Books and Books events

The Florida Center for the Literary Arts works closely with Books & Books to bring to South Florida some of the world’s most noted authors. This month brings an extraordinary group whose books span the genres of fiction to memoir to nonfiction – all of it certain to inspire. Enjoy!

Daina Chaviano, The Island of Eternal Love, 8 p.m., Thurs., June 12, Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Three families from Africa, Spain and China and a century of living comprise this haunting, tantalizing, ambitious, provocative and magical novel that uncovers the secrets of a woman, a family , and an island wrapped up in a spellbinding tale. Chaviano, who lives in Miami, Florida, is the most translated Cuban novelist of all time.

Andre Dubus III, The Garden of Last Days, 8 p.m., Thurs., June 19, Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. A raw and passionate page-turning narrative about sex and parenthood and honor and masculinity, from the author of the bestseller, House of Sand and Fog.

Barbara Ehrenreich, This Land is Their Land, 7 p.m., Thurs., June 26, Books and Books, 265 Aragon Ave., Coral Gables. Ehrenreich’s first book of satirical commentary is full of wit and generosity. These reports from a divided nation show that Ehrenreich is, as the late Molly Ivins said, “good for the soul.”

Robert Thurman, Why the Dalai Lama Matters, 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 25, Maurice Guzman Concert Hall, University of Miami Frost School of Music, 1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables. Author Robert Thurman explores in his book why the Dalai Lama has earned the world’s love and respect, and how restoring Tibet’s autonomy within China is possible, reasonable and necessary for a peaceful global future. Presented in collaboration with Books & Books, the University of Miami, Tibetan Library Group of Miami, and Amnesty International.

In July, Salman Rushdie, one of the world’s most important living writers, will be in Miami to discuss his new book, The Enchantress of Florence, the gripping, bawdy and profoundly moving story of a woman trying to make her own destiny in a man’s world. Tickets are required to attend the reading that begins at 7:30 p.m., Tues., July 8, Temple Judea, 5500 Granada Blvd., Coral Gables . You get two tickets for each copy purchased of his novel.
