The House of Tom - Mundo, Monde, Mondo

Directed by: Ana Jobim Documentary

The House of Tom - Mundo, Monde, Mondo tells the love story of Antonio

Carlos Jobim through music, family and nature. This documentary, produced

and directed by his widow and photographer Ana Jobim, brings never before

released images and interviews spanning 15 years of his day-to-day life in his three

favorite places in the world: New York, Rio de Janeiro and his country house.

Even the most loyal fan of this musical and poetic maestro may be surprised with

these scenes, which include the birth of a couple of important compositions. Aside

from beautiful images of the Atlantic Forest, which Jobim loved so much, this work

provides an intimate view of his family and lovely encounters with friends.

The Band’s Visit (Bikur Ha-Tizmoret)

(Eran Kolirin Israel/France/2007)

Once-not long ago-a small Egyptian police band arrived in Israel. They came to play

at an initiation ceremony, but, due to bureaucracy, bad luck, or for whatever reason,

they were left stranded at the airport. They tried to manage on their own, only to find

themselves in a desolate, almost forgotten small Israeli town, somewhere in the heart

of the desert. A lost band in a lost town. Not many remember this...

It wasn't that important.

Paranoid Park (Gus Van Sant/2007)

With Gabe Nevins, Daniel Liu, Lauren McKinney

Cinematography by Christopher Doyle

An unsolved murder at Portland’s infamous Paranoid Park brings detectives to a

local high school, propelling a young skater into a moral odyssey where he must

not only deal with the pain and disconnect of adolescence but the consequences

of his own actions. With Christopher Doyle (Wong Kar Wai films) as cinematographer,

Gus Van Sant uses 8mm and a square format to capture the realism and grittiness of the

skateboarder’s world, in his most successfully realized independent film since the

roots of his career.

Winner: 60th Anniversary Prize Cannes Film Festival

Independent Spirit Awards Producers Award

Bodil Awards Best American Film

“What strikes me the hardest about Paranoid Park is the intimacy, the love—

carnal, paternal, human—of Mr. Van Sant’s expansive, embracing vision.

No one is really ready for Paranoid Park, but neither do we have to go there alone”

—Manohla Dargis, New York Times

“*****! UNFORGETTABLE. Bursting with incredible visuals. Van Sant

has created his most compassionate film about a lost boy since My Own

Private Idaho.”-Melissa Anderson, Time Out New York

Chop Shop (Ramin Bahrani/2007/USA)

With Alejandro Polanco, Isamar Gonzales, Ahmad Razvi, Carlos Zapata

The American Independent festival sensation, CHOP SHOP is the story of Alejandro

(Alejandro Polanco), a twelve-year-old Latino street orphan in Willet’s Point, also

known as the “Iron Triangle,” a vibrant, sprawling, industrial neighborhood teeming

with auto-body repair shops, scrap yards, and garbage dumps on the outskirts of

Queens, New York. Alejandro is a tough and ambitious Latino street orphan on the

verge of adolescence. In this chaotic world of adults, young Alejandro struggles to

make a better life for himself and his 16-year-old sister, Isamar. Intimate, heartbreaking

and yet ultimately hopeful, CHOP SHOP is a portrait of a young boy navigating his

way through a chaotic adult world. Set in a stunning and unique location, it is subtle

and simple, but tells a profound story about the people who live, work, and dream there.

and inspired, and brave” --Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times

Taxi To The Dark Side

(Alex Gibney/2007) 106 min.

From the director of Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room, Alex Gibney’s

TAXI TO THE DARK SIDE is a gripping investigation into the reckless use of

power by the Bush Administration. The film exposes a policy of detention and

interrogation that condones torture and the abrogation of human rights. Alex

Gibney’s 2007 Academy Award winning Best Documentary exposé of war-time

interrogation techniques has become the last word in exposing the truth in wartime

documentaries.

WINNER: Academy Award Best Documentary 2007

Chicago Int. Film Festival Best Documentary

Writer’s Guild of America Documentary Screenplay Award

"There are those, their numbers shrinking every day, who would agree we

have to 'work the dark side.' Growing numbers of us are yearning for the light.

What is the other side? See this movie, and you tell me." - Roger Ebert

Up The Yangtze

(Yung Chang/Canada/2008)

In China, it is simply known as “The River.” But the Yangtze—and all of the life

that surrounds it—is undergoing a truly astonishing transformation wrought by the

largest hydroelectric project in history, the Three Gorges Dam. Canadian documentary

filmmaker Yung Chang returns to the gorgeous, now-disappearing landscape of his

grandfather’s youth to trace the surreal life of a “farewell cruise” that traverses the

gargantuan waterway. With Altmanesque narrative agility, a humanist gaze and wry wit,

Chang beautifully captures the microcosmic society. Singularly moving and cinematically

breathtaking, UP THE YANGTZE gives a human dimension to the wrenching changes

facing not only an increasingly globalized China, but the world at large.

WINNER: Sundance Film Festival Grand Jury Prize for Documentary

“A GLORIOUSLY CINEMATIC DOC!”—Jake Anderson Variety

“By journey's end, Yung has found, in the Yangtze, a brilliant natural metaphor

for upward mobility in modern China: Whether they hail from the lowlands or

the urban centers, everyone here is scrambling to reach higher ground.”
