World Premiere of NIGHTSPOT
Friday – Sunday
March 28 – 30
NIGHTSPOT, Miami City Ballet's first major commission, involves two of the most celebrated artists of our time. Twyla Tharp has created some of the most memorable and innovative dances in the modern repertory and has also worked extensively on Broadway and in Hollywood. This commission is Tharp's first major work for a ballet company in 5 years. For it, she has joined forces with Elvis Costello who is providing an original musical composition. Costello's musical curiosity is expansive: besides rock and roll, it ranges from classical to jazz to country. Tharp created NIGHTSPOT on 18 MCB dancers, and Costello's composition, which features new music intertwined with various motifs and quotations from existing songs, is written for a 9-piece onstage dance band and a 32-piece orchestra in the pit. Isaac Mizrahi, one of the world's most famous fashion designers, created the costumes for the new work. Also on Program IV are three outstanding ballets by George Balanchine: Square Dance, a classical ballet set to baroque music by Vivaldi and Corelli; Balanchine's homage to Italian folk dancing with the dynamic and speedy Tarantella, set to music by Gottschalk; and the French-style Sonatine, set to music by Ravel. A pre-performance talk by Edward Villella and/or his artistic staff will be conducted, free to the ticketed audience 45 minutes prior to curtain. Performances are 7:30 p.m. on Friday (program does not include Sonatine to accommodate festivities related to the premiere); 8 p.m. on Saturday; 2 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets range from $125 to $19 and are available through MCB Box Office, the Arsht Center Box Office and Ticketmaster. Pictured: Callie Manning and Carlos Guerra; photo by Bruce Weber.

Steve Martin's "The Underpants"

It's been making audiences around the country laugh ever since, and you will too at FIU Theatre's production, directed by Stephen Neal. Performances are Thurs - Sat at 8 p.m. and Sun at 2 p.m. Tickets are $10 and $8 for seniors and FIU students and alumni. Pictured: Paul Perez, Cairo Cangas and Josh Dobarganes.

Join Me for the Celebrity 5K This Sunday, March 30th
Friends & Colleagues,
There is an extremely important (and fun!) event occurring this Sunday morning (March 30th). Thousands of runners and walkers will sweat and strut their stuff for 3.1 miles, all in support of eradicating homelessness in Miami Dade.
The Blue Cross Blue Shield Celebrity 5k (http://www.celebrity5k.com/) for Community Partnership for the Homeless (http://www.cphi.org/) kicks off at 8am on Watson Island (Miami Children's Museum off of the MacArthur Causeway) and finishes in Miami Beach with an after party following at Nikki Beach.
Community Partnership for the Homeless is an organization crucial to our community and is now viewed as the national model in its category. Please join me and the other members of the Next Generation Council on Sunday morning to celebrate CPH's success to date, to contribute to continuing its fight and to get your Sunday off to a healthy and beautiful start.

As first seen at PLANET HOLLYWOOD Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, this visually
dynamic documentary has captured the imagination of thousands of dance music
enthusiasts. It is an adaptation of the book House Music: The Real Story, written
by the amn who created the world’s first House record (ON & ON, 1984), Jesse
Saunders. It delves into and beyond the rave culture and where it’s left those who
were rudely put out by the passing of the Rave Act by Congress. It’s a trippy,
stimulating, visual experience (similar to attending a RAVE), mixed with DJ style
that will have you dancing in your seat.
The film will be followed by Q&A WITH JESSE SAUNDERS at MBC,

