MIAMI BEACH – The New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy (NWS), will perform in the first of two Symphony with a Splash performances this season, titled Made in America, on Saturday, January 19, 8:00 P.M. at the Lincoln Theatre (541 Lincoln Road).

The hour-long performance, which will feature works by famed American composers George Gershwin and Samuel Barber, will include both performance and explanation, a format that artistic director Michael Tilson Thomas has made famous with his highly acclaimed educational series Keeping Score. In addition, the performance will be preceded by a complimentary 1 ½ hour cocktail hour sponsored by Chopin Vodka, beginning at 6:30 P.M., in the lobby of the Lincoln Theatre.

Symphony with a Splash began three years ago as a way of attracting young professionals to the concert hall, presenting popular classical works with film projections and behind-the-scenes explanations about the music, and providing an opportunity to network with others in the community. Since then, thousands of patrons, many who had never before attended a classical music concert, have had the music’s “secrets” revealed, and many return regularly for Splash and other performances.

Aundi Marie Moore, a soprano from Virginia, is in her second season with the Domingo-Cafritz. Young Artist Program with the Washington National Opera. She has participated in young artist programs with the Chautauqua Opera Company, La Musica Lirica and Centro Studi Lirica in Italy. A Marian Anderson Scholar, Ms. Moore has been a finalist in the Metropolitan Opera District Auditions, West Palm Beach Vocal Competition, Leontyne Price Vocal Competition, and the Paul Robeson Vocal Competition and won second place in the 2007 Florida Grand Opera Vocal Competition.

Described as an “eloquent and decisive” conductor by the Wall Street Journal and praised for his “uncommonly expressive and detailed performances” by the Miami Herald, Steven Jarvi has become recognized as an extraordinary talent with an equal passion for the concert hall and the opera house. Mr. Jarvi is currently the Conducting Fellow for the New World Symphony in Miami and an Associate Conductor for the New York City Opera at Lincoln Center.

During the past two seasons, Mr. Jarvi has joined the NWS to share subscription concerts with Roberto Abbado, Marin Alsop and Michael Tilson Thomas, has served as a cover conductor for the Los Angeles Philharmonic, and conducted the Helsinki Philharmonic as a competitor in the 3rd Sibelius International Conducting Competition in Helsinki, Finland. As an avid supporter of music education and community outreach, he also leads the Concerts for Kids, Education Concerts and Community Appreciation Concerts with the New World

Friends of New World Symphony, an NWS membership / support group will also hold its January event in conjunction with the SWAS performance. Following the performance, Friends members will convene for a post-performance event at La Marea at The Tides South Beach, free for Friends of NWS members. Hailed as “the best new restaurant in Miami” by Miami SunPost, La Marea presents Mediterranean-style cuisine accented with Northern Italian flavors under the direction of Executive Chef Pietro Rota. Enchanting environments created by Kelly Wearstler feature warm sunset hues, organic materials, rich textures, and vintage-inspired elements over the property’s historic base, while the expansive terrace provides dramatic ocean views while dining alfresco.

For Friends information or to attend the post-performance event please contact Stacey Glassman at 305-673-3330, ext. 230.
