which give it a hidden gem vibe.
Turns out, size does matter.
Cafe Barcelona, 440 Espanola Way, Miami Beach (305-538-8272).

So they tell me the original name chosen for Bal Harbour was Bay Harbour. However, the planning committee didn't think that was appropriate for a city that was on the beach. Thus, the "b" was taken from the word bay and the "a" and "l" were taken from the word Atlantic; hence the word "Bal" was created. SUMMER FILM SERIES
CINEMATIC DETOURS: ROAD MOVIES
The "road movies" genre has much to tell us about national identity. The films in our annual summer series, while depicting the personal crises and transformations of their characters, offer us a valuable lens into the culture and times in which they were produced. The films are screened each Thursday in August at 7pm and introduced by University of Miami film studies scholars. Presented with the Cultural Services of the Embassy of France/Miami Chapter at the Consulate General. Free for members and students; $10 all others.
Thursday, August 14, 7pm
GUN CRAZY (1949, USA, Joseph Lewis, 86 min, b&w, 16mm)—This low-budget "B" noir depicts a deadly crime spree perpetrated by a newly married Second World War veteran fixated on guns and a female six-shooter who's an ex-carnival performer. The pair go together like "guns and ammunition." The film, noteworthy for remarkable location shooting, includes a celebrated bank heist sequence that plays out in one long take. Deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress in 1998, it was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
PLAN AHEAD FOR...
Friday, August 22, 7pm
JOSHUA HAWLEY ON THEODORE ROOSEVELT AND THE MAKING OF THE PROGRESSIVE ERA—Join the Wolf Pack and the Association of Yale Alumni as they present Theodore Roosevelt: Preacher of Righteousness. In his book, Joshua Hawley explores the dimensions of Roosevelt's politics—its historical context, intellectual sources, practice, and its effect on his era and our own. Book signing and reception to follow in The Wolfsonian's lobby. RSVP required: 305.535.2631 or thea@thewolf.fiu.edu. Sponsored by the Yale Club of Miami and David R. Sanchez of Stonehaven LLC, and in collaboration with Legal Art Miami. $10 admission.
Sunday, August 24, 3pm
FREE FILM SCREENINGS: MIAMI NOIR: THE ARTHUR E. TEELE STORY (2008, USA, 60 min) AND MILIA (2008, USA, 15 min)—Join filmmakers Sam Rega, Joshua Miller, and Jorge Valdes-Iga for the screenings of Miami Noir: The Arthur E. Teele Story and Milia. Miami Noir is a documentary that examines the events that led up to the suicide of Miami City Commissioner Arthur Teele, Jr. in the lobby of the Miami Herald newspaper building on July 27, 2005. This film blends interviews with dramatizations to portray one of Miami's most controversial, political, and human interest stories.
In Milia, Nathaniel, a New York fashion photographer, stumbles upon the headshot of Milia, a model who strongly reminds him of a past love. Intrigued, Nathaniel books Milia for test shots, only to realize that she is his daughter. Unaware of this, Milia finds herself falling in love with her father. Both films are free and open to the public and followed by an engaging Q + A session with the filmmakers.

CMO-VP for SaaS
We are conducting an executive search for the Chief Marketing Officer/Vice President Marketing for a successful SaaS company headquartered in the San Francisco Bay area. (Title depends upon experience.) Company is the leader in an emerging market space that is on target to be a $5B market in the next 3-5 years. The Sweet Hereafter (Canada/1997)
With Ian Holm, Caerthan Banks, Sarah Polley, Tom McCamus
On a winter's day, in the small rural community of Sam Dent, British Columbia, a school bus inexplicably crashes into a frozen lake, taking the lives of fourteen children and injuring many others. Shortly thereafter, Mitchell Stephens (Ian Holm), a big city lawyer, comes to the community with promises to compensate its citizens for their loss. With a view to mounting a class-action lawsuit on behalf of the accident victims, Stephens interviews the survivors of the crash and the families who are mourning the deaths of their children. Through a series of emotionally charged meetings, we are presented with a prismatic view of the accident and its impact on the town. At the same time, through the interviews and a series of flashbacks, we discover disturbing secrets which reveal that, in some ways, the community was already on the road to losing its children.

