International Film Series

Thursday, January 10 at 7 p.m.

Be the guest of the Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and Downtown Hollywood for this month's outdoor foreign film, a subtitled Czech movie: "Kolya." Franta Louka is a concert cellist in Soviet-occupied Czechoslovakia, a confirmed bachelor and a lady's man. Having lost his place in the state orchestra, he must make ends meet by playing at funerals and painting tombstones. A friend suggests a scheme for Louka to make a lot of money and pay off his debts by marrying a Russian woman so that she can get her Czech papers. He does, and she takes advantage of the situation by emigrating to West Germany to be with her lover, leaving her 5-year-old son with his grandmother. When the grandmother dies, Kolya must live with his stepfather, Louka. Showtime is 7 p.m., and admission is free.
