NOTE: THIS WORK CONTAINS SEXUALLY EXPLICIT IMAGERY

This piece celebrates humanity, our balances and imbalances, ourvisceral and spiritual weaknesses, strengths and desires. It is notmy intent to glorify nor to judge the visual material presentedherein, nor to make a statement about whether the proliferation ofpornography in our society is morally right or wrong. My inquiry isinto the very nature of desire and its triggers, and especially intothe emotional and psychological patterns that we see repeatedly in allforms of intimate human relationships.

The found footage in this piece is culled from different sources, mainly archives and private collections, with an occasionalsmut-dealer or ebay vendor thrown in. The original footage (a totalof some 20,000 feet) is in 16mm format produced between the late1920'sand late 1970s. During the 18 months that I spent hand-coloring everyframe of the 500+ feet of film that make up the three videos includedin the installation, I contemplated the psyche of both theproviders/performers and consumers of this type of imagery. I imaginedthe role of the camera operators, and the vision of the directors. Idiscovered the different genres of vintage porn that exist, andencountered, in my cybernetic research, the collectors and archivistsof this historical material, as well as those who simply sell it forprofit. Then I focused on the spaces between all of them and thesubliminal layers of communication there.

My quest in creating this work - and thus participating as bothpurveyor and consumer of this product - was to elevate the banal to"high art" and even to use it as a sociopolitical metaphor, while atthe same time recycling hundreds of feet of celluloid that wouldotherwise be cluttering up attics and landfills or quietly buried inarchives. It is my hope that those who experience this piece will comeaway with new questions regarding the pursuit and true fulfilment of our basic needs for sex, love, intimacy, trust and safety.

enjoy today...