My Winnipeg (Guy Maddin/Canada/2008)
With Darcy Fehr, Ann Savage, Amy Stewert, Louis Negin
This is Guy Maddin’s hilariously wacky and profoundly touching goodbye letter to his childhood hometown. The film is a documentary (or “docu-fantasia” as Maddin proclaims) that blends local and personal history with surrealist images and metaphorical myths that cover everything from the fire at the local park, which leads to a frozen lake of distressed horse heads, to pivotal, sometimes traumatic, factually heightened scenes from Maddin’s own childhood.
"As surprising and delightful as any filmmaker has ever been."

Ever wonder what came before SUNSET BOULEVARD, the last time Gloria Swanson and Erich Von Stroheim worked together, until that film in 1950?
Photo: Gloria Swanson by Edward Steichen©, 1924
In 1928, after years of struggles within the studio system, master director Erich Von Stroheim found the opportunity to create his crowning achievement: a storybook romance of intoxicating beauty, counterbalanced with a frightfully grim tale of moral corruption. Gloria Swanson, powerful in 1928 enough to be both star and producer, stars as an innocent convent girl who falls under the spell of a handsome prince (Walter Byron) on the eve of his marriage to a diabolical queen (Seena Owen). Unreleased in the United States, Queen Kelly might have been Von Stroheim's greatest film had actress/producer Swanson not halted it in mid-production. Kino presents the critically-acclaimed restoration of Von Stroheim's ambitious epic, which incorporates many of the scenes (set within an African brothel) that caused Swanson to shut down the film.

The Last Mistress (Une vielle maîtresse)
(Catherine Breillat/France/2008)
With Asia Argento, Fu-ad Ait Aattou, Roxane Mesquida
The Last Mistress marks the monumental pairing of cinema's premiere provocateur, director Catherine Breillat (Romance, Fat Girl) with the most fearless and explosive actor of our generation, Asia Argento (Marie Antoinette, Boarding Gate). A penniless rogue, Ryno de Marigny (newcomer Fu-ad Ait Aattou), shocks 19th century France with his engagement to the virginal gem of the aristocracy, Hermangarde (Roxane Mesquida of Fat Girl). As lurid speculations of Ryno's ten year affair with the carnal Vellini (Argento) manifest, a supremely erotic and wickedly humorous depiction of human lust is revealed - overriding the brittle facade of nobility and reverence. Bolstered by Breillat's mastery of the medium and Argento's commanding performance, The Last Mistress is a highly entertaining yet incredibly provocative film that has resulted in unanimous praise from audiences and critics across the world.

Miami Beach Cinemateque - August 2008 schedule
13 WED 7pm Meet & Greet Reception/ 8pm film:
An Evening with Elliot Tiber
Author of Taking Woodstock
Before there was a Woodstock Concert, there was Elliot Tiber.
In the summer of 1969, Elliot Tiber’s life changed in a way he never could have foreseen. Greenwich Village had become the mecca for gay people in America. There, Elliot had socialized with the likes of Truman Capote, Tennessee Williams, Andy Warhol, and a talented young photographer named Robert Mapplethorpe. Then on Friday, June 27, Elliot walked into the Stonewall Inn and witnessed the riot that would galvanize the gay movement in the United States. And on July 17, when Elliot read that the Woodstock Concert promoters had lost their license to stage the show in Wallkill, he called to offer his help in finding a new venue. In the days that followed, Elliot found himself swept up in a vortex that would change his life forever.
The events that unfolded during that hot New York summer have come to be recognized as major turning points in our cultural history. Few, however, have enjoyed Elliot Tiber’s unique view of those events. Taking Woodstock is the funny, touching, and true story of the man who enabled Woodstock to take place. It is also the personal story of one man who took stock of his life, his lifestyle, and his future. In short, Taking Woodstock is like no history of Woodstock you have ever experienced.
Meet Elliot Tiber, the man who SAVED Woodstock, and whose book and docu-comedy film are being made into a feature film by Ang Lee! Elliot will introduce his film, and there will be a Q&A and booksigning afterwards.
This is a fundraising event for Gay American Heroes. The “adoption of a hero”, wine and cheese reception, film, and After Party at HALO are included in the ticket price of $40.
*Please be advised that Gay American Heroes will be filming an upcoming documentary during the event.