“Cinema and Beyond: Peter GREENAWAY”
8 ½ Women (2000)
With John Standing, Mathew Delamere
'If every man is supposed to think of sex once every nine minutes,
what on earth does he think of in the other eight?'
In Greenaway’s homage to
Federico Fellini, John Standing plays Philip Emmenthal, a banker who has just gained
control of some pachinko parlours in Tokyo. His odd son Storey is looking after them
in Japan, while Philip resides in his mansion in Geneva. When Philip's wife dies, he
tells Storey to return to Geneva to console him. While there, Storey takes Philip to see
Fellini's 8 1/2, and it gives them both an inspiration to use their mansion as a bordello.
They go back to Japan and bring an assortment of women back to the mansion.
Just like Guido would have.
Official Selection: Cannes Film Festival
"Peter Greenaway's masterful meditation on grief, sexual indulgence and power
might just be his masterpiece... If 8 1/2 Women isn't the best film of Greenaway's
career, it ranks with anything this obsessive and utterly distinctive filmmaker
has ever done." --Andrew O’Hehir, Salon.com

Friends of Kopali Communities - Costa Rica!
Greetings Friends!
I am proud once again to present to you, Kopali Communities in Costa Rica! It has been a few months since my last correspondence and update to you all. I hope this note finds you happy, healthy and enjoying the new year wherever you may be! 2008 holds great promise for us all! We've got a lot of very exciting information to pass on to you in this update. As always, should you wish to be removed from this mailing list, do not hesitate to let me know. If you would like me to add anyone that you know, please let me know.
"You never change things by fighting the existing reality. To change something, you must build a new model that makes the existing model obsolete." ~ Buckminster Fuller
Valle de Machuca
Do you know where your food comes from? In a Kopali Community you can live right where your food is grown and raised. You can have 100s of varieties of organic fruits, nuts, vegetables, roots, teas, herbs and medicinals as well as organic, farm-raised chicken, eggs, freshwater fish, freshwater shrimp and clams, goats milk, cheese, yogurt, etc, etc, etc. Just imagine, we have over 60 varieties of bananas! Not to mention over 3,000 pineapples planted, 100s of pumping mango trees, dozens of avocado trees, cashew trees, orange trees, lime trees and a myriad of exotic fruit trees like guanabana, custard apple, sugar apple, durian, breadnut, breadfruit, passion fruit, mangosteen and many, many more! In this tropical climate, almost everything will grow! We can grow food year round, as we're not subject to major seasonal changes. Each home-site (lot) will be flowering with a bounty of consumable and ornamental plants and trees. At the heart of the community exists an organic nursery and garden (photos attached) which is just about nearing completion. Here is where much of the food our residents will eat is born and will be managed by a staff of farmers and gardeners.
Is the water you drink clean and chemical-free or is it treated with chlorine and other poisonous chemicals so it is deemed as "safe" to drink? At Valle de Machuca your drinking water will be from natural springs found deep under the surface (200 ft). Completely safe and free of bacteria, your water will never treated with chemicals. Only pure, sweet spring water. Water is becoming more and more of an issue world-wide. Clean water is a problem in almost every country as groundwater supplies and aquifers are continuously being drained by the ever-increasing global population - especially here in Costa Rica!! Additionally, global water supplies are being destroyed by irresponsible corporations and governments who refuse to stop polluting. Each home will also be equipped with a rain-water catchment and storage system.
Speaking of water, the wastewater from each home's toilets, sinks and showers, will be piped to an on-site wastewater treatment plant, engineered, designed and built by the world-renown Dr. John Todd. The effluent water will be treated by a Living-Machine, a completely biological and ecological system which uses minimal amounts electrical (solar) power. This treatment plant, unlike the conventional and unsightly industrial treatment facilities, will be beautiful and lush - bustling with life - with butterflies and birds, flowers and trees. A truly safe, responsible, ecological and sustainable way to treat and dispose of human waste.
