Gala Opening of Nordstrom in Aventura

Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m.

The long-awaited opening of Nordstrom's in Aventura will benefit three local charities: Junior League of Miami, The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis/The Miami Project at UM, and UM's Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. The event, entirely underwritten by Nordstrom, will offer cocktails and hors d'oeuvres, dinner and desserts, live entertainment and "sneak-peek" shopping in the new 165,000 square foot specialty store. Guests will be treated to a theatrical runway fashion show featuring spring designer collections in a tent adjacent to the store. Gala co-chairs are Pennie and Gary Abramson, Marc Buoniconti, Nick Buoniconti, Barth A. Green, M.D. and Erin Knight. Tickets are $125. The store opens to the public on Friday, February 15.

Annual Yonit Gala Dinner

Wednesday, February 13 at 7 p.m.

In celebration of the State of Israel's 60th Anniversary, Nobel Prize Laureate Elie Wiesel and violinist Pinchas Zukerman will join WIZO in honoring impresario of classical music and dance, Judy Drucker. Holocaust survivor, humanitarian and author of more than 40 works of fiction and non-fiction, Wiesel will present Drucker with the Joseph Handleman Light of Philanthropy Award. Israeli-born Zukerman, who with cellist Amanda Forsyth and pianist Shoko Inoue, will honor Judy and guests with a performance suitable to the occasion, marking a long-time professional relationship and friendship between the two.

Downtown Hollywood International Film Series

Thursday, February 14 at 7 p.m.

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and Downtown Hollywood invite you to enjoy "Manual of Love II," a subtitled Italian movie, screened outdoors at ArtsPark. This month's film follows the stories of Nicola, paralyzed after a car crash, who falls in love with his physiotherapist, Lucia; Franco and Manuela, a young couple unable to have child, who fly to Barcelona for a specialized fertility treatment; Filippo and Fosco, two gay men who decide to marry; and Ernesto, a waiter in an upscale restaurant, and his liaison with Cecilia, the new, young kitchen helper. Foreign films are screened the second Thursday of every month. Admission is free.

Valentine's Day Concert

Thursday, February 14 at 7 p.m.

Bring a blanket, a picnic basket and your special someone for Fairchild Garden's annual Valentine's Day concert. Nicole Henry and the 18-piece Florida International University Big Band, under the direction of Dr. Sam L. Lussier, Director of Jazz Ensembles, will perform jazz favorites for a romantic evening amid Fairchild's stunning landscape and the modern sculptures by pop artist Roy Lichtenstein. Gourmet picnic baskets are also available at Creative Tastes (305-256-8399). Concert is on rain or shine. Tickets are $45 for Fairchild members, $60 for non-members; $15 for children 6-17. Women's Heart Health Fair 2008

Friday, February 15 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

United Way of Miami-Dade and the Sister-to-Sister Foundation present a free and informative health fair for women featuring lifestyle presentations, cutting-edge information on medical issues of importance to women and their families, and complimentary heart-health screenings with on-the-spot results. Miami Science Museum's 6th Annual Gala

Friday, February 15 at 7 p.m.

"Building the Future" is the theme of this year's Miami Science Museum Dinner-Dance, presented by its Board of Trustees. Funds from the gala and the live and silent auctions will be dedicated to the planning and development of the new museum facility located in downtown Miami's Museum Park. Gala Chairs Robert and Brenda Nestor Castellano and Paul and Swanee DiMare have planned a glamorous night with dinner and dancing to the music of the Peter Duchin Orchestra. Guests will honor Victor M. Alvarez, who will be presented with an award at the gala.

"Savoy Style"

New World School of the Arts presents its annual fashion show and benefit brunch organized by the Dance Division and high school student parents. The show highlights the latest fashion trends, incorporating high-energy dance numbers performed by the students and inspired by New York's Savoy Ballroom. The event honors former principal Ellery Brown, and proceeds will be used for costumes, choreography and guest teachers at NWSA. Tickets are $50.
