Actors' Playhouse Presents Page to Stage
The Winners have been announced and You are Invited!
Actors' Playhouse invites you to attend the complimentary readings of the two winning scripts chosen in our From Page to Stage competition, sponsored by Funding Arts Network.
Saturday June 7, 2008 at the Miracle Theatre
Readings will be held at 3 p.m and 7 p.m.
Unreasonable Doubt
&
When the Sun Shone Brighter
Unreasonable Doubt by Michael McKeever will be read at 3 p.m. Unable to touch the man who savagely murdered his daughter, Ty Bosworth does the next best thing: He kidnaps the lawyer who put the killer on the street. Revenge, redemption and blind justice all intersect in McKeever's thought-provoking drama.
When the Sun Shone Brighter by Christopher Demos-Brown will be presented at 7 p.m. In this new drama, Brown examines a political candidate's struggle between ambition and truth against the backdrop of the first terror attacks on U.S.-- not 9/11, but the Cuban-exile bombing campaign of the 1970s and 80s. This is a fascinating episode in American history that is virtually unknown outside of South Florida but is directly relevant to events that are shaping our political landscape today.
Share your thoughts about the play with the director and
the authors in a post-reading discussion led by industry professionals.
Please come and lend your opinion about these new works.
Tickets to this event are complimentary with reservations. Call 305.444.9293 ext. 600 or e-mail box@actorsplayhouse.org

New restaurant fr5om daily candy- Fratelli Lyon
May 28, 2008
Frat Party
Fratelli Lyon Opens
Hear ye, hear ye. Michael’s, pipe down. Brosia, quiet please. The assembly of Design District restaurants is called to order.
First item on the agenda: taking over Miami’s culinary scene. The newest development is the opening of Fratelli Lyon.
Secretary of the Palate approved the regional, Italian menu (heirloom legumes from Umbrian farmers, artisan goat’s milk cheeses from Piedmont, hand-bottled olive oils). He recommends the saffron risotto with osso bucco; house-made ravioli with herbed ricotta and brown butter; and Venetian-style sole with pickled onions, pinenuts, and raisins. Also: sides of fava puree and Swiss chard, or asparagus gratin.
Secretary of the Interior notes the eatery occupies the entrance to Driade’s showroom. The modern Italian furniture company collaborated on the glassware, flatware, furnishings, and accessories.
Lastly, Secretary of the Grapevine praises the exclusive Italian wine list and the sodas, which are made in house with fresh fruits and purees.
You may now raise your goblets.
Fratelli Lyon, 4141 Northeast Second Avenue (305-572-2901).

Disappearances, Shadows and Illusions
June 6 – September 21
Special installations by Miami artists, including Leyden Rodriquez-Casanova, Matt Schreiber and Tom Scicluna, together with selections from local collectors and MAM's permanent collection, will make up Disappearances, Shadows, and Illusions in MAM's Upper Level Gallery. Contrary to the usual expectations that artworks must embody enduring values and stand the test of time, the works in this exhibition use tricks of light, perspective, erasure, and other means to evoke a sense of impermanence and uncertainty. The exhibition will be on view at Miami Art Museum through September 21 and can be viewed Tuesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturday and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m.

In the Mountains of Colombia -- A Passion for Reading
Dear Friends,
Last week, I had the great fortune of trekking through rural villages in the mountains of Colombia and seeing impoverished campesinos receive the gift they had been awaiting for a very long time - an education.
During the month of May, Developing Minds Foundation sponsored a literacy project for over 1,000 families (about 5000 people in total) in villages dotting the provinces of San Pedro de los Milagros, Cañasgordas and Uramita. It is always chilling to hear stories from campesinos - peasants - living with fear and panic at the hands of guerrilla and paramilitary groups roaming the mountains; yet it is heartening that, while incidents still occur here, there is a gradual lifting of that fear as improved security continues to spread even in this hidden corner of Colombia.
And it is deeply inspiring to see in the weathered faces of these isolated mountain people the curiosity, imagination and joy as they discover a new world captured in the fascinating books they have received.
During our literacy workshops, the initially cautious families grow animated as they are guided on a journey by Pioquinto, the colorful instructor from our local partner Secretos Para Contar. Pioquinto has the packed schoolhouse abuzz, asks them to crack open their new books, pick out fascinating facts about butterflies, learn about the snow leopard, understand why flowers grow toward the sun, read a fable, sing a song, recite a poem, discover secrets, tell jokes. Their minds wander from Cañasgordas to Bogota, and then Paris and Shanghai. You can see a spark in their eyes. A passion for reading has been ignited.

