Jessica Setnickʼs Eating Disorders Boot Camp and Molly Kellogg ʼs Counseling Intensive workshops will be coming to Florida for the first time January 23-25, 2009. This is a great opportunity to attend one or both of these outstanding workshops without the additional expense of travel to another part of the country.
Eating Disorders Boot Camp is ideal for eating disorder treaters in all disciplines, including nurses, doctors, dietitians, and therapists of all kinds, and appropriate for those new to the profession as well as those with lots of experience. There is something for everyone, lots of new tools for dealing with the recurring themes and issues we all face, plus great networking. In addition to breakfast, lunch, and all materials, registration also includes 9 continuing education hours, pre-approved for RDs and DTRs, and a copy of Jessicaʼs book, The Eating Disorders Clinical Pocket Guide.
Counseling Intensive is for RDs and DTRs working one-on-one with clients in any practice area, including eating disorders, diabetes, and weight management. The focus is on difficult patient situations, including resistance, transference, ending treatment and boundaries. Molly Kellogg is a dietitian and licensed counselor, and fills in the missing pieces that therapists learn but dietitians lack. Breakfast, lunch and materials are included in registration, as well as 9 continuing education hours.
Early registration discounts for both workshops are available until December 24, 2008, and registration is discounted an additional 10% for 5 or more attendees from the same facility.

DailyCandy Miami - Hed Case
Hed Case
Hed Kandi Gastrolounge Opens
hed's up!
Is Attention Deficit Dining spoiling your social life? Do you suffer ennui, anxiety, and depression in restaurants?
Next time ADD threatens, reach for newly opened Hed Kandi.
The lounge on Washington Avenue offers down-tempo dance music and molecular gastronomy. Hed Kandi works by stimulating all of your senses at once with dimmed fluorescent pillars and London DJ playlists.
The cuisine bends the mind. Take the Bruschetta 20/20: a fresh-squeezed tomato juice capsule on balsamic caviar and micro basil powder topped with garlic crouton crumbles, or the smoking sweet plantains wrapped in bacon and paired with a mojito popsicle shooter. The dessert menu, written on edible paper, lists ice cream blasted with nitrogen and spun with a pop-rock garnish.
Hed Kandi is safe to pair with alcohol (the Sexy Kandi cocktail has muddled strawberries).
But side effects may include dancing.
Hed Kandi Lounge, 1200 Washington Avenue, South Beach (305-695-1998 or hedkandiloungemiami.com).

4 1/2 Minutes of Inspiration ... The Remarkable Story of Luma and Gabriel
In this short video clip from Rio de Janeiro ... walk with me into the heart of Latin America's largest slum, Rocinha favela ... let me introduce you to Luma and Gabriel, two amazing kids in a Developing Minds Foundation school ... feel what it's like for them to push past obstacles amid the violent chaos ... and meet Marcia, the extraordinary woman who could cower with fear under the watch of heavily armed gangs controlling the area ... but instead relies on raw courage and perseverance to develop the minds of these young children ... and in the process becomes a hero to thousands in her community.
Click for New Video: The Remarkable Story of Luma and Gabriel
This holiday season please consider placing an envelope beneath the Christmas tree, next to the Menorah or as part of any other ritual in keeping with your beliefs ... letting someone important to you know that you have made a contribution on their behalf ... opening up opportunities for Luma, Gabriel and others to get an education and have a happier life. You can also send a link of the video to the person on whose behalf you are giving ... your child, brother, sister, parent or friend.
Yes, material gifts are nice to offer and receive (and friends...I'm really counting on you this year!!!) ... but there is something special about making an investment in the future of humanity ... it brings to life the true meaning of hope and giving that this season is all about. To make a donation, you can use your credit card on the Developing Minds Foundation website.
Happy holidays ... and thank you for making this a great year for many of those who needed it the most.

