New Restaurant- Ratatouille
Ratatouille Opens
You saw London. You saw France. You saw Suzette’s underpants. (Ah, studying abroad.)
Relive those romantic times at Ratatouille, the French Mediterranean bistro that recently opened in South Beach.
Co-owners David Meunier and Dominique Tordion, of Cafe Maurice fame, offer provincial portions and handpicked wines affordable on a peasant’s pay (a well-paid peasant).
Chef Gerard Chauvet, le superstar of Cote d’Azur, focuses the menu on fresh fish like salmon, sea bass, and snapper. Fear not the mostly French chalkboard menu: If you unwittingly order a whole fish, like the grilled dorade, the helpful staff will give it a tableside deboning. (How Parisian!)
Wine bottles and vintage posters line the front room. And the candlelit back patio is perfect for a ménage à trios — starring you, your lover, and the île flottante (whipped meringue) dessert.
Not quite like college, but pretty close.
Ratatouille, 821 Washington Avenue, Miami Beach (786-276-3580).

Let's prevent the next real estate nightmare
PLEASE forward this petition to Floridians in your address book. Unpaid condo association fees (due to foreclosures and empty units) are Miami’s next big impending economic disaster, so we need to get the attention of the governor and legislators to place some of this burden back on the banks that caused these problems to begin with, thanks to their faulty lending practices.

Great New World Symphony event May 10. 2008 Join Now!
Friends of New World Symphony, the award-winning, hip patron-support group of the New World Symphony and arts supporters Beau Beasley and Elliot Monter along with Miami Modern Luxury and Carmel Ophir will celebrate an eclectic night of music on Saturday, May 10 at the funky-chic new venue, The Vagabond from 8- 11pm.
A performance at 9:00 P.M. by NWS Fellows will feature classical, blues, reggae, rock, funk and house music.

In addition, singer Fitzroy, bass player Buffalo and the NWS musicians will fuse the rootsy- vibe of island soul with elements of classical, and hip-hop. This ensemble will perform hits from Fitzroy’s album, “Her” and “When the Ground Falls.”
We will bring out the funk with long-time favorite, “Staying Alive,” written and arranged by NWS Trumpet Fellow Sam Hyken.
Baby Bam, of the seminal hip-house group the Jungle Brothers, will emcee songs from his new album, including "Girl I'll House You," a fun, danceable record conveying a positive, feel-good vibe consistent with his energetic, magnetic personality and stage presence.

Cannes Film Festival Palm d’Or Winner 2007:
4 months, 3 weeks, & 2 days
(4 luni, 3 saptamâni, si 2 zile)
(Cristian Mungiu/Romania/2007)
In the most critically acclaimed film of the year, Otilia and Găbiţă share the
same room in a student dormitory. They are colleagues at the University in
this small town in Romania, during the last years of communism. Otilia rents
a room in a cheap hotel. In the afternoon, they are going to meet a certain Mr.
Bebe. Găbiţă is pregnant, abortion is illegal and neither of them have passed
through something like this before.4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days belongs to a
larger project called: Tales from the Golden Age - a subjective history of
communism in Romania told through its urban legends. The project's aim is
to talk about that period with no direct reference to communism but only
through different stories focused on personal options in a time of misfortunes
that people had to live like normal times.4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days is the
first film of the series.

07 WED 8:30pm:
On The Edge: The Films of DEREK JARMAN
Jubilee (1977)
With Nell Campbell (“Little Nell”), Adam Ant, Jenny Runacre, Richard O’Brien
Original music by Brian Eno
Simultaneously ugly and beautiful, Jubilee is not just about punk kids in the UK,
but made by the rebellious and yet intellectual artists who were as anti-establishment
as their subjects. Surreal and fanciful, set to sounds of Brian Eno, in the formative
years of Adam Ant and future Rocky Horror stars, Derek Jarman dares to bring to
the screen both a punk and not-so-punk viewpoint of anti-Thatcher British politics.
Jublilee is an autobiographical street expression...
"In Jubilee all the positives are negated, turned on their heads. Its dream imagery
drifts uncomfortably on the edge of reality. . .Afterwards, the film turned prophetic,
Dr Dee's vision came true - the streets burned in Brixton and Toxteth, Adam was
Top of the Pops and signed up with Margaret Thatcher to sing at the Falklands
Ball. They all sign up one way or another."—Derek Jarman
08 THU 8:30pm: “MUSIC on FILM” #1:
The Ballad of Peter LaFarge
(Docemntary, 32min/Sandra Schulman/2007)
Florida Premiere!
Peter LaFarge was a shooting star -- an unsung hero at the crossroads of folk,
protest music, country, blues and love songs. He was a rodeo cowboy, an actor,
a singer and songwriter. He was a husband, a father, and a drug user. He was a
pioneering folk singer in 1960s Greenwich Village and the first to gain national
prominence singing about the plight of Native Americans. He knew the admiration
and friendship of Bob Dylan and Johnny Cash. But that wasn't enough to sustain
him. His story is a hard one and a sad one -- a ballad worthy of the traditions he revered.
WINNER: BMI-Woody Guthrie Foundation 2008 Fellowship
Nominated: Best Documentary AIFI San Francisco, Westchester Film Festival
“Discovering that most of the available "facts" about LaFarge were wrong,
Schulman set out making a short film. . ."The Ballad of Peter LaFarge" surveys
the musician's life -- his privileged upbringing as the son of Pulitzer-winning
novelist Oliver LaFarge, his work as an actor and rodeo rider, his meteoric folk
career -- coolly and briskly through a photo montage and narration.”
—Chris Morris, Hollywood Reporter
The Film will be introduced and followed by a Q&A with director
Sandra Schulman, followed by a reception and afterparty
at GEMMA LOUNGE hosted by John Hood.