Do you know your neighbors or do you only see them in passing from time to time? If you wish to live in a safe, secure and friendly environment where you can be part of a genuine 'community' setting, perhaps Valle de Machuca is the place for you? Common areas like the nursery and gardens, the yoga/community center, children's playgrounds and communal lands will be host to several events, concerts, workshops, courses, gatherings, etc. In fact, our first Permaculture Course was just recently held on-site at Valle de Machuca. The students were given first-hand experience on a sustainable, super-ecological permaculture community development site! It was a smashing success. Inquire if you're interested in attending the next course.
Residents of Valle de Machuca will be integrated with the local population and not segregated from them. We wish to honor, respect and partake in the local community's customs, traditions and events. We wish to truly integrate into THEIR culture, not to force upon them with OURS. Kopali Communities has recently formed the 'Comision Vision San Mateo,' a commission designed to connect us and to bond our community together with the local community, to stimulate learning and education and to exchange of knowledge and wisdom. Additionally, this commission's aim is to stimulate economic growth and prosperity in a town so desperately in need. This is a major commitment on behalf of our organization, the future residents of our community and the people of San Mateo.
A Postcard from the Past
A Kopali community is a special community. Anything but a simple 'collection of houses' or a place where people can pretend that they're living on a Mexican hacienda (i.e. most 'gringo' developments throughout Costa Rica!), Valle de Machuca is an authentic look into the history, tradition and culture of this magical country. Our community is located on a 45 acre (18.22ha) farm, formerly a mango and tropical fruit plantation. Unlike most developers who buy farms (fincas) here in Costa Rica only to clear-cut the trees, grade the land flat and build conventionally master-planned, gated developments, Kopali Communities endeavors to maintain the agricultural history of Costa Rica while doing as little earth-movement and tree removal as possible - working with the natural contours and protecting the natural environment. In fact, we have already begun our efforts in reconnecting ancient biological and wildlife corridors which ran through this area many years ago. Valle de Machuca will continue to be a farm, celebrating the past while moving into the future. It will be home to modern and contemporary people, living healthy and sustainable lifestyles.
"Doing more with less" is a basic principle by which we live and work. An example of this concept are the roads at Valle de Machuca. As part of our storm-water management system we have built a connected series of ponds, pools and creek beds to control the water from the heavy rains (which cause erosion damage and which foul the rivers and streams) and another series of ponds and pools to raise consumable freshwater fish, shrimp and clams (aqua-culture). From these ponds and pools we've built, we've excavated a tremendous amount of local rock material with which we will build our roads. Talk about using local materials!! This is just one of the many examples of doing more with less - and keeping it local.
What's Next with Kopali?
It is our hope that by June 2008, we will be ready to begin selling lots in our community. Interest is peaking and is coming in from all over the world. We were recently featured in an article by Costa Rica's largest English-speaking news paper, the Tico Times. We also had an extensive interview published in the Atenas Today, an English-speaking online publication in Atenas (home to many ex-pats from the US, Canada, France, Germany, etc.). We're working with our amazing Costa Rican architect, Rolf Ruge, on the first set of preliminary drawings for our model home. We expect the home to be completed by the end of 2008. Sr. Ruge is a devout naturalist and an expert in organic architecture. If you are interested in purchasing a lot, please feel free to inquire.
The construction of the new edition of www.kopalicommunities.com is now underway. Our good friend and amazing web-designer, Andres Calvo, is hard at work getting it ready for re-launch. On our new site, you'll find interactive elements like an online community forum, discussion and bulletin boards, weekly photo updates from the finca, videos, comments from our visitors, etc. I hope that you all register and check back often!
We're planning the first of many gatherings (an encuentro) at Valle de Machuca now (see below). Please do come if you're able. If you have not already, this will be a wonderful time to really see it for yourself, to feel the energy of this land and the incredible valley in which we've chosen to locate and to have a whole lot of fun! As always, please continue to email me with your questions, comments, thoughts, well-wishes, etc. We love hearing from you all and really look forward to being together soon.
Until next time,
Jeff & the entire Kopali Team!