Nafisi, the author of the international bestseller Reading Lolita in Tehran, tells her story of growing up in Iran against the background of a country’s political revolution at a time her mother served in the Iranian Parliament while her father, once the mayor of Tehran, was in jail. This month’s recommended readings carry on themes explored during FCLA’s fall semester: environment and nature, graphic novels and Egyptian literature.
The World Without Us by Alan Weisman (St. Martin’s Press). Weisman’s tour of a post-human earth has been called a “fascinating nonfiction eco-thriller” by the Washington Post. He draws on the expertise of engineers, atmospheric scientists, zoologists and even religious leaders, to help describe what the planet would have looked like if not for humans and what it will return to when we disappear. From collapsing infrastructure to the wilding of farms, Weisman’s book reveals Earth’s tremendous capacity for self-healing. Related link: www.worldwithoutus.com
Aya and Aya of Yop City by Marguerite Abouet & Clement Oubrerie (Drawn and Quarterly). These two graphic novels explore an Africa of hope and miracles told through the eyes of Aya, a spirited 19-year-old from the Ivory Coast. Aya won the 2006 award for Best First Album at the Angouleme International Comic Festival. Aya of Yop City continues the story with a lively cast of characters. Related link: www.drawnandquarterly.com
The Yacoubian Building by Alaa Al Aswany (Harper Perennial). Aswany explores a world of political corruption, sexual repression, religious extremism and hope in modern Egypt in this controversial novel. The stories are told through the prism of the characters who inhabit the Yacoubian Building, a once glorious and elegant Art Deco building in downtown Cairo that is slowly decaying. The book has been described as a “window on to the experience of loss and love in the Arab world.” Related link: www.harpercollins.com

America The Beautiful
Is America obsessed with beauty?
From the producers of Fahrenheit 911 and Bowling for Colombine
The USA is known for being one of the wealthiest nations on the planet with the most opportunities for its citizens. In 2004 alone, Americans spent $12.4 billion (yes, billion!) on cosmetic surgery. Filmmaker Darryl Roberts goes on a two year journey to examine America’s new obsession; physical perfection. In America the Beautiful, we learn secrets, confessions, and strikingly harsh realities as Roberts unearths the origins and deadly risks of our nation’s quest for physical perfection. Follow Darryl as he asks Paris Hilton, Jessica Simpson, Julianne Moore, Michael Beach, Mena Suvari, Martin Short, and other celebrities and experts in cosmetics, fashion, media, and self-esteem the major question at hand. . .Does America have an unhealthy obsession with beauty?
Director Darryl Roberts will introduce the film and be present
for Q&A after the film

Film Retrospective coinciding with the
Russian Dreams Exhibition at the Bass Museum of Art
Father and Son (Otets i syn/ Отец и сын) (Russia/2003) With Andrei Shchetinin and Aleksei Nejmyshev
Father and Son won the FIPRESCI prize at the Cannes Film Festival with the following note from the critics who gave the award: “For brilliant images and the director’s original way of depicting the powerful bond that unites a father and a son.” The film is part of a trilogy begun with Mother and Son, and will end with the planned Two Brothers and a Sister. With one of the most poetic films ever made, Sokorov shows that intensity of emotions and imagery associated with human intimacy does not need to be associated with sexuality (which some critics read into to the film’s premise, incorrectly, according to the director himself).
In Russian with English subtitles.
WINNER: Cannes Film Festival FIPRESCI Prize
Russian Guild of Film Critics Golden Aries for Art Direction
“LIKE A DREAM WITHIN A DREAM. Its images and emotions are vivid, disquieting and also hermetic, and while it may frustrate your desire for clear storytelling and psychological transparency, it has an intensity that surpasses understanding.”

The second story, interlinked with the first, concerns a period in his later life when he seeks peace and solitude in an abandoned German village whose inhabitants were expelled after the war.

A Christmas Tale (Un conte de Noël)
(A film by Arnaud Desplechin/2008)
With Catherine Deneuve, Mathieu Amalric, Melvil Poupaud,
Anne Cosigny, Chiara Mastroianni, Laurent Capelluto
Abel and Junon had two children, Joseph and Elizabeth. Victim of a rare genetic condition, Joseph's only hope was a bone marrow transplant. As they and Elizabeth were incompatible, his parents conceived a third child in the hope of saving their son. But little Henri too was unable to help his brother, and Joseph died at the age of seven. The Vuillard family has never recovered. Masterfully directed and acted, by turns savage, bittersweet, darkly comic and unbearably moving, A Christmas Tale shows internationally acclaimed Desplechin at the height of his powers. In French with English subtitles.