Amazingly, for only $50 we can sponsor four entire families - about 20 people - to join the literacy project. The math works in our favor here. On our side, it's a quick click on the website and really not much to give up; but what a poor mountain family receives is profound and continues for a lifetime. Technically, a family receives a trilogy of beautiful books designed and written by a gifted group of Colombian writers and editors. But in human terms, the books sit at the center of the household and become the first true source of knowledge and inspiration for them. With few belongings in their simple mountain home, a family gravitates to the collection to read these captivating tales over and over again.
I would like to ask you to join us in this effort - now - by going to the Developing Minds website & making a contribution under donations at: www.developingmindsfoundation.org
Go ahead, take the three minutes of your time. It's the best $50 you'll spend for awhile. For any of us who feel a sense of shared humanity with people around the world, it is a great way to lift the human spirit. They need it, and we can give a little help.
Best,
Philippe Houdard

Instructor: Janell Walden Agyeman
Now that you have conceived your book idea and polished a complete fiction or nonfiction manuscript--or perhaps drafted a proposal--are you ready to become a published author? Join our workshop to learn how the publishing industry works and receive personalized guidance preparing your tools for finding the right agent and publisher. Weekly “anchor” lectures and individualized critiques of query letters, proposals and submission strategies provide students professional feedback while you create effective presentation tools.
Janell Walden Agyeman has been a literary agent with Marie Brown Associates Literary Services since 1993, representing authors of books for children and adults. A publishing industry veteran, she previously held editorial positions at Doubleday & Company and the Howard University Press and administered the Howard University Press Book Publishing Institute. “Say What?” Writing Good Dialogue
Six Tuesdays, June 3 – July 8, 2008, 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Nick Garnett
Dialogue is a powerful tool through which to convey and control characterization, tone, exposition, and pacing. It is also one of the most difficult (and often the last) writing techniques to be mastered. In this workshop, designed for writers of all experience levels, you’ll learn how to recognize, appreciate, and create effective dialogue and avoid the traps which can bring your story to a grinding halt. Through in-class and at-home exercises, examining the work of other writers, and critiquing your own writing, you’ll come away from this class with the skills necessary to make your dialogue work for your characters and your story.
Nick Garnett is currently revising his memoir, Straight Man—A Married Guy’s Journey to Fire Island and Back which is currently with a literary agent. He was recently accepted into FIU’s Creative Writing MFA program and has taught frequently for Miami Dade College’s Florida Center for the Literary Arts.
Poetry: A Short Course in English Metrics and Forms
Six Wednesdays, June 4 – July 9, 2008, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Michael Hettich
In this class we will examine the most commonly-employed metrical patterns in English poetry and attempt to understand how these patterns work to create the rhythms of vivid poetry. Additionally, we will examine a wide range of traditional poetic forms—from the sonnet and villanelle to the haibun and ghazal—in an attempt to understand how traditional poetry “works.” Each week we will examine sample poems, practice scansion, and listen for the rhythms of thought each poem enacts. Original writings in each of these forms will also be attempted, as a means of gaining full understanding.
Michael Hettich has published a dozen books and chapbooks of poetry, most recently Swimmer Dreams and Flock and Shadow: New and Selected Poems, both of which were published in 2005. His awards include The Tales Prize and Florida Arts Fellowships. Flock and Shadow was named a Book Sense Top Ten Pick in Poetry for 2006. He teaches at Miami Dade College.
Elements of Nonfiction—It’s Not What You Think
Six Thursdays, June 5 – July 10, 2008, 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Instructor: Elizabeth Hanly
“Nonfiction” as a category is bigger, better, richer than many of us imagine.
In this course we will explore the range of the genre focusing on those who created “new journalism”–Tom Wolfe, and Gay Talese–those who are working in the ground between Latin America, the Caribbean and The States–Richard Rodriguez and Edwidge Danticat–as well as less well-known writers who are pushing the genre still further, sometimes writing essays as free verse.
This course is designed to give those attending a wider range of choices, of colors if you will, with which to approach their own work.
Recommended text: The Next American Essay, edited by John D’Agata and published by Graywolf Press.
Elizabeth Hanly is a journalist focusing on Latin America, religion, and the arts. Her work has been published in a wide range of magazines and newspapers, including the New York Times and The Guardian of London. She has taught all levels of writing at FIU’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication and finds herself increasingly intrigued by the possibilities of creative nonfiction.
For more information, registration forms and fees, call (305) 237-3940 or visit www.flcenterlitarts.com.