A Note From Michael Moore
Monday, March 24th, 2008
Friends,
It would have to happen on Easter Sunday, wouldn't it, that the 4,000th American soldier would die in Iraq. Play me that crazy preacher again, will you, about how maybe God, in all his infinite wisdom, may not exactly be blessing America these days. Is anyone surprised?
4,000 dead. Unofficial estimates are that there may be up to 100,000 wounded, injured, or mentally ruined by this war. And there could be up to a million Iraqi dead. We will pay the consequences of this for a long, long time. God will keep blessing America.
And where is Darth Vader in all this? A reporter from ABC News this week told Dick Cheney, in regards to Iraq, "two-thirds of Americans say it's not worth fighting." Cheney cut her off with a one word answer: "So?"
"So?" As in, "So what?" As in, "F*** you. I could care less."
I would like every American to see Cheney flip the virtual bird at the them, the American people. Click here and pass it around. Then ask yourself why we haven't risen up and thrown him and his puppet out of the White House.
The Democrats have had the power to literally pull the plug on this war for the past 15 months -- and they have refused to do so. What are we to do about that? Continue to sink into our despair? Or get creative? Real creative. I know there are many of you reading this who have the chutzpah and ingenuity to confront your local congressperson. Will you? For me?
Cheney spent Wednesday, the 5th anniversary of the war, not mourning the dead he killed, but fishing off the Sultan of Oman's royal yacht. So? Ask your favorite Republican what they think of that.
The Founding Fathers would never have uttered the presumptuous words, "God Bless America." That, to them, sounded like a command instead of a request, and one doesn't command God, even if they are America. In fact, they were worried God would punish America. During the Revolutionary War, George Washington feared that God would react unfavorably against his soldiers for the way they were behaving. John Adams wondered if God might punish America and cause it to lose the war, just to prove His point that America was not worthy. They and the others believed it would be arrogant on their part to assume that God would single out America for a blessing. What a long road we have traveled since then.
I see that Frontline on PBS this week has a documentary called "Bush's War." That's what I've been calling it for a long time. It's not the "Iraq War." Iraq did nothing. Iraq didn't plan 9/11. It didn't have weapons of mass destruction. It DID have movie theaters and bars and women wearing what they wanted and a significant Christian population and one of the few Arab capitals with an open synagogue.
But that's all gone now. Show a movie and you'll be shot in the head. Over a hundred women have been randomly executed for not wearing a scarf. I'm happy, as a blessed American, that I had a hand in all this. I just paid my taxes, so that means I helped to pay for this freedom we've brought to Baghdad. So? Will God bless me?
God bless all of you in this Easter Week as we begin the 6th year of Bush's War.
God help America. Please.

The Disney Topiaries
Now through April 10
Take a scenic stroll through the Disney Topiary gardens at Aventura Mall and marvel at the thousands of trees, plants and flowers that have transformed the Center and Fountain Courts into a piece of Disney magic. The display, part of the mall's Disney's Epcot International Flower & Garden Festival promotion, is a first for this kind of exhibit in a South Florida shopping center. Like the dazzling Disney Topiaries in Epcot, the mall's topiaries incorporate stunning blooms, artfully designed floral beds and expertly crafted bonsai trees. See five different gardens that make up the Lion King display, featuring the characters Simba, Nala, Pumbaa, Timon, and Rafiki in fun colorful scenes reminiscent of the movie. Another garden scene displays Bambi characters Thumper, Flower and of course, Bambi, all enjoying each other's company in a lush forest setting. Walk among the incredible topiaries, including a 13 foot-tall giraffe, and you might glimpse one of the "hidden Mickeys" that have been incorporated. Aventura Mall, South Florida's largest super regional mall, is open Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 8 p.m.

Electric violinist Tracy Silverman joins the composer for a work inspired by Jack Kerouac's journeys through California, and the rhythmic drive of Slonimsky's Earbox puts us in touch with Adams' Minimalist roots. March 27 from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m.

Jef Stott, a founding member of Lumin and Stellamara, will perform a moody Middle Eastern piece with dub elements that was specifically designed for this event. He is a trained anthropologist and studied with master musicians from Morocco, Algeria, Egypt, Iran and Turkey, and their music and instruments figure in his compositions and production work. Accompanying is Zeb on oud and light percussion. Bob Duskis and The Worker from Six Degrees Records will DJ before and after the sets. Part of the Rhythm Foundation 20-year Retrospective.
