Chamber Music From Across the Pond
Sunday
December 2
England experienced something of a musical renaissance in the early 20th century. This program offers three of its finest exponents. Touched by the melancholy of war and the gradual fall of an empire, the music of Britten, Elgar and Vaughn Williams evokes fallen beauty and new revelations. Britten's String Quartet No. 1 reflects the influence of madrigals he sang in his youth, and Vaughan Williams' (On Wenlock Edge) settings of A.E. Housman poems suspend time. From dreamy to jaunty, Elgar's Piano Quintet conjures the natural beauty of the British countryside. New World Symphony welcomes Canadian-American tenor Philippe Castagner (pictured). Tickets are $11.
