A Taste of the Garden

Wednesday, January 30 from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m.

Chefs from fine restaurants will be offering tastes of their signature dishes and wine purveyors will open their reserves for your pleasure amid the tropical setting at the Miami Beach Botanical Garden. The event is organized by the Miami Beach Garden Club as a fundraiser for the Garden and includes a silent auction featuring a variety of services and dinners at local restaurants. A selection of orchids will be for sale. Tickets are $35 p/p in advance and $45 at the event; complimentary valet parking.

2008 Women of Vision Luncheon

Thursday, January 31 at 11 a.m.

The American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science will recognize 5 outstanding women at its 12th annual luncheon. The 2008 Women of Vision are: Marla Bergmann for Philanthropy; Marcy Lefton for Service to Community and Israel; Rachel Lapidot, Ph.D for Business and Finance; and Nilza Kallos, M.D. for Science and Medicine. In addition, Pennie Abramson, National President of ACWIS, will receive the 2008 Women's Leadership Award. ABC's Kristi Krueger (left, above) will emcee the luncheon and introduce guest speaker Lynn Sherr (left, below), correspondent for the 20/20 TV series, who will talk about "Women Changing the World." The luncheon supports an Endowed Master's Degree Scholarship for a female scientist at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel, researching Alternative Energy. Tickets are $125.

Project: New Born Wine Event


Project: New Born, one of South Florida's most established non-profits, teamed with Crown Wine and Spirits for the first ever “New Born at Night.” More than 400 guests attended the wine tasting held at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino. Crown brought with them some of the most established California vineyards for this very special fund raiser. Following the tasting, many guests headed over to Pangaea Lounge, located in Seminole Paradise, for a chic and fabulous after party.

Musical Instrument Drive and Reception

January 31 to February 2

"Instrumental to Learning" is a program being launched nationwide by Hilton Hotels Corporation to bring awareness to the importance of music as part of education. Hilton-Miami Airport Hotel is spearheading the local drive to collect gently used musical instruments for underserved students in Miami-Dade. Residents are asked to drop off instruments in good condition at the hotel anytime between January 31 and February 2. No instrument but a desire to help? Your monetary donation ($20 suggested) will be used to purchase instruments. To kick off the drive, join Gina Martell, formerly of Love 94, at a reception at the Hilton-Miami Airport on Thursday, January 31, from 6 to 9 p.m., for complimentary hors d'oeuvres, beer and wine, entertainment and a silent auction to benefit the cause. New World Symphony has joined in the drive (541 Lincoln Road), and instruments can be dropped off at their offices any week day between 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. beginning immediately. RSVP please.

"Taste of Love"

The Transplant Foundation will host its 5th Annual "Taste of Love," a wine and food festival that features spectacular food and drinks from over 20 of South Florida's premier restaurants and wineries. Five outstanding women will be honored by the American Committee for the Weizmann Institute of Science at its annual luncheon. ABC’s Kristi Krueger is emcee, and special guest speaker is Lyn Sheer, correspondent for 20/20. Tickets are $125, and proceeds support an Endowed Master’s Degree Scholarship for a woman scientist at the Weizmann Institute in Rehovot, Israel.

Mad Hatter's Tea Party

Saturday, February 2 at 3 p.m.

PlayGround Theatre's new adaptation of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland kicks off with a fun-filled afternoon of sweets and savories with the Mad Hatter. Children are invited to join in the costume parade dressed as their favorite character from the Lewis Carroll classic and take part in the delightful fantasy activities planned for the party. They'll make Mad Hats, take a picture with Alice, play croquet, and lots more. A fashion show will feature children's clothes from Kidding Around, and there will be a special preview of a scene from Alice's Adventures in Wonderland. Tickets are $100 for adults and $25 for children, and each ticket holder receives a ticket to a performance at PlayGround Theatre. Proceeds of the event benefit the theatre's Education and Outreach Program.

2008 Gala in the Garden: Arts & Flowers

Saturday, February 2

Gala guests will be treated to a spectacular evening at Fairchild Garden overlooking the tropical landscape set with the pop-art exhibition "Roy Lichtenstein at Fairchild." The Northern Trust Ballroom in the Jean Ellen DuPont Shehan Visitor Center is the place for the cocktail reception and the Gala's silent auction. Abracadabra Fundraising Raffle Event

Thursday, February 7 at 6 p.m.

More than $100,000 worth of donated works of art will be raffled off to lucky ticket holders at the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood. The exhibition, titled "Abracadabra," can be previewed now at the Center. On the evening of the fundraiser, raffle ticket holders are invited to a reception from 6 to 8 p.m. so that they can make their choices. Then when their names are randomly drawn, they select from the remaining works of art. Each ticket holder is guaranteed an artwork valued from $500 to $6,000. Raffle tickets are available now - $375 for one ticket and admission for 2; $700 for 2 tickets and admission for 4; $1,000 for 3 tickets and admission for 6. Heart Healthy Challenge Cook-Off

Deadline: February 19

The Florida Heart Research Institute kicks off their "Heart of a Chef" Weekend with an amateur cooking competition for heart-healthy appetizer and entrée recipes. Submit your recipe online or by mail, together with a $25 processing fee, before February 19. Thirty recipes will be selected for the competition, and 16 finalists will be invited to an event at one of four Williams-Sonoma locations in South Florida. One winner from each store will be selected to compete at the Heart of a Chef Festival on April 27 at Jungle Island. Prizes to winners range from a one week stay in Orlando to cooking classes at Le Cordon Bleu to a culinary gift package.