The Hollywood Life of Christopher Isherwood and Don Bachardy
“No one believed they could last so long. . .”
Documentary with Don Bachardy, Christopher Isherwood, John Boorman,
Leslie Caron, Liza Minnelli, Gloria Stuart, Michael York
Chris and Don is the true-life story of the passionate three-decade relationship between British writer Christopher Isherwood (whose Berlin Stories was the basis for all incarnations of Cabaret) and American portrait painter Don Bachardy, thirty years his junior. From Isherwood’s Kit-Kat-Club years in Weimar-era Germany (the inspiration for his most famous work) to the couple’s first meeting on the beaches of 1950s Malibu, their against-all-odds saga is brought to dazzling life by a treasure trove of multimedia. With Isherwood’s status as an out-and-proud gay maverick, and Bachardy’s eventual artistic triumph away from the considerable shadow of his life partner, Chris and Don is above all a joyful celebration of a most extraordinary couple.

Queen Kelly (Erich Von Stroheim/USA/1928)
Starring Gloria Swanson as “Queen Kelly”

With Kevin Bacon, Colin Firth, Alison Lohman, Kristin Adams
“When you have everything you want, how far is too far?”
In 1950s Miami, Lanny Morris (Kevin Bacon) and Vince Collins (Colin Firth) are superstar entertainers, an odd couple comedy act (based, loosely, on Jerry Lewis and Dean Martin and other lounge performers). The night a beautiful naked corpse is found in the bath of their hotel suite, the duo breaks up and they never speak again ... until 15 years later they are somehow brought together by an ambitious young writer, Karen O'Connor (Alison Lohman) who is desperately trying to write the Vince Collins biography - complete with details surrounding the mystery death - but competing with Lanny's own plans to publish his life story. . .

“A Voyeur’s Journey: ATOM EGOYAN”

In the brilliantly realized surreal thriller, adapted from William Trevor's popular novel, Felicia (Elaine Cassidy), a pregnant Irish girl searching for her boyfriend in the English midlands, is befriended by Joseph Hilditch (Bob Hoskins), a catering manager who also happens to be a serial killer. Atom Egoyan, Canada's most gifted filmmaker, elevates this cat-and-mouse game into a film that transcends genre by entering the characters' consciousness and implying a world of half-discernible connections in which the weather, the landscape and the chance encounters of strangers suggest the sense of a grand design. — Stephen Holden, The New York Times

Richard Steinberg for Democratic Primary for the State House, District 106
friend, Miami Beach Vice Mayor Richard Steinberg, is running in the Democratic Primary for the State House, District 106. Richard has been a great leader in our community as an elected official in Miami Beach for the past seven years and as the current President of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities. In Miami Beach, Richard has been a champion for human rights, the environment, education and ethical government. Richard has also been extremely involved with a number of charities, including Big Brothers Big Sister.
In Tallahassee, Richard will work hard on our behalf. He will continue to be a strong voice as he fights for our school children, seniors, families and small businesses. But he needs our support to address these priorities.
Voter turnout is expected to be very low, so every single vote counts. We need to make sure all of our Democratic family and friends who live in the District vote. The District includes the Beaches from 41st Street north to the Broward County line, and on the Mainland includes Keystone Point, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Highland Lakes and Skylake.
Early voting has already started (click here for times and locations) and Election Day is just around the corner (August 26th). Time is of the essence. Let’s help get Florida back on track by electing Richard Steinberg!
Let me share with you what some of our local community organizations are saying about Richard:
The Fraternal Order of Police, District 6 said in their endorsement letter “…we believe that you [Richard Steinberg] have shown a genuine interest in serving our community, and that you are a friend to law enforcement.”
The South Florida Council of Firefighters said in their endorsement letter, “…we believe that you [Richard Steinberg] are by far the most qualified to understand the unique set of issues and concerns that confront firefighters and paramedics. We feel comfortable that once you are elected to the Florida House of Representatives you will know our issues and how to forward them through the political process."
The Service Employees International Union of Florida said in their endorsement letter “We believe we share a common vision for Florida- one in which working families have respect and the right for fair representation.”
In addition to the organizations listed above, Richard is honored to have the support of Senator Gwen Margolis, United Teachers of Dade, Communications Workers of America Local 3178, SAVE Dade, Equality Florida and many more.
You may also visit Richard’s website at www.RichardSteinberg.com for more information. If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail Richard (Richard at RichardSteinberg.com).
Once again, please encourage all your friends and family to vote for Democrat Richard Steinberg for State House. You can even do it by simply forwarding this e-mail!

