Opening of "A Place to Call Home"
Friday
September 28 from 7 to 10 p.m.

The concept of "home," a place of attachment and identity or the loss of home or homelessness, is the subject of this exhibit that runs through October 12. It's co-presented by Arts at St. Johns and Rhythmic Raptures as part of an arts intervention program called H.E.A.L. View the exhibit free of charge Mon-Thurs 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Fri 10 to 7. In addition to the visual arts, a film documentary will be shown on October 5, and a panel discussion and closing reception is on October 12. View more information.

Jazz at MOCA

Jazz at MOCA headlines pianist Mike Gerber, a mainstay in the South Florida jazz community for over 30 years. Gerber, a classically trained jazz pianist, is known for his outstanding technique and masterful musicality. He's admired for his flourishing improvisations and lyrical handling of complex pieces. On the jazz scene since the early 70's, Gerber recently appeared at the Van Dyke Café and Arturo Sandoval's Club. Jazz at MOCA is a monthly free outdoor concert held on the front plaza of the Museum. On these special Friday nights MOCA galleries stay open till 10 p.m. so visitors may tour the current exhibition, "Karen Kilimnik." Jazz at MOCA is sponsored by Starbucks Coffee Company and the City of North Miami.

Gala Opening Night: Frost Symphony Orchestra with Gabriela Montero

Festival Miami kicks off its 24th season with world renowned pianist Gabriela Montero who joins the Frost Symphony Orchestra with conductor Thomas Sleeper. The program features Sergei Rachmaninoff's passionate Piano Concerto No. 2, Beethoven's Symphony No. 7 and the world premiere of Lansing McLoskey's Chanson pour cordes. Presented in collaboration with the Miami Civic Music Assn., and sponsored by Adrienne Arsht and TotalBank. Tickets range from $60 to $15. "Subversive Cabaret"

Alhambra Orchestra Season Opener

Alhambra Orchestra, Miami's community orchestra, opens its 18th season in dramatic style with Mozart's "Haffner" Symphony and the lively Raymond Overture by Thomas. Featured soloists will be Miami Symphony principals, trumpeters Robert Keating and Jean-Claude Misset performing Vivaldi's Concerto for Two Trumpets, and flutist Carol Naveira Nicholson performing Borne's virtuosic Carmen Fantasy. Reginald Nicholson is Artistic Director and Conductor. This concert is free to the public.

Cuartetango Show: New Tango from Argentina

World-renowned composer Astor Piazzolla launched a new tango culture for the 20th century by infusing the old form with the unpredictable rhythms and harmonies of jazz and classical music. Nuevo Tango celebrates its rich musical culture and opens limitless possibilities for musical expressions that speak of our time. An innovative group at the forefront of Nuevo Tango genre, the Cuartetango String Quartet "conveys all the tango rage and the aggressive nuances of tango with the mere aid of two violins, a viola and a cello." It's led by Cuartetango's creator Leonardo Suarez Paz, billed by the press as "tango royalty." Experience the world of Argentinean tango with the quartet accompanied by four dynamic dancers who showcase traditional and new tango. A Festival Miami presentation, tickets are $15 to $30; all seats reserved.

Art in the Park Concert Series

Complementing the already popular Gallery Nights in Coral Gables, the Kiwanis Club of Little Havana, in cooperation with the City of Coral Gables and local businesses, is sponsoring an exciting musical addition to the evening. At Ponce Circle Park there will be artists demonstrating their art forms and exhibiting their work. As for the musical entertainment - it's a musical mix-‘em-ups! Locos por Juana combine the sounds of Latin funk and Latin jazz with blends of cumbia, reggae and rumba. The Suenalo Sound System adds its rhythms of Western, Latin and Pan-African styles, and Lanzallamas Monofonica adds the percussion instruments of cajon, steel pan and timbalitos. Come out, see wonderful art and hear terrific sounds!

Altar Egos/Mirror Images: A Workshop

October 6 from 1 to 4 p.m.

Artists Dinorah Rodriguez and Michelle Weinberg teach the artistic and technical processes used by artist Maria Magdalena Campos-Pons. Her exhibition, "Everything is Separated by Water," is currently on view at the Bass Museum of Art. Using the terrain of the museum, courtyard, café, reflecting pool and park, participants will focus on ritual and identity to create altar-like arrangements with paint, fabric, braids, beads, twine and natural elements. A scanner, digital still and video cameras will be available to experiment with imaging. You can bring your own camera or laptop, as well as snapshots, costumes and any other objects of personal significance. Works will be produced and printed or transferred to flash drives to take home at the end of the workshop. This is open to adults and teens, novices and artists. Cost is $15.

"Home is Where the Art Is"

Art at St. Johns previews the upcoming season's offerings with an eclectic showcase of talent, including Ray Yanez, Kristen Fox, Jude Parry, Jean Villamizar, Project Copernicus, Nydia Noriega, Maria Letona and Melissa Lesniak. Frost Concert Jazz Band

Grammy Award-winning composer and UM alumna Maria Schneider joins forces once again with her alma mater's Concert Jazz Band, conducted by Dante Luciani. Schneider's highly original music, often praised as "heart-stoppingly gorgeous" and "arresting," falls elegantly between avant-garde jazz and modern classical. Come experience Schneider's truly novel approach to big jazz band composition for the new century. Tickets for this Festival Miami concert range from $15 to $30. All seats are reserved.

"Petrouchka"
October 6 – 7

Arts Ballet Theatre of Florida, under the artistic direction of Vladimir Issaev, opens its season with Petrouchka set to music by Igor Stravinsky and book by A. Benois. Taking place at a Russian fair, the ballet's principal characters are three puppets: the Ballerina, Petrouchka and the Moor, all commanded by the Charlatan. Also on the program are "The Seasons," choreography by Issaev, music by Verdi, and the spectacular "Spring Waters," choreography by Asaf Messerer, music by Rachmaninoff. Tickets are $25 for adults and $15 for children under 12. Performances are Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.

"The Love of Three Oranges"
Through October 14

This beloved comedy, inspired by Prokofiev's Opera, has now been adapted for children. Appropriate for ages 6 and up, this story of the play follows a young prince, cursed by a wicked witch and forced to voyage into distant lands in search of three oranges, each of which contains a princess. By Carlos Gozzi, adaptation by Stephanie Ansin. PlayGround Theatre performances of "The Love of Three Oranges" continue through Sunday, October 14. See full schedule. Tickets are $15 each.