Hansel and Gretel A Modern Opera in Three Acts
Performance at: Glyndebourne Festival, England. July 2008
Approximate running time: 135’, Music: Englebert Humperdinck, Libretto: Adelheid Wette, Conductor: Kazushi Ono, Directed: Laurent Pelly, Sets: Barbara de Limburg, Costumes: Laurent Pelly Cast: Jennifer Holloway mezzo-soprano Hänsel, Adriana Kučherová soprano Gretel
About HÄNSEL UND GRETEL
With this modern version of the classic fairy tale, Glyndebourne is presenting Englebert Humperdinck’s (1854-1921) Hänsel und Gretel for the first time in the 2008 Festival. The work has been a constant and extraordinary success since its premiere in 1893. Like all great fairy tales, the story has darker underpinnings, evident in Humperdinck’s brilliant orchestral writing which accompanies the lost siblings’ journey through a shadowy world of unknown and limitless menace.

"Adriana Kucerova's irrepressibly hyperactive Gretel steals every scene. I don't think I've seen an opera singer expend so much energy on stage. It's as if she is connected directly to the national grid.” - Richard Morrison, Times Online

With Ivan Barnov, Oldrich Kaiser, Julia Jentsch, Martin Huba
In Czech New Wave master filmmaker Jirí Menzel’s latest film (and sixth adaptation of a Bohumil Hrabal novel), which was ten years in the making, the wryly cynical and comedic screenplay focuses on two parallel stories. The first follows the youthful exploits and gradual maturing of an ambitious little man before the War and during the German occupation. The second story, interlinked with the first, concerns a period in his later life when he seeks peace and solitude in an abandoned German village whose inhabitants were expelled after the war.

Help Hands On Miami
Season's Greetings!
Dear Fellow HOM Volunteer:
I need your help! I have been a volunteer, volunteer leader and financial supporter of Hands On Miami for 10 years. I believe that HOM does a great job and really makes a big difference in our community. Together, we all make a difference in people's lives. To continue this work we need more donations to meet the HOM budget for this year.
We all have a great opportunity to help HOM before the end of 2008. Every dollar you give before the end of the year will be matched by a generous contribution of the George S. Bachelor Foundation. The Foundation has agreed to match any contributions that will in turn be focused on growing our Youth Volunteer Corps. So if you give $100, it becomes $200; if you give $500 it becomes $1,000 and so on.
I plan to give at least $750 before the end of the year to help HOM out, will you help too?
I ask you to join me in making an end of year tax-deductible contribution to Hands On Miami, which spends 84% percent of all funds raised directly on programs (that is a very high amount compared to other charities). I know we give our time as volunteers, but HOM needs your financial support. Whatever amount you can give continues our important community building work.
Like you, I am feeling the pinch of our current economic environment. But, I feel very strongly that now must be the time to support the Hands On Miami and let then know how much we appreciate what they do for our community and for us.
Thank you for your gift of any amount. If you want to make a gift by credit card now, please click here.
If you want to mail in your gift, mail it to:
The Ansin Building
3250 SW 3rd Ave
Miami, FL 33129
Best wishes for a Happy Holiday Season,

Want to take a walk on the wild side?
Let the good times roll at Hot Tuna. It’s more than a feeling; it’s an Asian fusion eatery that will rock you.
Atop the back-in-black granite bar, the staff performs dance numbers to Bon Jovi, Def Leppard, and other free birds. Love madly the imported silks, snakeskin banquettes, and double-sided screen playing Japanese videos.
You ain’t seen nothing yet — until you’ve tasted the lump crab with lime aioli, seaweed salad with plum dressing, or glazed chicken with roasted cashews and mandarin oranges. Two more tickets to paradise: dim sum (Kobe beef pot stickers, lobster dumplings) and the Hot Tuna Tastes (white miso-brushed sea bass). Or light your fire with yakitori (grilled meat), as in chicken and green garlic skewers.
And for dessert, coconut terrine.