night'scap'er comments and quotes:
Harald Neuweg, Owner Fritz & Franz Bierhaus
"Booking Nightscape is a sure thing for a really great night. The music is terrific. They always bring a lot of people and the sales when they play are better than any other band in South Florida. People get into the grove with Nightscape. It's always a party and the crowd is staying to the end."
Denis Renuart, President, Full Sail Marketing
"Nightscape is the best damn blues/ Rock/ R&B band in the South East! Natty has the voice of an angel dressed in blue-jeans and the bluesy soul of Coco Taylor with the heart wrenching emotive tonality of Bonnie Raitt and Eva Cassidy wrapped into one".
Hiram Norman, Director, America Online
"Whenever I'm in town I always try to catch a Nightscape show. Their energy and
enthusiasm is infectious. They always deliver a great evening"
Megan Marconi, Producer, Las Vegas Little Blackbook
"Nightscape's rhythm section of Goldberg and Norman hold down a steady beat
that packs a one-two punch. They lay down tracks for some great music."
Andy Hooper, Director Human Resources, Burger King
"Nightscape's cool grooves and powerful vocals will have you on your feet, and maybe on the tables before the night's over. Their sets are sure to make you groove - with cool jazz to classic rock 'n roll, the band knows how to get the house on its feet"
Kate Kindarski, Consultant, Global Merchant Investment Group
"Nightscape knows how to really make the blues come alive; they pick up the pace, make it really lively and run themes that are gritty in their truth but always make you smile in relating…like their version of Copeland's "I Always Get My Man" or Newman's "Leave Your Hat On".
Salvador Sanlley, President, G-Star Airlines, Santiago Chile
"Nightscape's music is an infectious time machine and it transports me back to some of the happiest times of my life ... life at its best. I love being transported and love watching those guys playing the transporter."
Sherry Mitchell-Bruker, Ph.D. Research Hydrologist Everglades National Park
"Whenever Nightscape plays, we get a group of our friends together and come for a good time. We enjoy the mix of blues, jazz and rock. They are a great band!"
Stacy VanBuren, Sales Representative Brava, breast enhancing systems

"I mark my calendar for all of Nightscape's "public" gigs. I try not to miss them.
Natty is an angel and the band is the best! I get a lot of pleasure out of watching them play and listening to their music."
Al Arostegui, Real Estate Broker.
"As a Miami Native who has been in and around the local music scene, even as a drummer, for over 40 years, I can tell you that "Nightscape" has put together some of the best entertainment in the local Blues/ R&B/ Rock/ get your ass up and dance genre that I have ever seen. I am a huge fan and have asked them to notify me for every gig they 'play out'. I am always looking forward to the next time I see them play."
Spencer Jones, Entrepreneur
"Nightscape is a great band, but I have yet to understand how they got such a cute girl to sing (so well) with a bunch of old farts."
Jeff Baker, renowned music critic from Boston
"About Nightscape--Spencer Jones got it right".
Harald Neuweg, Owner The Bierhaus in Coral Gables:
Whenever Nightscape has played at the Bierhaus over the past 5 years, you always pulled in a lot of people, a lot more than most bands, but last Saturday night was maybe the best Saturday we have ever had since opening the Bierhaus. You guys did a fantastic job and Natty's voice is getting
better every time she performs (she blew me away on "At Last"). I really had a great time, especially knowing it would be one of my last times to hear you at the Bierhaus before heading off to open the new restaurant in Aspen, (unless you come and make an appearance in Aspen!) *I appreciated
the performance very much as well as all the hard work that all of you have put into Nightscape and making if a great experience for your fans over the years*.
*Please thank everyone in the band for me and your friends and fans of Nightscape* *for such a great evening*. *Your Nightscaper crowd is exceptional and we love it when we can be of service to them.*
I am very happy to be able to call you and all the members of Nightscape my Friends. I know Peter will have you at the Bierhaus many more times over the coming years. I sincerely appreciate all that you have done for me and the Bierhaus family over the past years.