Holding Out for Sex & the City
We hoped and prayed for a Sex & the City movie. And now that the premiere is only a few days away, we’re chomping at the proverbial bit. So, to hold us over, we’ve been stocking up on SATC-inspired merchandise. Check out some of our most recent fab findings:
Hello Lover — For emblazoned goodies including robes, hoodies, and yoga pants, visit HBO’s Hello Lover Shop. We love the stiletto tote bag for shoe-changing on the go. This is also a great place to pick up the Sex & the City Complete Series DVD set to catch up on all the drama before the movie hits theatres.
Power Lingerie — Now even your undergarments can say, “I’m SO the Carrie!” Cosabella recently released their SATC lingerie collection which includes, of course, four mini-collections dedicated to each character. Prices range from $22 to $162. And speaking of lingerie, in episode 69, the sexiest of the city girls Samantha breaks up with Richard and gives back the beautiful pearl thong he had given her (a “powerful” piece of lingerie). Want your own? No prob! Just visit Yandy.com and order yours for about $64.
Get me a Birkin! — Bag Borrow or Steal has dedicated a whole section on their site to the arm candy of the fab foursome. Start by taking a purse-onality quiz, then browse designer bags by your favorite character. Check out this adorable patent clutch from Be & D ($13-$30/week). We love the pinwheel stitching and the chain strap.
(Sigh) May 30th just can’t get here fast enough.

Check out the following link to our friends' blog! It's the brainchild of a dear friend of mine, who for now hides behind his blog pseudonym.
It's like a little black book with favorite addresses anywhere, a bit eclectic due to a few contributors.. but overall, places you and i would like! it's fairly new, so expect the number of reviews to grow over the weeks to come!
And, if you've just been somewhere you think should be on here, or even you want to edit a little piece yourselves, be in touch, and i'll put you through to the editor in chief!

DNC events
1. May 20 - Join S. Florida Labor at the "Turn America Around Rally" to demonstrate against John McCain's terrible Economic Record for Working Families.
PLACE: Sheraton Miami Mart (near Miami International Airport), 711 NW 72nd Ave., Miami
On Tuesday, May 20 at 9:00AM, John McCain will be speaking to a group at the Sheraton Miami Mart in Miami on his policy on Cuba. We know it can't be good because he thought NAFTA (1 million jobs lost) was a good idea, voted for CAFTA, supports the Colombia Free Trade Deal and supports giving tax breaks for companies that ship jobs overseas. We need to have as many groups as possible to have a visible presence outside of this event. WEAR YOUR UNION or DEM T-SHIRTS!!!!
2. May 28 & 29 - Help us REGISTER NEW CITIZENS to vote!
Registration of new citizens - Wed.& Thurs. May 28 & 29, 9:00AM to 3:00PM.
Please RSVP to: Bob Goldstein (305) 970-9734 or Joan Kanet (305) 971-1525, Voter Registration Co-Chairs
PLACE: Miami Beach Convention Center (across street from doors, w. side) Look for the Democratic banners...Food & drink provided.
Thanks to your determined work as volunteers our registration of new citizens has been very successful. We are registering Democrats to Republicans at ratio of 3 to 1 and better. You can see the results, as the numbers Democrats in Miami Dade have gone ahead of Republicans in overall registration and Hispanic registration. We need your help again so we can increase the numbers of Democrats, which will pave the way to victory in November.
Good News! We will be working as partisan Democrats. This is a change from our previous work at Miami Beach. We will be working from a tent across the street from the hall and be allowed to wear partisan paraphernalia and encourage people to register as Democrats.
TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING: We can leave together on the 28th and 29th. Gather at the Dadeland Station Shopping Center 8304 S. DIxie Highway (the old Kerry-Edwards HQ in '04) at the clown statue in front of the Metrorail. We will be leaving at 8:30am.
If you are going separately, get there early enough so you can park in the MB Municipal Garage on 17th St. across the street from the hall to the south. RSVP to: Bob Goldstein (305) 970-9734 or Joan Kanet (305) 971-1525
We hope to see you at one or both events...

