JOB DESCRIPTION





Position Title: Director, Market Development



Reports to: David Newman, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications



A. PURPOSE OF POSITION:



The Director, Market Development is responsible for enhancing and building the image of the club in the multicultural market as well as the elevation of the profile of the Mets and their players beyond the sports pages – off-field, non-sports business, entertainment, and community and lifestyle media coverage – to help support ticket sales and corporate sales efforts. This includes working collaboratively with marketing, community relations and media relations groups in the strategic development, coordination, and implementation of promotion, publicity, web/publishing content, and translation initiatives.



B. MAJOR DUTIES:



Multicultural Market Development

· Develop and execute short- and long-term, off-field publicity and promotion strategies and programs targeting the Hispanic, African-American, and Asian-American markets that drive interest in the Mets and ticket sales and potential business partnerships.

· Develop and oversee bilingual programming as coordinated initiative for key communications vehicles (Mets.com, losmets.com, press releases, various publishing initiatives, appropriate in-stadium executions, etc.).

· Increase contact with multicultural market to open doors to new editorial, media/promotion and sponsorship partners.

· Coordinate with community relations to key new pro-social programs targeting multicultural markets, elevating Mets’ position in market as community and socially conscious organization.

· Maximize exposure for new partnership with the Jackie Robinson Foundation.



Media Market Development

· Develop and execute short- and long-term off-field publicity and promotion strategies and programs that target the business, pop culture/lifestyle, community-oriented media outlets.

· Work with media relations team, develop relationships/data base with appropriate writers, editors, assignment personnel at appropriate print, radio, television, online media outlets nationally and in New York metro area to drive presence and increase editorial share for club in entertainment, metro, lifestyle, business outlets.

· Develop timely and appropriate key messaging points, Q&As on all topics, including development of press releases (kits).

· Provide nightly topline updates of major press coverage, anticipated news items / issues / content / editorial coverage in the following morning’s newspapers.

C. KEY PERFORMANCE INDICATORS:



· Increase media coverage with positive messaging off the sports pages and in non traditional media outlets.

· New non traditional media relationships with key industry/trade media resulting in increased positive press.

· Overall quality of work and development of new initiatives/platforms, including ongoing daily, relevant, vibrant content on Mets.com

· Ability to generate positive publicity for the team’s community initiatives, to help drive ticket programs, and corporate partnerships.

· Potential media training with Spanish speaking players



D. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:



· Dotted line oversight of Media Relations Assistant

· One fulltime intern (year round to be identified and secure by Director, Market Development)



E. INTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS:



· Great deal of interaction with Senior Mets Staff/SVP’s/VP’s and, on select matters, Ownership and EVP

· Reports directly to Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications with dotted line to Vice President, Media Relations

· Extensive collaboration with media relations team and community outreach group for off-the-field publicity



F. EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS/ACCOUNTABILITY:



· Works closely with media throughout year.

· Potential extensive player interaction

· Develop and foster relationships with officials from the State, City and Borough as well as community leaders to keep them informed on the development of Citi Field and all city-wide initiatives.



G. TRAVEL DEMANDS - YOU MAY BE ASKED TO ATTEND THE FOLLOWING:



· Occasional trips may be required (potential Spring Training, Dominican Academy)

· All travel must be approved by the Senior Vice President, Marketing & Communications, prior to departure.

H. QUALIFICATIONS/OTHER:



· Position requires a minimum of 10 years of marketing and publicity experience preferably with a leading sports, media, and/or entertainment entity or agency.

· Successful track record in both traditional and non-traditional approaches to developing and executing impactful new strategies.

· Proven ability to develop and execute strategies that positively impact multicultural/mass markets.

· Broad-based experience/understanding of integrated marketing (advertising, promotion, publicity, online, publishing)

· Extensive knowledge of New York media marketplace.

· Ability to think strategically about the brand across multiple platforms, including online, television, wireless mobile and pod-casting.

· Strong interpersonal skills, ability to effectively and flexibly collaborate at all levels in organization

· Persuasive written and verbal skills and strong presentation skills

· Bilingual fluency/proficiency (verbal and written Spanish communication).

· Action-oriented individual who is able to prioritize, plan, make decisions and overcommunicate in a lean organization

· Bachelor’s degree required, MBA a plus.
