2007 Philanthropy Awards Luncheon

A special group of philanthropists will be honored at the 2007 Philanthropy Awards Luncheon hosted by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), in partnership with Dade Community Foundation, Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce and Planned Giving Council of Miami-Dade. The luncheon, presented by Catholic Community Foundation, celebrates National Philanthropy Day and AFP's 22nd anniversary by recognizing these outstanding honorees: Swanee and Paul DiMare (Outstanding Philanthropists); Ocean Bank - José A. Concepción (Julia Tuttle Award for Corporate Citizenship); Adalberto Vara, Jr. (James W. McLamore Outstanding Volunteer Award); and Alvah and Betty Chapman (AFP Lifetime Achievement Award). BBBS Annual Miccosukee Golf Classic

Commemorating the discovery of Puerto Rico, Broward's largest Hispanic event of the year gets underway with a weekend of great talent and a day especially dedicated to the developmentally disabled. Performers include Tony Vega and his band; Sonora Ponceña; Luis "Perico" Ortiz; Tommy Olivencia and La Primerisima; Meñique, Willie Panama and Julio Flores from Panama; Melina Almodovar; and Platano & Shelina. There's a Kids Town, sponsored by Winn Dixie with inflatables and children's activities; Mr. Salsa (Izzy Sanabria) with an exhibition of Salsa posters and memorabilia; carnival rides; and Puerto Rican and Hispanic food vendors. 25th Anniversary Luncheon for FAVACA

The Miami 5K Sprint for Darfur

Saturday, November 17 at 8:30 a.m.

Six high schoolers are spearheading this event to raise money and awareness for the ongoing tragedy in Darfur. 100% of all proceeds will go to Africa Action and the Genocide Intervention Network. You don't have to run to support this effort - come out and walk around the beautiful Granada Golf Course and show that you care. The run/walk is being overseen by Footworks, and there's a great post-run celebration planned with music and refreshments. There will also be information available about the Darfur crisis. Entry fee for students is $15; others $20 - $30. Free event parking in the Andalusa Parking Garage and west of LeJeune Road. Opening Night Gala

Florida Grand Opera opens its 67th anniversary season with a new production of Mozart's "Così Fan Tutte" followed by a magical evening of gourmet dining, vintage champagne and dancing. As the curtain goes down on the final act, guests will step into old world elegance set on the new state-of-the-art Lynn Wolfson Stage at Carnival's Ziff Ballet Opera House. Combining high fashion and grand opera, the gala will showcase the works of five celebrated fashion designers: Julian Chang, Mayda Cisneros, Ivonne de la Vega, Victoria Lopez Castro and Silvia Tcherassi. Each has designed an evening gown inspired by one of the season's five productions. The gowns will be modeled, adorned by diamonds by GRAFF, creator of the most fabulous jewels in the world, and auctioned at the gala. Tickets are $600 to $2,500 with seating of tables of 10. Sunday Brunch and Art Installation

Event Chairs Patricia Hirsch and Anthony Japour are hosting a "Healing the World through Art" brunch to raise funds and awareness for a new Pediatric Dialysis unit, which will provide life-saving kidney treatments for more than 5,000 children each year. The goal of Hirsch and Japour is to raise $100,000 in pledges. The event also celebrates the installation of Henry Richardson's six-foot, 5000 pound glass orb entitled "Tikkun" (Healing the World). The sculpture is inspired by the phrase "Tikkun Olam," which simply means repairing the world. Whenever each of us performs an act of kindness, we are part of a collective force that mends the world. Also on view will be art works by winners of the Teen Art Fair Competition, and musicians from the New World Symphony, Nicole Abissi and Stacy Berkley, will perform. This event is free; donations gratefully accepted.
