Domo Japones Opens
Clink, clink, clink. Ladies and gentlemen, a moment of thanks — or, in Japanese, domo. Our Far East — and totally far-out — friends have enriched our lives in so many ways: hybrid cars, green tea, karaoke…
Today we dedicate this corner of the Design District to Domo Japones, a modern, Japanese-inspired bistro that opened on Tuesday. The Karine Rousseau interior — leather booths, contemporary lines, and soft lighting — is, dare we say, a visual haiku.
What else to expect from the team behind the Townhouse, Bond St., and Miss Yip Chinese Cafe?
Sushi chef Naohiro “Nao” Higuchi (Nobu at the Atlantis, Paradise Island) and chef de cuisine Timon Balloo (Azul, La Broche, Chef Allen’s) deliver not only excellent sashimi and sushi, but also surf and turf miso, Kobe beef a la plancha, and sweet soy/mirin-glazed short ribs.
To those who gave us Tokyo, sumo, and kimono, we offer a heartfelt domo.
Domo Japones, 4000 Northeast 2nd Avenue (305-573-5474).

If you are looking for a place that is high on attitude and prices, this is it! Starting from being ignored by a big black transvestite-looking woman with a heroine addict looking sidekick blocking the entrance, we wound up with excellent sushi; miniature portions and insanely high prices. I just don't get it! This is Miami, is everyone in town a financial jackass? Everything was priced stupidly high. Design district or not, who the hell wants to go off like a lamb to slaughter when you want some good food with a little atmosphere. There is sushi on every corner here. Who do these folks think they are? Even on the quality of fish alone: Though excellent, it wasn't worth an unexaggerated 400% increase over a "regular" Miami sushi joint... particularly for the teeny pieces. Sorry. I won't be going back, even if an enemy picks up the tab. 'Cause "I wouldn't wish this [place] on my worst enemy." I can people watch for free."
If you are looking for a place with a VERY friendly staff, excellent food, outstanding selection for Sake, and a non-pretentious typical Miami restaurant, this is the place!
Unlike other places, where customers don't enjoy themselves, but to the expense of others, you will have a great experience at this place. Those who prefer to people watch should instead of appreciating something new, should stay in Lincoln Rd.
This place brings the pleasure to those who enjoy not only excellent food, but also a great atmosphere that will guarantee a good experience.
I highly recommend this place for those who enjoy great food, and have a good spirit for trying something out of the "ordinary from a typical SOBE style".