The stories of three disparate women intersect at a Tel Aviv wedding. Newly
single Batiya (Sarah Adler) works with the catering crew; Filipina Joy (Ma-
nenita De Latorre) attends the event as the caregiver of an elderly woman;
and the bride (Noa Knoller) sees her honeymoon dreams go up in smoke.
Directed by the popular Israeli novelist Etger Keret and his screenwriter wife,
Shira Geffen, the film has won international acclaim for its whimsical intimacy,
including the Camera d’Or at Cannes.

“This is a movie about the gulf between parents and children, between lovers,
between friends and even between adults and the children they wish they could
still be. But it is also about the irreducible oddness of being alive. . .It is not about
politics or war or national identity, which for a movie from Israel is a surprise and
also something of a relief. Not that Mr. Keret and Ms. Geffen seem at all disengaged
from the world and its troubles. They are, rather, concerned with a stranger,
but also more intimately familiar, set of problems.”—A.O Scott New York Times

Edward II (1991)
“A classic tale of sex, revenge, and love”
With Steven Waddington, Nigel Terry, Tilda Swinton
Cameo by Annie Lennox, costume design by Sandy Powell
Bringing an Elizabethan drama of 1592 (based on a Christoper Marlowe play)
into the present is no simple task, but if anyone can do it Derek Jarman can,
and he felt it his duty. Edward II covers the controversial and “out” king’s life
in all its glory, and his fall from grace, complete with period language, but in a
modern setting. Tilda Swinton once again plays the female that gets in the way
of a successful career of being gay, as Princess Isabella to Steven Waddington’s
King Edward. Elegant and minimalist in a shoestring budget realm of art,
Jarman’s visual aesthetic is at its best, and most accessible.

Counting Headz: South Africa’s Sisters in Hip Hop
(Erin Offer/South Africa/2007)
Counting Headz, South Africa's Sistaz in Hip Hop, is
a labor of love showing the "love-hate-relationship" a lot of women have with hip
hop due to the fact "that most people still aren't over that a woman can do stuff
as well." It portrays DJs, writers and MCs/singers based in South Africa and gives
them the opportunity to talk about their struggle with stereotypes - as one of the
interviewees puts it "if the whole network is male it gets hard for a woman to enter
the industry". Hard doesn't mean impossible, though, with some fighting skills and
a lot of dedication, quite a few women still stick to their mission. The documentary
shows them in action but also tries to portray their more personal sides and opinions
on religion and family. All in all: a must see.

Wittgenstein (1993)
With Clancey Chassay, Karl Johnson, Sally Dexter, Tilda Swinton
Costume Design by Sandy Powell
Derek Jarman’s world on film is always somewhere between theatre and cinema,
and the philosophies of one of the 20th century’s most influential minds is right at
home in that format. Wittgenstein the philosopher, the self-tortured eccentric, who
preferred detective fiction and the musicals of Carmen Miranda to Aristotle, is a
fitting subject for Jarman’s irreverent imagination. With childhood memories defining
the playschool characters that make up a tempera painted world in Wittgenstein,
Jarman mixes a playful mood with the outrageous intellectualism, in a stunning,
minimalist (pre-Dogville), and profound work about modern philosophy and the
dark genius that revolutionized it.

