Learn to craft a travel story, write a song, or blog like a pro this fall with the help of the Florida Center for the Literary Arts’ Fall Creative Writing Courses, taught by talented writers, editors and professors.


My Aim is True: How to Create Creative Non-Fiction with Emma Trellis
Wednesdays, Sept. 16 – Nov. 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
$170
Each week in class, students will read some of the brightest contemporary creative writers and discuss what makes their works shine. Then they will write their own prose pieces, which will range in focus, including place and travel, memoir, art, and sundry objects worthy of study. A local author will be invited to read his work and speak about the craft.

Writing the World—Creating Travel Stories with Tom Swick
Wednesdays, Sept. 16 – Nov. 4, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
$170
This class looks at the different steps in writing a travel story: research before the trip, research while on site and writing. It shows students how to turn their trips - or even explorations of their county - into evocative narratives. The focus will be on the elements essential to a good travel story, such as personal voice, point of view, imagination, continuity, etc.

The New New Journalism: Blogging and Social Media with Alex de Carvahlo
Tuesdays, Sept. 15 – Nov. 3, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
$170

This class will cover the technical and marketing aspects of launching yourself or your business online through a blog, Twitter, and related social tools. Between the weekly scheduled class meetings, the course’s discussion will continue in a variety of online environments. Those who complete this course will know how to use blogs, tags, social networks, Twitter, and Flickr productively.

Making the Scene with Nick Garnett
Saturdays, Sept. 19 – Nov. 7, 10 a.m.-12 p.m.
$170
For writers of all experience levels, this class will cover the components of scene: description, dialogue, point-of-view, action, characterization, and voice. Participants will analyze scenes written by a wide variety of writers (even the movies!) and critique each other’s work. Whether writing fiction, memoir, or nonfiction, learn how to create scenes that propel a story and keep readers turning the page.

Write that Tune—Songwriting 101 with Ben Lauren
Mondays, Sept. 14 – Nov. 2, 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m.
$170
This class will explore various elements of songwriting and focus on developing song ideas. Discussion will include lyrics, melody, "hooks", and structure. Students will give and receive feedback and perform their own songs, either with live accompaniment or a pre-recorded track in cassette or CD format. The course concludes with a concert for friends and family featuring the student’s newly created songs.

The Building Blocks of Great Screenwriting with Ben Odell (TWO-DAY COURSE)
Friday, Sept. 18, 6 - 9 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 19, 9 a.m.- 2 p.m.
$100

This intensive, eight-hour master class covers the essential elements of screenplays from structure to character development, dialogue and beyond. Using clips from feature and short films as examples, the story structure is broken down to its simplest form. Class will also discuss strategies to break into the industry, including how to format a script, seek representation and get the work to producers.
