Megaphone‏- film industry news

So many of you have called and written to inquire about our tenth anniversary Collaboration… A Short Film Contest. We finally have some news for you – and we think you’ll like the departure we’ve taken for this year’s event. In addition to putting together a retrospective of past winners, we are going to ask you to join us in supporting Pangea Day (pangeaday.org) – a worldwide expression of unity in the community through the use of film. On May 10th, the winners (chosen by the Pangea Day organization) will be screened during a four hour window, on a variety of media simultaneously throughout the world and there will be one winner from each continent who will receive $5,000 courtesy of Participant Films (Charlie Wilson’s War).

Sounds fabulous…and so much more gratifying. To participate with us, submit your films to Pangea Day (the address is on the website so check below)

We are writing to tell you about an extraordinary opportunity for filmmakers to show their work to the entire world. On May 10, 2008, Pangea Day, we are assembling a global audience to watch a powerful program of short films. Below is our call for entries and much more information is available about Pangea Day at our website www.pangeaday.org.

It's a big idea, and we would love for you to be a part of it!

We are looking for short, powerful stories that haven't been told before. . .made by the world, for the world. We're looking for films that will make people laugh, pause, and think. They can be fiction, non-fiction, animated, or your own unique mixture. Perhaps you've already created a film that would be perfect for Pangea Day? Or you have a scene that never made it into a film that you believe the world should see.

Jehane Noujaim, award-winning documentary filmmaker of Control Room, created Pangea Day after winning the prestigious TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) prize which granted her a wish to change the world. Knowing that people are divided by borders, race, religion, and conflict, but most of all by misunderstanding and mistrust, Jehane decided her wish would use the power of film to bring the world a little closer together, thus sowing the seeds for Pangea Day.

Below you will find more information about Pangea Day, where to send your film, the kinds of films we are looking for and the license fees and the prizes we are providing. We look forward to sharing your stories with the world.

Pangea Day Call for Entries

"Movies alone can't change the world, but the people who watch them can. If you had the world's attention for five minutes, what story would you tell?"
-Jehane Noujaim

From the dawn of time, humans have gathered around the village campfire to share their stories, a primal experience creating strong emotions and building community. The world has shrunk, and today our village is global. But we haven't yet figured out how to listen to each other. Think of Pangea Day as a modern-day campfire. It will be a moment in time, when we stop, gather together, and listen to each others' stories -- stories told using the most powerful story-telling technology our species has ever known: film.

So in thinking of your film, the starting point is to imagine millions of people in different countries gathered around in the flickering light, and waiting in hushed silence. . .for your film to begin. What images would you show? What story will you tell? What would you want everybody to understand in the coffee shops of Paris, the town squares of Cairo and the rural villages of the United States about your family, your loves, your fears, your doubts, your secrets? Is there something already in your library, a film that you started but never finished. . .something you have seen that you immediately wanted the whole world to see?

We're looking for films that will make people laugh, pause and think. They can be fiction, non-fiction, real-life, animation or your own unique mixture. And above all, they should tell a story that someone else on the other side of the world will be able to relate to. Is that possible? Perhaps we're too different. (We don’t think so…)

Deadline: February 15, 2008.

PARTICIPANT PRODUCTIONS AWARDS & GRANT

Just as important as the stories shared on Pangea Day are the storytellers themselves. A grant and awards program has been established through a partnership with Participant Productions, the production company behind such socially conscious films as An Inconvenient Truth; Syriana; and Good Night, And Good Luck.

For the "Outstanding Filmmakers Awards Program," Participant Productions will select five filmmakers, each representing a different continent (North America, South America, Europe, Africa and Asia [including Australia]) to receive a $5000 filmmakers grant to both reward outstanding achievement and provide support for these filmmakers to continue making films. In addition, Participant will invite all the filmmakers whose films appear on Pangea Day to submit a treatment for a feature film or documentary. Participant will then reward one winner with the "Filmmaker Grant" which includes $20,000 to continue the development of the treatment and a non-binding first look deal with Participant for the treatment.

Film Marketing Workshop: Guerrilla Marketing and Self-Distribution of your Film
Saturday, February 9th from 9:00 AM - 1:00 PM - Hollywood, FL

In partnership with The Broward Film Commission

Independent filmmaking is alive and well, its independent distribution that is dead. At a time when "independent" films have to have a star and at least a couple million-dollar budget, how do you get your films seen? Forget Sundance, Miramax, and HBO. These places get hundreds of submissions a year. How do you get your films seen?

From getting free media coverage to myspace, to film festivals and selling your productions through the Internet and DVD. Alex Ferrari gives you a street-level instruction and real-world examples on how to promote, distribute, and sell your production. He challenges you to assess the real market for your film and provides examples of other filmmakers getting their work out, after their films were turned down by traditional distributors.

Independent producer/director Alex Ferrari’s award-winning short film “BROKEN” (http://www.whatisbroken.com) has done the following using his marketing and self distribution techniques:

- Screened in over 140 international film festivals (85% of them without paying a submission fee)

- Had his $8000 Mini-DV short film reviewed by world renowned film critic Roger Ebert

- Self distributed the film on DVD and sold over 5000 units (@ $19.95) using only his website

- Attracted over 3 million unique visitors to the films website (nearly all for free)

- Has been reviewed or mentioned in over 350 world-wide news outlets including film industry juggernauts:

(Ain’t It Cool News, JoBlo.com, Dark Horizons.com, Latino Review.com, Yahoo News, Movies Online.ca)

- Garnered interest from major Hollywood film studios

- Spawned a book on the film “The Art of BROKEN”

Alex Ferrari (http://www.alexferrari.com) is a producer/director who has been making films for over 13 years, in addition to running his companies Numb Robot: Post Production/VFX (http://www.numbrobot.com) and The Enigma Factory: Production (http://www.enigmafactory.com).

The Promethean Theatre (TPT) announces its next production of Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz’s Two Sisters and a Piano. Cruz's haunting and lyrical script transports us into the lives of two sisters who have been imprisoned in their own house as a result of speaking out against a repressive political regime. Directed by TPT’s Resident Director Margaret M. Ledford with dramaturgy by Jane G. Duncan, TPT Artistic Associate. Mr. Cruz will be leading talk back discussions about his play with the cast at selected performances opening weekend.

Performance dates and times of those talkbacks to be announced shortly.

About The Play…

Maria Celia and her sister Sofia, under house arrest in their family home, take refuge in their writing and music. For these two passionate, artistic siblings, their punishment is an excruciating test of the soul. When political censorship denies Maria Celia her husband’s love letters, Lieutenant Portuondo, who oversees their sentence offers to read them to her, but at a price. In this piercing and passionate play, this Pulitzer Prize-winning, Cuban-born playwright deftly shows audiences the intimate joys and sorrows of one family in a fascinating, politically charged country.