The Other Side of the Mirror: Bob Dylan
Live at the Newport Folk Festival
(Murray Lerner/USA/2007) 80 minutes
With Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Judy Collins, Pete Seeger
Academy Award winning filmmaker Murray Lerner captured the spirit of the era
at the Newport Folk Festival, as well as the extraordinary music produced on its
stage, in his woefully neglected Festival! (1967). Now Lerner has gone back to
his Newport footage and crafted a revealing portrait of the young Bob Dylan during
the crucial period of 1963-65, as he grows progressively darker and more withdrawn
and he and his band take their first steps toward rock and roll. The film features
stirring versions of some of his most famous songs, including some legendary duets
with Joan Baez. A great document of an extraordinary artist!
“If you were not at the Newport Folk Festival in the ’60s — or, for that matter,
if you were — “The Other Side of the Mirror” places you in perfect seats, out
of the sun and wind and without any extraneous contextualization. It’s a
remarkably pure and powerful documentary, partly because it’s so simple.
The sound mix is crisp, the black-and-white photography is lovely, and the
songs, above all, can be heard in all their earnest, enigmatic glory, performed
by an artist whose gifts are at once mysterious and self-evident.”

larger project called: Tales from the Golden Age - a subjective history of
communism in Romania told through its urban legends. The project's aim is
to talk about that period with no direct reference to communism but only
through different stories focused on personal options in a time of misfortunes
that people had to live like normal times.4 months, 3 weeks & 2 days is the

Throw Momma on the Gravy Train
2008 Mother’s Day Guide
She spent eight hours birthing you (ew) and you made her a macaroni necklace. Step it up.
When you were 6 …
You took her Louboutins into the tub (they didn’t float). Make amends. The Angler’s Boutique Resort’s (660 Washington Avenue; 305-534-9600) Mother’s Day package includes Saturday night at a poolside villa, authentic Parisian brunch at très fab Maison d’Azur, and 15 percent off custom sandals at Tuccia di Capri (1630 Pennsylvania Avenue; 305-534-5865).
When you were 18 …
You moved to Paris in the wake of your artiste lover. She’s still tense. Send her to the luxe Guerlain Spa. The 10,000-square-foot space in The Regent Bal Harbour (10295 Collins Avenue, Bal Harbour; 305-455-5400) houses a waterfall and bamboo floors. For moms: a facial, body therapy, massage, and 90-minute gift card (when booking another treatment on appointment day).
When you were 4 …
You refused food that wasn’t beige. Show off your sophisticated palate: Take her to brunch at Blue Door at The Delano (1685 Collins Avenue; 305-672-2000). The decadent spread involves a raw bar, sushi, a carving station, dim sum, and traditional breakfast. Moms receive a complimentary glass of morning booze and chocolates from Harney & Sons Tea.
When you were 7 …
She sat through your turn as Tree Two in the school play. Twice. Treat her to some theater — or, at least, the uproarious singing puppets of Avenue Q. The bawdy off-Broadway show arrives at The Arsht Center (1300 Biscayne Boulevard; 305-949-6722) on May 13. Give her tickets the Sunday before.
When you were 2 …
Was only yesterday. Treat a newish mom to the The Ritz South Beach’s (1 Lincoln Road; 786-276-4000) Miami Mommy package. Frazzled mothers receive a 50-minute massage or facial, Carita hand and foot treatment, and a spa gift bag flush with products. All the while, her screaming tot is pampered at the Ritz Kids, a child care center.
When you were 13 …
You had the flu — all over her favorite shirt. Overcompensate with brunch at The Tides’s restaurant La Marea (1220 Ocean Drive; 305-604-5070), where the mimosas flow freely and mothers receive a gift bag with a $150 gift certificate to local designer Rene Ruiz (2700 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Coral Gables; 305-445-2352).
When you were 9 …
You traded her antique brooch for a Ring Pop. You owe her something sparkly. The Design District’s recently opened jewelry boutique Turchin Love & Light (130 Northeast 40th Street; 305-573-7117) offers 10 percent off one-of-a-kind Mom’s Day gifts like a gold and black diamond bangle that’s been blessed by a local Buddhist lama.

