The Big Sweep
A South Beach Clean-up Competition




When: Saturday, June 14, 2008 - 8 AM to 2 PM

Where: South Pointe Beach (Government Cut) to 14th Street Beach, Miami Beach

What: Beach clean-up competition between the beach sections mentioned above. (There will be two Volunteer Sign-up stations and one End station, where all groups will finally meet.)

· Station 1: South Pointe - Volunteer Sign-up

· Station 2: 14th Street Beach - Volunteer Sign-up

· Station 3: End Station between 7th and 8th Streets – West or East of the dune. One or two 10 X 10 tents will be placed at the End Station location where lunch will be served and prizes awarded. One clean-up partner tent may also be placed at this location, such as the Surfrider Foundation.

How: Volunteers or volunteer groups will be pre-assigned to one of the Sign-up Stations 2 days before the event date via an email from ECOMB staff.



Schedule:

· 8:00 AM: Registration begins and each volunteer receives gloves and a bag for cigarette butts and one for regular trash. Snacks, fruits and beverages will be served at this time.

· 8:30 AM: Competition begins at Stations 1 and 2. Volunteer groups move from Stations 1 and 2 towards the End Station.

· 11:30 AM: Competition ends at the End Station and lunch is served. Volunteers each receive a Raffle Ticket for every bag of trash collected.

· 12:00 PM: Raffle ticket winners are announced.

· 12:30 Noon: Collected trash is spread out over two locations, designated by cones, east of the main tent. Local media photographs piles of litter.

· 1:30 PM: Clean-up area and prepare to leave

· 2:00 PM: End of event.


Parking: There will be two parking sites

· For Station 1 – Pier Park (in front of Nikki Beach)

· For Station 2 – (to be decided)

Support: To be provided by the City of Miami Beach, Boucher Brothers

· Two City of Miami Beach trucks will patrol the beach with water coolers, cups, gloves and additional trash bags.

· Boucher Brothers' golf carts will also patrol the beach in order to collect volunteer trash bags that have been filled before their arrival at the End Station and to rally the volunteers.



Competition Details

· Volunteers will be able to participate in groups or as individuals and "each will receive a "You're Awesome!" raffle ticket towards a prize.

· Groups: will be awarded Trophies based on three categories

o Team with the largest number of volunteers

o Team that collects the largest amount of cigarette butts by weight

o Team that collects the largest amount of general trash



Grand Finale

At the end of the event, all collected litter will be removed from the bags and spread out in two areas, designated by cones, east of the main tent: one area for cigarette butts and the other for general litter. Photographers from local media will document the litter pile for news coverage that weekend and for use by ECOMB's subsequent litter-prevention programs. Afterwards, the litter will be re-bagged in trash and recycling bags for final pick-up.
