Join Michael Friedman and Erika Kornik, the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team in Training, for cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Michael is participating in the Alaska marathon as a member of society's Team in Training, the largest endurance sports training program in the world. Proceeds benefit the effort to find a cure for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin lymphoma and myeloma. Admission is $25 (cash only, please) and includes 2 cocktails and hors d'oeuvres. Florida Premiere of "How the Garcia Girls Spent their Summer"

Meet Elizabeth Peña (The Lost City) and Steven Bauer (Scarface) at the Women's International Film Festival's advance screening of "How the Garcia Girls Spent their Summer." In her feature debut, Georgina Garcia Riedel lovingly explores the terrain of longing, loneliness, and self-realization among three generations of single women in a Mexican-American family as they grapple with romantic drought. Peña and Bauer will be available for Q&A following the screening, and will attend the post-film reception. Limited seating. Friends of the Orphans, an organization that supports orphaned and abandoned children of Latin America and the Caribbean, are inviting you to learn about their mission and meet organization staff and supporters. The keynote speaker will be Reinhart Köhler, Family Services Director of Nuestros Pequeños Hermanos International, a network of orphanages and home to over 3,100 children in Latin America and the Caribbean. 11th Annual Cuisine for Art Fundraiser

Dinner is served by bigwigs in state, county and city government - all in the name of fun and fundraising by these good-natured celebrity waiters. State Senator Steve Geller, State Representatives Joseph Gibbons and Elaine Schwartz; Broward County School Board Chair Robin Bartlemen; and City of Hollywood Mayor Peter Bober are just a few of the public servants who will be wait staff for the night to benefit the Art and Culture Center of Hollywood. Lora Drasner’s “SUNSETS”
Self-taught photographer Lora Drasner celebrated the launch of her first book, “Sunsets,” at EPIC Residences and Hotel. The sun setting on beautiful Biscayne Bay provided the perfect backdrop for the evening, as Lora was on hand to sign books while guests enjoyed Champagne, hors d'ouvres and music by DJ Shlomi.

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival and Downtown Hollywood will host their monthly foreign film, entitled "Lovers of the Arctic Circle." This Spanish film, subtitled in English, is the story of circular lives, with circular names, and a circular place, the Polar Circle, where the day lives on under the midnight sun. Its mission is "some things never end, and love is one of them." Foreign films are presented every second Thursday of the month. Admission is $2. The doors open at 6:30, and showtime is promptly at 7.

13th Annual Summer Spree Auction

Judge Marilyn Milian, host of TV's The People's Court, will be Mistress of Ceremonies at this year's Summer Spree Auction. Sponsored by American Airlines and hosted by the Association for Retarded Citizens, South Florida, this event raises money for the needs of adults and children coping with developmental and other disabilities, including them in the community through advocation, education and social programs. Now in its 13th year, the auction is well known for offering fabulous vacation packages and an array of other great items. Hors d'oeuvres, wine courtesy of Diageo, a buffet dinner, exciting raffle prizes and live entertainment by Steel Harmony. Michael Guyer will serve as the auctioneer. Gator Guayabera Weekend

The Gator Guayabera Weekend, hosted by UF Association of Hispanic Alumni, has grown into three events: the Gator Golf Gathering, the Gator Academic Outreach Symposium, and the Gator Guayabera Guateque. The golf tournament will take place on Friday on the Doral's Red Course as "4-person team stroke play" beginning at 11:30 a.m. for registration and lunch, tee off at 1 p.m., followed by a BBQ dinner. A foursome is $800; individual $225. The Outreach Symposium, on Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon, is free and open to the public and features three distinquished UF professors speaking on the subjects of business, medicine and the law. The Gator Guayabera Guateque, honoring Danny Ponce as Gran Caiman of the Year, kicks off with the Pre-Guateque cocktail and silent auction from 6 to 8 p.m. with drinks by Bacardi, wines by Cavia and soft drinks by Pepsi. Dinner, awards and dancing to the music of "Orquesta America," a renowned salsa big band, follows at 8 p.m. The Mistress of Ceremonies is Local Channel 10's Kristi Krueger who was recently recognized as an alumni of distinction by the School of Journalism. ALS Recovery Fund is hosting their seventh annual run, which will take runners and walkers through the streets of Coconut Grove. ALS Recovery is comprised entirely of volunteers, and every dollar raised goes toward furthering the organization's mission to find a cure and improve the quality of care for ALS patients. There are age categories for runners, and runners will be chip-timed for awards. Not a runner and want to participate? Come on out and walk the course, or if you must, stay in bed and just send a donation. There are medals for top finishers and prizes for top fundraisers. It's $25 ($30 on race day) for adults and $10 for kids 14 and under. Bring the whole family!

President-Elect Fran Levey will be installed along with new Board members, Leslie Rosenfeld, Joan Muss, Sharlane Packar and Janie Tate. Tickets are $60 and include complimentary valet parking. Reptiles: The Beautiful and the Deadly
Held Over!
Sssssee the largest traveling reptile exhibition in the world at Metrozoo through August 10. Venomous snakes, lizards, crocodilians and turtles from around the world can be viewed in their natural habitats in this 5000 square-foot exhibition. Check out the Gila monster, Diamond-back rattler, cobra, and the African Gaboon viper with fangs up to two inches long. Hands-on and interactive, you can touch harmless snakes, "milk" venom from a model rattlesnake, spot all kinds of different reptiles from soft-shelled turtles and chameleons to leaf-tail geckos and green tree pythons, see a 20-minute program packed with beautiful photography and informative facts and watch these creatures being fed at 11 a.m. each weekend. Open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., admission is $13.95 for adults, $9.95 for kids 3 to 12, and free for members and children under 3. Tickets can be purchased online.
