Richard Steinberg for Democratic Primary for the State House, District 106

friend, Miami Beach Vice Mayor Richard Steinberg, is running in the Democratic Primary for the State House, District 106. Richard has been a great leader in our community as an elected official in Miami Beach for the past seven years and as the current President of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities. In Miami Beach, Richard has been a champion for human rights, the environment, education and ethical government. Richard has also been extremely involved with a number of charities, including Big Brothers Big Sister.

In Tallahassee, Richard will work hard on our behalf. He will continue to be a strong voice as he fights for our school children, seniors, families and small businesses. But he needs our support to address these priorities.

Voter turnout is expected to be very low, so every single vote counts. We need to make sure all of our Democratic family and friends who live in the District vote. The District includes the Beaches from 41st Street north to the Broward County line, and on the Mainland includes Keystone Point, North Miami Beach, Aventura, Highland Lakes and Skylake.

Early voting has already started (click here for times and locations) and Election Day is just around the corner (August 26th). Time is of the essence. Let’s help get Florida back on track by electing Richard Steinberg!

Let me share with you what some of our local community organizations are saying about Richard:

The Fraternal Order of Police, District 6 said in their endorsement letter “…we believe that you [Richard Steinberg] have shown a genuine interest in serving our community, and that you are a friend to law enforcement.”

The South Florida Council of Firefighters said in their endorsement letter, “…we believe that you [Richard Steinberg] are by far the most qualified to understand the unique set of issues and concerns that confront firefighters and paramedics. We feel comfortable that once you are elected to the Florida House of Representatives you will know our issues and how to forward them through the political process."

The Service Employees International Union of Florida said in their endorsement letter “We believe we share a common vision for Florida- one in which working families have respect and the right for fair representation.”

In addition to the organizations listed above, Richard is honored to have the support of Senator Gwen Margolis, United Teachers of Dade, Communications Workers of America Local 3178, SAVE Dade, Equality Florida and many more.

Joe Geller is a much better choice.

He has been a strong advocate for human rights, the environment, education and ethical government, not just in recent years, but for decades.

As Chairman of the Democratic Party he led Miami-Dade County to two presidential victories (1992 and 1996).

He's been a great mayor for North Bay Village - just ask anyone who lives there.

The Miami Herald had this to saty in its endorsement of Joe:

"Dan Gelber, who is term-limited in the House and is running for a Senate seat, will leave big shoes to fill. Fortunately, two well-qualified candidates -- former North Bay Village Mayor Joe Geller and Miami Beach Commissioner Richard Steinberg, both Democrats -- have chosen to run. Because no Republican is running, the contest is open. So Democrats and Republicans can vote in the Aug. 26 primary, and the winner gets the seat.

The district covers Miami Beach, and includes parts of Miami Shores, North Miami and North Miami Beach. Both Mr. Steinberg and Mr. Geller are lawyers who have served their communities well. Mr. Steinberg, 35, has good ideas for windstorm-insurance reform and other issues. So, too, does Mr. Geller, 54, and his maturity, passion and experience tilt the balance in his favor.

Mr. Geller says the Legislature's priorities are wrong because, ''There is too much partisan rhetoric and not enough problem solving.'' To lower windstorm rates, he would: tighten standards for rate setting and for insurers' storm-prediction models; lower reinsurance rates to attract insurers and stabilize the market; and boost home hardening to reduce potential storm damage.

He wants to increase spending on public education at all levels and return to CHPAS (Community Health Purchasing Alliances) to drive down healthcare costs. He would bolster South Florida's legislative clout by working closer with other urban areas, and search for ''win-win solutions'' with lawmakers from rural and conservative communities.

Mr. Geller cites many reasons for continuing Florida's drilling moratorium and would fight to have Lottery dollars used to enhance, not replace, education funding.

For House District 106, The Miami Herald recommends JOSEPH S. ''JOE'' GELLER."