No, Area 31 is not a supersecret government lab. It’s actually a Mediterranean-inspired seafood restaurant that debuts next week on the 16th floor of the oh-so-posh Epic Hotel, at 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way. The name is a play on Fishing Area 31, a region of the western central Atlantic that includes the Florida coast. Which means the raw bar features stone crab, yellowfin tuna, and Key West shrimp. The place also serves grilled local fish served with a variety of sauces, and side dishes range from lemon Swiss chard to English pea risotto. There’s valet parking for your car but not, unfortunately, for your black helicopter.
Ticket prices for February’s South Beach Wine & Food Festival can be as rich as cream of foie gras soup. But for the rest of this week (until Friday, December 19), they’ll go at least a little light with a 10 percent discount on passes to all the four-day food party’s multitudinous events. And if you just can’t live without chowing down a burger with the unspeakably annoying Rachael Ray, the festival folks are also offering “SoBe Bucks,” which will allow you to get into even sold-out events such as Little Miss EVOO’s Burger Bash. How cool is that?

Hard up for something to do with your honey this weekend? Check out Do I Make You Horny?, billed as “America’s naughtiest improv comedy game show,” put on at 10 p.m. every Friday and Saturday through December 27 by comedy troupe Just the Funny. At $10 a pop, ticket prices are hardly stiff, and all of those naughty double entendres will make you want to come and come again. Really. Of course, you’ll want to eat out first, and what restaurant could be better than the nearby El Carajo, Miami’s (and maybe the world’s) only gas station tapas bar, whose name is Spanish slang for a particular part of the male anatomy. (Hint: Vice President ____ Cheney.)
“Yo-ho-ho and 52 rums, cachaças, and piscos from 18 countries.” Today’s pirates wear Brioni suits and carry Vuitton briefcases instead of clenching swords in their teeth, but that’s no reason not to yo-ho-ho a bit at Rumbar, the “vintage Havana/Hemingway-style bar” at the Ritz-Carlton Key Biscayne. Along with enough high-octane hooch to shiver your timbers, including a tasting flight of five rums, there’s a humidor full of fine cigars, munchies such as sugar-cane prawns and short-rib sliders, and Nostalgia, a four-piece Latin band that jams Thursday through Saturday. Go and give it your best Johnny Depp imitation.
Lee Klein finds a tiny Thai gem downtown, and Short Order, our food blog, explores behind the scenes at your favorite eatery.

Really. Cafe Bites from New Times

‘Tis the season for holiday cheer, but if you’ve left your shopping to the last minute, chances are you’re feeling more like Ebenezer Scrooge than jolly ol' Saint Nick. Before you get all bah-humbug, take a gander at this Weekly and let Yelp's naughty 'n' nice little elves direct you straight to the prezzies.
For the Nester:
Cindy W raves Arango is "the perfect store for design-o-philes who work in the creative industry or fetish-ize beautiful, functional objects in their home decor." Esther G is a huge fan of Bagua's Asian and global-inspired goods and kitschy treasures – no wonder she gets 90% of her gift shopping done there! Of course you could also follow Liz T's lead and pop into temporary pop-up shop Luminaire X to find unique design pieces... or maybe a $3K coffee table book?!?
For the Aspiring Chef:
Help your foodie friends slice and dice their way to culinary perfection with cooking lessons. Justin P turns to Chef Jean-Pierre Cooking School to learn the fundamentals. The best part? At the end of these Kitchen 101 classes, students get to chow down on their creations! Similarly, la scuola é bella at Casa Toscana, where Chef Sandra Stephani instructs on Italian eats every Saturday.
For the Wine-O:
Make it easy on yourself and your loved ones by opting for that magical, universally-welcomed gift that's a perfect fit your boss, your best friends, and everyone in between. Nicole M scores bottles for her wine aficionado pals with a little help from her friends at Wolfe's, while Kathy G fills cabinets with Cabernet at W Wine Boutique – with buys under $15, in vino veritas, indeed.
For the Geek:
For the biblio/cinema-philes in your life, Dan B points us in the direction of Books and Books in Coral Gables, "possibly the best bookstore you will go to, anywhere." And one of their author-autographed copies makes a special gift even more special-y-er. For film buffs, how about a membership with Miami Beach Cinematheque? The gift of the classic silver screen will make him forget about why mishaps like Four Christmases and Beverly Hills Chihuahua happen.