On The Edge:
The Films of DEREK JARMAN
Caravaggio (Derek JarmanUK/1986/90 mins.
With Dexter Fletcher, Tilda Swinton, Nigel Terry
In this groundbreaking work of historic homoerotism, director Derek
Jarman uses the painterly aesthetic style of his famous subject to reflect the
story of art, homosexuality, and identity. The film is like a painting itself,
mirroring the nearly blasphemous works of the seventeenth century artist
who flirted with the underworld and created a complex mix of violence and
sex on canvas. In a life of poverty, young, beautiful Caravaggio (played by
Dexter Fletcher) falls into a scandalous and controversial method of working,
surrounding himself with models who are gamblers, prostitutes, and schemers.
One such prostitute, Lena (played by Academy Award winner Tilda Swinton)
adds complications to his life by becoming deeply involved in his affairs..
WINNER: Berlin Int. Film Festival (for its visual shaping)
Istanbul Int. Film Festival Special Jury Prize
Followed by the Opening Night Reception of
The MBC April-May Photography Exhibition:
Travesti Extraordinaire by Lesly Hamilton
with Glitterbug (1994)
A posthumous montage tribute by Jarman's colleagues,
set to the music of Brian Eno
Travesti Extraordinaire portrays the sublimation of identity. It is the gaining of a
new power, through a mask or make-up by male or female, specifically creating a
means of seduction. It is a disguise of sorts where charm and eroticism combine,
excelling in glamour; an extravagant game which has for so long sustained in my
mind a fascinating mystery! Lesly Hamilton
Film and Artist Reception to follow: $10 and $6 MBC Members
(FILM: 7:45pm, Reception 10pm)
27 SUN 8pm: DOCUSPAIN Season Finale!
Memory Train (El tren de la memoria)
(Marta Arribas and Ana Perez/Spain 2006)
A sensitive and thought-provoking documentary that artfully weaves
interviews and extraordinary historical footage to tell the story of a hidden
part of European history, Memory Train concerns the officially sanctioned
mass exodus of some two million Spaniards to work in European factories.
Every DOCUSPAIN film will be followed by an afterparty at
Tapas y Tintos, featuring LIVE Flamenco, complimentary tapas
and MAHOU beer for filmgoers!
MGLFF Official Screening:
MAY 02 FRI 10:15pm: Voodoo Woman
(Documentary/Directed by Carolina Valencia/Canada/Cuba, 2008/ 50 min)
U.S.A Premiere! 2nd screening added!
(8:30pm screening SOLD OUT!)
Independent filmmaker Carlos Valencia has a date with destiny. While
searching for new film ideas, Carlos turns to the Island of Cuba, to
document the underground worlds of hip-hop music and gay life. Shooting
in Cuba he encounters the Afro-Caribbean religion known as Santeria.
Shrouded in secrecy and unaltered centuries-old traditions, Carlos and his
camera enter filmmaker heaven as they gain unprecedented access into the
occult faith's world of animal sacrifices (graphically depicted) and
speaking in tongues. In English and Spanish with English subtitles
Director/subject Carolina Valencia will attend the screening to
discuss the film with the audience.

Looking for sponsors
My friend carson is looking for sponsors for the event described below for Sea of Flame International Artists. It is on April 23. I thought of you guys - since you're the A-team!! I've copied Carson above, so feel free to contact her directly. She has a great personality and very involved in the local art community.
My warm regards,
Marc
Our current sponsors:
Urban Icons and Alan Solis will provide Hennessey Mojitos,
Bawls will provide their energy drink, and
Stoai Outdoor Concept's lights the event with their designs from Bali.
Location: Art Rouge Gallery of International Contemporary Art @ 46 nw 36th St Wynwood Art District Miami Florida
It is a fundraiser for SOFIA: Sea of Flame International Artists.
The event features an art exhibition and performance with live percussion and world music DJ. SOFIA's MAP of UOU is a wildly intuitive, live kinetic installation that merging music, art and dance into an interaction for the senses!
Music inspires my dance and painting. I paint with sea grass, rope, bare feet…; mix natural elements in paint; and paint on recycled glass, metal, and fabric. Live percussion releases instinct exciting the core of human spirit, inspiring us to reconnect with nature.
Recent performances:
Martin Solveig (internationally known French DJ) for Winter Music Conference 2008, the New World Symphony, Belo (famous Haitian singer), and 7 professional percussionists currently living in Miami playing African, Middle Eastern and Brazilian rhythms.
The guest list includes many high profile collectors. My personal list of about 385 locals, includes Carlos and Rosa de la Cruz, Craig Robins, Tony Goldman, Jose Perez of Related Group, the Bramans, the Scholls. I will also send to my international list of 3000+. The gallery has a list of 3000.
We have chosen an evening that is free of other big events on the Miami calendar, so attendance will assuredly be great. This is an rsvp event.
Sales of art works benefit SOFIA. We will also accept donations. This performance is also meant to market SOFIA's global project.
SOFIA (Sea of Flame International Artists)
www.sea-of-flame.org
SOFIA is a green community/gallery stimulating global responsibility. It begins with people: artists of all races, ethnicities or cultural identities. By encouraging collaboration between its members, SOFIA provides a communal space with subsidized materials, equipment, work/practice space, and a relational database as a proactive marketing tool. The goal: to provide the means for artists to work, exhibit and effectively market their art.
SOFIA’s vision is to promote societal change, consciousness and responsibility. It mandates artists’ projects to spur people to reconnect with nature and themselves, and challenge social constructs.
SOFIA engages a community of visionaries inspired to motivate and embody their vision with imaginative, thought-provoking concepts through regularly sponsor member forums and events in collaboration with humanitarian organizations focused on global enhancement, i.e. youth arts, social and environmental justice programs, and etc: such as Rush, eCombs, and others. We also collaborate with businesses that support our mission.
