THIS WEEK AT THE WOLFSONIAN-FIU
INNOVATION BY DESIGN SERIES
Join us for a series of presentations in which leading voices in design, science, and technology explore the meaning of innovation.
Thursday, March 26, 7pm
WHEN YOU MEET THE EXPECTATIONS OF WOMEN, YOU EXCEED THE EXPECTATIONS OF MEN—The title of this talk, spoken by a marketing expert in 2001, inspired Volvo to create "Your Concept Car" (YCC), designed by a team of women and introduced in 2004. Tatiana Butovitsch Temm, communications manager for the Volvo YCC design team, reflects on design, gender, and consumption. Copresented by FIU's European Studies Program and Women's Studies Center and the FIU/UM Miami-Florida European Union Center for Excellence. Free and open to the public.
DOCUMENTARY SERIES: TECHNOLOGY AND THE HUMAN CONDITION
explores the impact of technology on our lives. Curated by Michael Laramee, a graduate student in Film Studies at the University of Miami, it is cosponsored by FIU's Jack D. Gordon Institute for Public Policy and Citizenship Studies.
Friday, March 27, 7pm
WHY WE FIGHT (2005, USA, Eugene Jarecki, 98 min, color, DVD)—Why do we go to war? This documentary looks at U.S. policies regarding war since World War II, including the Iraq war, and poses the topic "Why We Fight" to several individuals. It then reflects back on President Eisenhower's warning, upon leaving office, of the growing power of the "military industrial complex," foretelling today's entangled political, corporate, and military interests. Free to members and students; $10 all others.
Think, Shop, and Eat at The Dynamo Museum Shop and Café!
Stop by The Dynamo Museum Shop and Café for some unusual gifts and creative food this week. The Dynamo Museum Shop offers a selection of carefully selected, unconventional gifts, books, and films, much of it inspired by The Wolfsonian's collection of modern objects from 1885-1945. The Dynamo Café features a sophisticated menu in a casual and artfully designed setting, also inspired by the themes of the museum's collection. For questions contact 305.535.2680 or paola@thewolf.fiu.edu.
