Exhibition Preview and Lecture

Pamela Koob, Curator of the Permanent Collection of The Art Students League of New York, will speak at the Storer Auditorium, UM School of Business (just a short walk from the Lowe) at 7 p.m. (free and open to the public). Back to the Lowe Art Museum for a preview of the exhibition and reception from 8 to 10 p.m. featuring music by dei7, light fare and cocktails courtesy of Bacardi. The exhibitions are "Art Students League of New York: Highlights from the Permanent Collection" - 75 works that reflect the art movements of the last 125 years - and "Afro-Cuba Works on Paper, 1968-2003," featuring 26 artists from Havana and Santiago de Cuba that represent a cross-section of Cuban society. Admission to the reception is free for Lowe members; $10 for non-members; $5 for students. George Balanchine's "The Nutcracker"

Sugar Plum Fairies and Candy Canes dance on a holiday stage beneath a beautifully decorated Christmas tree that grows from 12 to 30 feet right before your eyes. Miami City Ballet's spectacular production of George Balanchine's The Nutcracker, a holiday classic, features a cast of more than 100 dancers, glorious sets and costumes, magical special effects, and Tchaikovsky's beautiful music. Performances are Fri at 7:30 p.m. and Sat and Sun at 2 and 7:30 p.m., and tickets range from $19.75 to $63. Tickets are also available through Ticketmaster. MCB performs The Nutcracker at Broward Center December 21 - 23.

Behind the Curtain Workshop

PlayGround Theatre presents an interactive introduction to the inner-workings of theatre production. Learn about sets, lights, costumes, choreography, music, rehearsals - all the elements that make up a show. This workshop features "The Steadfast Tin Soldier," Hans Christian Andersen's original toy story. The workshop is limited to 30 persons. Snacks are served, and enrollment includes 2 tickets for the performance of your choice. The cost of the workshop is $70 p/p. The Steadfast Tin Soldier will be performed through December 23. Tickets for the show are $15.

Wrapping Paper Workshop

Here's a timely workshop for adults and children alike. ArtCenter/South Florida is hosting this holiday-themed workshop in the Print Lab (Studio 103) where you'll learn how to use fun techniques to make your own holiday wrapping paper. Methods for printing, stamping, cutting and pasting wrapping paper and gift tags will be demonstrated. All supplies are included, and holiday refreshments will be served. Workshop cost is $15 for members and $25 for non-members. Children are welcome; the first child is free and each additional child is $5.

The Fantastic Symphony

New World Symphony, America's Orchestral Academy, presents The Fantastic Symphony. From Bizet's sultry temptations to Berlioz's lovelorn dreams, this French program brings a healthy serving of passion to your holiday season. "Carmen's" famous melodies will seduce you with their Spanish charm. Michael Tilson Thomas leads the celebrated sister piano duo Katia and Marielle Labèque in Poulenc's saucy, bluesy and sometimes racy romp through 1930s Paris. Berlioz's "Symphonie Fantastique" tells the story of the composer's unrequited love, one that devolves into a delightfully wicked celebration. Performed in the Knight Concert Hall, ticket costs are: $150, $99, $75, $50, $35.

Pablo Cano's "Viva Vaudeville"

Featuring a delightful cast of Cano's life-size marionettes and rod puppets composed of found objects, "Viva Vaudeville" is inspired by popular theater performers of the early 1900s. The set recalls a sumptuous theater resplendent with a gold-fringed, red velvet curtain, and a glittering backdrop. The score mixes a selection from the artists' collection of recordings of popular songs of the 1920s and two original compositions performed by a live band. But best of all are the colorful performers: Busty Galore, Lady Mandolin, Lucifer Red Diablo, Kiki She Devil and others. Performances are 1 and 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are $10 for MOCA members, North Miami residents and employees; $15 for non-members; $3 for children under 12. Seating is limited so advance reservations and payment are required.

Arts Ballet Theatre "The Nutcracker"

Arts Ballet Theatre, under the Artistic Direction of renowned Russian Ballet Master Vladimir Issaev, presents "The Nutcracker," a family holiday tradition. Principal dancer Yoshie Oshima, as the Sugarplum Fairy, and Andrey Konkin, as her Cavalier, are joined by soloists Sabrina Lord Linde, Alina Hernandez, Brian Ruiz , Gorky Flores, Mark Kudelya, Valerie Ackerman, Lara Garcia, Anna Ochoa, and Manuelita Navarro. Children and adults alike will be enchanted by this young company's dancing to Tchaikovsky's magical score. Performances are Saturday at 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m., and tickets range from $12.50 to $35.

Screening of "Tony Rome"

Miami Modern and Frank Sinatra were the embodiment of cool in the 60's when Sinatra and his Rat-Pack entourage filled the house at major hotels and clubs on Miami Beach. In "Tony Rome," Sinatra plays the wise-cracking, gambling Miami ex-con turned private eye as the film shows the seedy side of Miami along with the glitz. Jill St. John costars. Brazilian Voices' Winter Concert

Tradition is a token of the holiday season, and Brazilian Voices is keeping theirs by staging another warm and colorful concert. They will perform several songs from their Holiday CD that mixes Bossa Nova and samba notes with traditional holiday tunes. Joining the group for the very first time, the official "Brazilian Voices Kids" will perform seasonal favorites. This new addition to the already multi-talented and culturally rich ensemble is another example of a group's determination that through music and cultural exchange every day is a reason for celebration. Embrace the spirit of the season by bringing a contribution of clothes and shoes for kids ages 5 through 13 which will be distributed at an orphanage in Rio de Janeiro. Tickets are $20.

Zukerman Chamber Players

Three-time Grammy-winning violinist, conductor, and music director Pinchas Zukerman has teamed up with four protégés from Canada's National Arts Centre Orchestra - including his wife, cellist Amanda Forsyth - to form this acclaimed ensemble featuring a formidable mixture of youth and experience. The Zukerman Chamber Players are Pinchas Zukerman, Violin; Jessica Linnebach, Violin; Jethro Marks, Viola; Ashan Pillai, Viola; Amanda Forsyth, Cello; Joel Quarrington, Double Bass; Kimball Sykes, Clarinet; Christopher Millard, Basson; Lawrence Vine, Horn. Moz / Zakharov Art Exhibition

Finding inspiration from the art of Andy Warhol, images from old movies, 1960's icons and pin-up models, the French artist MOZ paints flawlessly beautiful people. Using wit and humor, his figures are juxtaposed with typography from instructional booklets and warning messages. Alexandre G. Zakharov's work is guided by an innate passion to create paintings and sculptures in an engaging almost primitive style.
