Opening Reception of "Fire and Ice: Explorations in Color and Energy"
Saturday
September 8
7 to 10 p.m.

Miami artist Keith Smith is known for pouring, throwing and scraping the paint onto the canvas rather than traditionally applying it with a brush. He allows gravity, movement of the canvas, and the natural fluid properties of the paint to be his tool. On the rare occasion that he does use a brush, it barely touches the surface of the canvas. This is his technique. As for his style, Smith considers himself a colorist; an artist or designer who uses color in a special or skillful way. Color evokes a feeling or emotion within people. The exhibition will include paintings from Keith's recent series in which he is intently focusing on color and emotion felt through paint via the mixing of colors and varying texture and patterns. Exhibition on view at Lèche Vitrines Art Alliance through October 6.

Bianchi studied at the University of Buenos Aires and now shows with the Luis Adelantado Gallery in Miami and Spain. Also see Frankie Martin in the Project Room and a new mural by Bhakti Baxter. The exhibition is on view Tuesdays through Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. until October 27.

Opening Reception New Art: South Florida
Saturday
September 8
7 to 9 p.m.

On Saturday's Art and Design Gallery Night MOCA at Goldman Warehouse will feature an exhibition of works by the 14 recipients of the 2007 South Florida Cultural Consortium Fellowships for Visual and Media Artists. The Consortium, an alliance of the arts councils of Palm Beach, Broward, Miami-Dade, Monroe and Martin Counties, awards fellowships at the $15,000 and $7,500 level. Several of the works on view are inspired by nature and South Florida's sub-tropical landscape, among them, Alexander Heria's poetic photographs of foliage, Katie Deits' examination of abstracted textures, and Teresa Diehl's large-scale installation that explores spiritual experiences and their relationships to natural environments. Leo Gullick takes colorful and highly composed photographs of his surroundings in Key West. Aerial views of wetlands comprise the subject matter of Walter Hnatysh's photographs, and the collaborative team, Scherer & Ouporov, investigate relationships between nature and language in their video work. Admission by donation.

Last Day to View "Miami Bungalows"
Sunday
September 9

It's your last opportunity to see "Miami Bungalows," an exhibition curated by Jose Vazquez, Miami Dade College professor of architecture, at the Historical Museum of Southern Florida. The exhibit features drawings, photographs and models of this distinctive house style, which gained popularity with America's middle class during the early 20th century. Bungalows were particularly suitable for South Florida's subtropical climate because of their ample porches, wide eaves, use of local building materials and natural ventilation. Despite their practicality, bungalows are rapidly disappearing from the Miami landscape to make room for new developments. See the exhibition this week Mon-Sat from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sun noon to 5 p.m. Admission is $5 for non-members and free for HMSF members.
