Miami City Ballet opens its season in Palm Beach County with one of the most glamorous ballets ever created, "Jewels," choreographed by George Balanchine. The three-act ballet is set to music by three different composers: "Emeralds," distinctly French, with music by Gabriel Fauré; "Rubies," jazzy and American, set to Igor Stravinsky; and "Diamonds," imperial Russian, danced to Peter Ilyitch Tchaikovsky. The ballet was inspired by a jewelry collection at Van Cleef and Arpels in New York that piqued Balanchine's imagination. Performances are Fri at 8 p.m., Sat at 2 and 8 p.m., and Sun at 1 p.m. Individual tickets range from $19 to $75, and 4-program and 2-program subscriptions are also available. Celestial Music

New World Symphony welcomes Michael Collins, Clarinet (pictured), and Alasdair Neale, Conductor for Celestial Music. Kernis summons angels in his mystical piece for strings. Written shortly after Stalin's death, Shostakovich's Tenth is a striking musical portrait of the dictator whose iron fist stifled the composer for years. Program includes: Kernis: Musica celestis; Mozart: Clarinet Concerto; and Shostakovich: Symphony No. 10. Performances are Fri and Sat at 8 p.m. and Sun at 3. Tickets range from $27 to $78.
