December 7 at 7 p.m.

South Florida historian and "Everglades Evangelist" Cesar Becerra will commemorate the anniversary of the Everglades National Park with a talk and the opening of an exhibition of memorabilia that has been donated to FIU. Sixty years ago on December 7, 1947, President Harry Truman stood on a palm-thatched podium and dedicated 300 million acres as Everglades National Park, paying tribute to "... vast distances, intricate and lonely waterways." The newly dedicated park was celebrated by a 3-cent stamp release by the postmaster of Florida City. Pictured: 1957 Everglades National Park Rangers naturalists Nancy Larson and Nancy VanMeter.

Opening Reception for Cosmos: Un Petite Retrospective
Saturday
December 8 from 9 a.m. to noon

Viewing the exhibition opening at the Bakehouse Art Complex, you'll see that Edouard Duval-Carrie has a passionate love affair with his native country Haiti, even though he is somewhat critical. Haiti is a pan-African state. The slaves came with sets of beliefs that combined into a religion loosely called voodoo, the soul of Haiti. Voodoo is as valid for the majority of Haitians today as it was 200 years ago. It's gone underground - a religion on the margin. Duval-Carrie's work forces the viewer to consider this fact of life in Haiti and also asks why Haiti has been forgotten by the great powers of the world. Curated by Jose Perez and Alicia Scalera; courtesy of Bernice Steinbaum Gallery. The exhibition is on view through January 4, 2008.

The Enigma Variations
Saturday & Sunday
December 8 & 9

If a picture is worth a thousand words, music's value is immeasurable. Elgar immortalized his friends - and entertained his wife - with this beloved set of variations, each based on one of their closest acquaintances. Brahms hid his love for his mentor's wife in the melodies of the majestic Piano Concerto No 1. Brahmsian in style, Webern's haunting Passacaglia is the Expressionist master's take on an age-old form. Mark Wigglesworth welcomes fellow Brit Stephen Hough (pictured) in a program that shows us the power of music. Tickets for this New World Symphony Concert are $33 to $78 on Saturday at 8 p.m. and $27 to $63 for Sunday's performance at 3 p.m.
