Opening Reception for "Deez Nites Be All Da Same to Me"
Sunday
March 16 at 12:30 p.m.

Exploring the notions of assimilation, stereotyping and discrimination, Leslie Golumb and Louise Silk tell a Passover story that differs from the traditional tale of the Jewish slaves escaping Pharoah. Their story begins with a real Jewish family, the Mosses of the old South, whose images were captured by a silhouettist in 1844. The scene depicts mother, father, two children, and a slave boy, which presented a lot of questions to the quilters, like: did they celebrate the Passover Seder; did they treat the slave as a member of the family; did they eventually set him free? Creating their own Haggadah of sorts, in quilt form, the artists followed the parallel of the Passover story and sent the slave boy on freedom's path. In this amazing series they created imagery and fabric related to Jewish and African-American traditions and sources, including the quilt patterns used by the Underground Railroad. Exhibit on display at Alper JCC through Tuesday, April 22, and is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 to 4 p.m.
