HOT Projects
Adopt North Shore Park
Put on your gardening gloves and join us at North Shore Park to help restore one of Miami's few remaining native hammocks. Remove exotic plants, mulch, landscape, and help maintain this environmentally precious northern part of Miami Beach and a true Florida legacy. This is a family-friendly project. Minimum age with an adult is 12. (8-15 volunteers) Project # 22

The House That Marjory Built
Volunteers are needed to help care for the lawn at the historic Marjory Stoneman Douglas cottage in Coconut Grove. Ms. Douglas built the cottage in 1926 and she lived there for seventy years. The outside area of the cottage, which is now a designated historic monument and managed by the Land Trust, is in need of some upkeep. Family-Friendly: minimum age with an adult is 7. Project #29

Falls Parade Volunteers needed
Volunteers are needed to help make the Falls Parade a success! Tasks include pacing, passing out coupon books, selling HOM items, and helping out with face painting on November 22nd from 10 AM-5 PM. Community Cinema Independent Lens is in Miami!
Hands On Miami in partnership with Independent Lens, Florida International University's Center for Leadership and Service, Channel 2 your local PBS station and Generation Engage are excited to present the Community Cinema series, showing on Wednesday, December 10, 2008 beginning at 8:00pm at Florida International University's University Park campus in GC 140. Join us for free popcorn and screening of Helvetica.
About the film: You can't escape if you try--it's on your computer, the subway, U.S. mailboxes, IRS tax forms, and spells out countless corporate logos from Target to Crate & Barrel to Fendi. No doubt, Helvetica is the king of fonts. But why? To find the answer, first- time director Gary Hustwit meets with historians and designers whose passion for typefaces run high, and discovers the secrets behind the fonts we use and read every day. Are YOU a Leader?
Take a lead with Hands On Miami and become a Volunteer Leader (VL) for a calendar project or new volunteer orientation! HOM is looking for a few good volunteers who are ready to step up to the plate and support projects as a leader. Starting in September, we will be holding monthly VL trainings. This holiday season, give to those in need!
This holiday season, give to those who are less fortunate and cannot afford the Thanksgiving meal that so many of us enjoy each year. Hands On Miami is holding its annual Thanksgiving food drive that will support the women and children served by the Overtown YWCA and families served by Sant La, a Haitian neighborhood agency. Please bring non-perishable, Thanksgiving related food to one of our two collection sites on November 20 and 21, Keiser University or the Arsht Center for the Performing Arts. UPS pick-up is also available for larger quantity donations. Hands On Miami is also seeking volunteers in the office to help out with this special project. As Hands On Miami continues to go green with Project Green Hands, we have been urged by many of our volunteers & supporters to switch to a PAPERLESS NEWSLETTER FORMAT. Starting NOW, you will need to access our projects online. Just click Volunteer Projects in the Menu, then click either Browse Projects for a list view, or Project Calendar for a calendar view. We will also continue to keep you updated with HOM news and events on our website, at www.handsonmiami.org as well as through the electronic newsletter. Questions, comments or concerns? Get PUMPED! Pumped for Change, a non- profit entity of Pumped, Inc. and is proud to present The One Million Penny Project Launch Party. Volunteers are needed to help set up on Thursday, November 13th from 4 pm to 8 pm and 3 volunteers for Friday, November 14th Launch Party event from 5 to 9 pm. We would like the volunteers on Friday dress business casual (no tie or jacket). The event will take place at 40 NE 1st Ave., 6th Floor. On Sunday, November 16th, 2008, Historic Virginia Key Beach Park will play host to the International Caribbean Music Festival! This festival features some of the hottest music acts from the Caribbean. This year's line up includes Beenie Man, Bounty Killer, Christopher Martin, Etana, and over 16 more acts. We at the park need volunteers to help with the festival. If you volunteer for the event, you will receive free entry and parking and up close encounters with the artists. Please read below for the volunteer hours: Block 1: 11am-3pm, Block 2: 3pm - 7pm, Block 3: 7pm - 11pm, Block 4: 11pm-3am
Volunteers must arrive an half an hour before their shift begins. Volunteers must also be available to meet for one half hour on Saturday for preview.
Please let , Marcia Anderson at 305- 960-4614, know if you and others are able to volunteer any block. Please respond as soon as possible to reserve your block! We are also looking for an additional 4 main volunteers who can work 2 consecutive shifts.

The Human Services Coalition need volunteers for the Prosperity Campaign! Volunteers are needed from mid-January to Mid-April to:
Assist with intake (e.g., helping clients fill out forms)
Prepare taxes if they have time to go through the training
Offer financial literacy/financial planning/banking advice as clients wait for their taxes to be prepared
Assessing what other needs they may have in addition to taxpreparation
Assistance in English, Spanish and/or Creole can always be used, and we have sites from Florida City to Miami Gardens. Hours are generally evenings and Saturdays, with some weekday hours as well.
Although no expertise is needed on the outset, some knowledge is helpful for the tax prep positions. We will also provide full training.

Volunteer and PLAY at the same time! Please join your friends at Hands On Miami for a fun day at Little River Park, to build a KaBOOM! playground for neighborhood children to enjoy!
On Tuesday, December 9th the playground will be constructed with the help of The Home Depot, The NFL, Miami- Dade Parks and Recreation staff, Hands On Miami and YOU!
Project build begins at 8:00am and goes until we finish. The location is 10525 NW 24th Ave. Miami, FL 33147.
