Zombie Land Luau
This Sunday, noon to 8pm, South Seas Hotel: 1751 Collins Ave, South Beach; 305.538.1411
Creative, economical alternatives to the norm can make plenty of sense (electric cars, living with your girlfriend), or just really suck (crack cocaine, living with your girlfriend). For a Sunday afternoon party choke-slamming the status quo with a giant dead pig: Zombie Land.
ZL's a new weekly party that counters the showiness and price tag of some of the longstanding Collins Ave pool gigs with a $15 all-you-can-eat luau that stars a whole roasted pig (a la La Caja China), traditional Hawaiian spread of poi (mashed taro) and grilled veggies, random rounds of free shots, and half-price ($5) Zombie Juice: double-distilled Moleca Cachaca w/ a tropical punch formula held in secrecy by promoter and luminary, the "Haitian Hillbilly". The party zone includes the South Seas' pool and chaise lounge-saturated patio, but food/booze is closer to the beach in a palm tree grove blessed with hammocks, tables, and access to the boardwalk and ocean, so you can conveniently dig a hole, put some pig back in the ground, and take another pass at the carcass. Tunes are rocked by the Hillbilly himself, who earned his name ground-breakingly playing country on his Haitian radio program, and'll feature his collection of 70s punk, rare surf instrumentals, Mexican garage psych from the 60s, and Japanese salsa and surf rock -- because even the Hillbilly realized country's the worst.
If you're not into the Zombie Juice, there's also 2-for-1 cans o' beer, and a gratis cocktail if you show up on a bike or skateboard -- a cash-saving alternative to the status quo of DUI, if you don't mind the likely cost of facial reconstruction.