OSCAR FELDENKREIS
President and Chief Operating Officer
Oscar Feldenkreis, President and COO, grew up inspired by his father's entrepreneurial vision and is today second in command of one of the leading companies in men's apparel. Oscar came to the United States from Havana, Cuba, as an infant. He graduated from the Hebrew Academy in Miami Beach and North Miami Beach High School and attended the University of Miami. Beginning in high school, he worked in the apparel field whenever an opportunity arose, first in retail sales and then at the Supreme headquarters, where he took special interest in design, merchandising, and sales. In 1980, Feldenkreis joined what was then Supreme International as an account executive. At the time, Supreme’s core business was still the Guayabera, the Latin-inspired four-pocket tropical shirt. Mindful that without a broader and more diversified product line Supreme’s growth was limited, Oscar encouraged his father to change the company’s direction. Oscar’s keen fashion sense, aggressive sales vision, and instinct for branded business expanded the company's scope beyond private-label distribution. In 1988, Oscar introduced the company’s first major brand, Natural Issue. The line of casual shirts, sweaters, and pants soon became a leading label in men’s sportswear. As President and COO of Perry Ellis International, Oscar broadened the company's portfolio, increased brand awareness and created a brand presence across all levels of retail distribution. In 1993, Supreme International completed its initial public offering on the NASDAQ stock market. The infusion of cash enabled the company to move into a brand acquisition strategy. The company started acquiring brands on the premise that consumers buy products that they identify with and trust. The company’s key acquisition came in 1999 with the purchase of the rights to the Perry Ellis trademark. The company changed its name from Supreme to Perry Ellis International to better reflect the name recognition that the brand provided. In 2003, Perry Ellis International acquired Salant Corp., the largest licensee of the Perry Ellis brand. Perry Ellis International became a company of over 1400 associates, with multiple offices on both coasts and sourcing operations all over the globe. In February 2005, Perry Ellis International acquired Tropical Sportswear, growing in size to over 2200 associates. Perry Ellis International is one of the biggest men’s sportswear companies in the world, owning a portfolio of highly-recognized brands including Perry Ellis®, Jantzen®, Cubavera®, Munsingwear®, John Henry®, Original Penguin®, Grand Slam®, Natural Issue®, Axis®, Gotcha®, Farah® and Savane®. Oscar is involved in numerous local and national civic causes, including the Greater Miami Jewish Federation, the National Epilepsy Foundation, and the YPO organization.

Pacific Time reopens- Daily Candy
Arrival Time
Pacific Time Opens
Do antiaging creams work? Is reincarnation really possible? Why do other people’s cars always look cleaner than yours?
Not all of life’s burning questions have answers. But one does: When will Pacific Time reopen?
When the Cali-style resto closed its Lincoln Road location last year, chef/owner Jonathan Eismann promised to reopen in the Design District — and the waiting began. Today the indoor/outdoor venue, complete with theater kitchen, wood-burning oven, and full-service bar, finally opens.
Eismann’s evolved the Pan-Asian menu: sweet corn and leek soup with peeky toe crab dumpling; sheep’s milk gnudi with baby spinach, speck, and brown butter; and skate with celery root puree. The bar menu includes hot and sour popcorn shrimp and steak frites, plus classic cocktails, sustainable wines, and Florida-brewed beer.
Will dinner appease the masses until lunch service starts (in June)?
Good question.
Pacific Time, 35 Northeast 40th Street (305-722-7369).

6-year Anniversary Gig The Bushmen- June 7 2008
Save the Date - Saturday, June 7th at The Gables Bar The Bushmen will be celebrating 6 years of rocking together - well, almost together, when you consider that the band has seen 5 different drummers, 5 guitarists, and 1 keyboardist (yep, we used to have keyboards). The picture on this newsletter includes a shot of Teres, a cool kid from Mexico who only played with us for 2 gigs and then disappeared. The guy you see in the background (without the goatee) is the one and only Carlos Salcedo, the only other remaining original Bushman. It's been a 6 fun years, and I gotta tell you, I feel younger with every gig that passes by. So please come and celebrate with us on June 7th from 10 p.m. - 2 a.m., we're giving you plenty of time to find babysitting if you've got kids. Maybe you'll feel younger too after a few Tequila shots, and don't forget, "what happens at The Bar, stays in The Bar". Serg
