ON VIEW

BEAUTY ON THE BEACH: A CENTENNIAL CELEBRATION OF SWIMWEAR
ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 11, 2009

Beauty on the Beach: A Centennial Celebration of Swimwear explores the role that fashion design plays in shaping and reflecting popular conceptions of glamour and health through an examination of innovations in swimwear design—in construction, materials, and styling—as well as creative marketing strategies. The exhibition features archival materials from the Jantzen swimwear company—celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2010—and The Wolfsonian collection. Included in the display are a large variety of swimsuits, bathing caps, accessories, illustration art, advertising, and promotional materials.

SUN STROKE STIMULUS
ON VIEW THROUGH OCTOBER 11, 2009 IN THE MUSEUM'S LOBBY

The Wolfsonian commissioned New York City based photographer Miles Ladin to create Sun Stroke Stimulus, a contemporary portrait of Miami Beach bathing culture, to complement its summer 2009 exhibition of historical swimwear. Miles Ladin's fashion photography has been featured in The New York Times Style section, W magazine, and Harper's Bazaar. He has created two limited-edition artist's books—Lunch Poems and That Various Field: A Salute to James Schulyer. Noted for his critical view of everyday life, Ladin's work is included in the collections of The Victoria & Albert Museum, London; the Artist Book Collection, The Museum of Modern Art Library, New York; and the Special Collection Library at The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

YOUTH IN UNIFORM: SELECTIONS FROM MATERIALS DONATED BY STEVEN HELLER
ON VIEW IN THE MUSEUM'S RARE BOOK AND SPECIAL COLLECTIONS LIBRARY VESTIBULE

The exhibition features political propaganda designed to create a spirit of communal identity among the young. The materials were collected by Steven Heller during research for his recent publication Iron Fists: Branding the 20th Century Totalitarian State.

ART AND DESIGN IN THE MODERN AGE: SELECTIONS FROM THE WOLFSONIAN COLLECTION
ONGOING

The Wolfsonian–FIU holds an astounding collection of modern objects—both the rare and the overlooked — from the 1885 to 1945 era, demonstrating the active role design plays in motivating actions, expressing ideas, creating desires, and shaping identities. Exhibition themes underscore designers' responses to new materials and technologies, the role of graphic design as an instrument of political and commercial persuasion, and the nature of state-sponsored public art and architecture programs.

UPCOMING EVENTS

FILM SERIES
A LOOK BEHIND THE CURTAIN: TWENTY YEARS AFTER THE FALL
November 9, 1989 marked the fall of the Berlin Wall after over forty years of the Cold War. This film series, commemorating the twenty year anniversary of those dramatic events, explores the feelings and social realities experienced during the last days of communism passing through the unsettling months of transition to the new era of consumerism and democracy. Reflecting the filmmakers' visions of the individual in the throes of revolutionary social upheaval, these films depict human struggle in the context of oppression and radical change. Presented with the FIU School of International & Public Affairs, the FIU European Studies Department, and the Miami European Union Center of Excellence (MEUCE). Free for members and students; $10 all others or $30 for the series.

Thursday, October 8, 7pm
COMMUNISM ON FILM—This kick-off event sets the stage as Barbara Weitz, director of the Czech Study Abroad Program and the Film Studies Certificate Program at FIU, briefly addresses the communist influence on cinema along with the screening of two documentaries: The Wall (1962, USA, US Information Agency, 9 min, B&W, web video streaming) and Videograms of a Revolution. From the holdings of the National Archives, this short propaganda film shows the construction of the Berlin Wall and how it immediately impacted those living on both sides of the wall. In Videograms of a Revolution (1992, Romania, Harun Farocki and Andrei Ujica, 107 min, German with English subtitles, color, DVD) directors Farocki and Ujica piece together the ten-day fall of the Romanian leader Nicolai Ceaucescu in 1989 using 125 hours of footage.
