2008 youngARTS Week Showcases

The National Foundation for Advancement in the Arts (NFAA) will host 150 aspiring young artists for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to participate in their youngARTS program. The public is invited to see this emerging young talent during a series of performance showcases.
Tuesday: Finalists in Jazz and Voice, 8 p.m., at Ransom Everglades (3575 Main Highway, Coconut Grove)
Wednesday: Finalists in Theater, 8 p.m., at Ransom
Thursday: Dance and Cinematic Arts, 8 p.m. at Ransom
Friday: Visual Arts and Photography, 7:30 p.m. at The Margulies Collection (591 N.W. 27th Street, Miami)
Saturday: Finalists in Writing, 10 a.m. at Marriott Miami Airport Hotel (1201 N.W. LeJeune Road, Miami)
Saturday: Finalists in Music at 1 p.m. at UM Gusman Hall (1314 Miller Drive, Coral Gables).
All performances and exhibitions are free and open to the public.

Reflections: Impressions of Ravel

January 9 at 7:30 p.m.
Enjoy shimmering colors and exquisite harmonies through the lens of the great French composer, Maurice Ravel. Composed in 1914, Ravel's glorious Trio for violin, cello and piano is one of the most innovative compositions ever written for the piano trio. Gil Morgenstern, Artistic Director and violinist, has crafted an international program inspired in part by the Rubin Museum's exhibition of Tibetan Prayer Flags. Joining Gil Morgenstern will be cellist Edward Arron and pianist Jeewon Park. Part of the Arnold and Muriel Rosen Concert Series at Temple Israel, tickets are $20 and may be purchased in advance.

ArTalk Series with Enrique Martínez Celaya

January 9 at 8 p.m.
Miami Art Museum cosponsors this talk featuring Cuban-born artist Enrique Martínez Celaya and noted Miami art critic Alfredo Triff. They will discuss Nomad which documents Celaya's creative process during preparations for his current show at MAM. The 5 large-scale, oil and wax paintings that Celaya created for Nomad explore issues of exile and rootlessness. Alfredo Triff is a professor at Miami-Dade College and lecturer in modern and contemporary art history at the University of Miami.

The Steadfast Tin Soldier
January 11 – 13
The original toy story for ages 3 and up is presented by The PlayGround Theatre in five final performances in Miami-Dade County this year. The story, by Hans Christian Andersen, gives a peek into the playroom after the children go to sleep. See a brave toy soldier risk everything for the love of a beautiful ballerina. A wonderful show that the whole family will enjoy! Performances are Friday at 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.; Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m.; and Sunday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $15.

Fill Our Mouths by Lauren Feldman
January 10 – February 10
New Theatre presents Fill Our Mouths, by Lauren Feldman, the season's third World Premiere. Two young women meet in Paris: one is hearing; the other hard of hearing. Using spoken English and American Sign Language, Fill Our Mouths is a story of love and choice, deafness and hearing, the trials of communication, and the search for self. Gail Garrisan directs the cast which includes New Theatre veterans Caroline Edelen, Lela Elam (pictured) and Brandon Morris; and making their debuts at the theatre are Kim Ehly and Katherine Michelle Tanner. Preview is Jan 10 ($20); Pre-Opening Night is Jan 11 ($55 includes reception courtesy of Catering by Lovables); Performances are Thurs-Sat at 8 p.m., Sun at 1 and 5:30 p.m. - check schedule. Lichtenstein at Fairchild

Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden is hosting an exhibition of one of the world's most iconic Pop artists, Roy Lichtenstein. Fairchild, one of the world's premier botanic gardens and Miami-Dade County's oldest cultural institution, is hosting the large scale sculpture exhibition as part of its annual art program. With sculptures ranging from 8 to 30 feet high, Lichtenstein at Fairchild marks the largest sculptural exhibition of Lichtenstein's pieces in a naturalistic setting. Sculptures are on display daily from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. through May 31, 2008. Beginning December 13, Fairchild will remain open for Pop'n Tropical Nights on Thursday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Day admission is $20 adults, $15 seniors 65+, $10 children 6-17, and free for Fairchild members and children 5 and under. Night Admission is $20 Fairchild members, $15 member children 6-17; $30 non-members, $20 non-member children 6-17, and free for children 5 and under.