Reconnect with your First Love and get a Second Chance
Working with TVLand on a new program called "First Love Second Chance".
We are reaching out to friends from around the country to reach people who may be interested in appearing on the show. My hope is with either your help, or the help of other journalists like yourself and others we can spread the word about this opportunity.
Here is the blurb on the show we are casting...
"Ever wondered what happened to the one that got away? To your high school sweetheart or college love? That's the question at the heart of this new TV Land program which reunites former couples and gives them a glimpse of what life would have been like if they'd stayed together. In each one-hour episode, a former girlfriend and boyfriend who are currently single will be reunited for an evening to see whether they can stand the idea of living with each other for two weeks -one week in her home with her life, the second in his. Will the passage of time and their differing life experiences have changed them beyond recognition? Will they be tempted once again by each other, or decide they can't get far enough away? First Love, Second Chance reveals whether true first love conquers all for the couples -or whether they discover that they had a lucky escape first time around!
If you are single, between 35 and 49 years old and looking to reconnect with a past love, we want to hear from you!
If you are interested or want to tell us your story of lost love, please visit us at www.cornwellcasting.com or send your story to firstlovecasting@me.com."
Any avenues that you could send this down or any contacts that may be of help would be very much appreciated. Additionally, If you have any questions feel free to email us at tonymiros at yahoo.com or firstlovecasting at me.com

Miami Filmmaker Project
Entertainment Industry Incubator launches Miami Filmmaker Project
The Entertainment Industry Incubator is very pleased to announce the launch of the Miami Filmmaker Project (MFP), a new program devoted to the professional development of South Florida-based filmmakers. For those of you who are familiar with some of our most popular offerings over the last decade, the MFP, whose programs run in two to three year cycles, will offer a guiding hand from movie industry experts, both national and local. Tracks will be offered consecutively for screenwriting, directing and producing.
So what’s in it for you?
As with several of our previous programs, there will be a submission process and the ten most qualified entrants in each of three categories will be invited to participate in one of the designated intensives that will take place consecutively over the course of a year. The intention is to help the talented individual filmmaker hone his or her craft so that, from start to finish, there is a mentor available who has previous solid industry experience and the connections with which to offer support and assistance. By the end of the two – three year process, participants should have a movie of which they can be proud and is of the caliber that would be accepted by the major film festivals around the country and the world.
As always, the Incubator will call upon its “entourage” (industry VIPs) to offer ongoing expertise and contacts to the ten gifted filmmakers who have been chosen to participate with us in each of the three tracks (sometimes there is overlap so one person can qualify for more than one intensive). There will also be a series of workshops on the ways in which film gets to market.
So how do you become one of those ten?
The first intensive offered will be screenwriting and the round of submissions for that will be opening on December 1st. We are looking at feature length scripts that are written by local filmmakers and if they tell a local story, so much the better. As with our previous script contests, your submission will be read by industry personnel and will run through a process of professional examination searching for those that would benefit most by participating in the MFP. We expect studio personnel and talent agents to be among those that read for us.
If you are chosen…
If your script is chosen, you will be notified and asked to clear your calendar for the dates that you would need to be in Miami for this professional development opportunity. It is important that you attend all sessions of the intensive. We want to insure that those who win a seat in this competitive situation are able to receive maximum benefit.
So check our website after Dec. 1st: www.eincubator.org for more information or call us at (305)672-9297. See you at the movies.
